AO3 Is Always Free to Use

In the past few weeks, the Archive of Our Own's Support Committee has been receiving a number of requests for assistance with an app that creates a paywall block after more than one hour of daily reading. We have no control over this (or any) mobile app, and do not approve of any paywalling of AO3 content. This is not the first time users have had problems with unofficial apps. For various reasons, the Archive is not developing a mobile app, so any app you may find available is unofficial and might even pose a security risk to use.

The AO3 site is always free to use through a web browser on any and all devices, including mobile devices. One of our core tenets is protecting fans and fanworks from commercial exploitation, so we don’t have ads or charge anyone to use the AO3, and we don’t approve of other people charging you money for AO3 content.

Because we haven't developed a mobile app ourselves, we are okay with individuals creating unofficial apps, provided that these apps clearly state they are unofficial, refrain from using our logos, and do not charge users for their usage. Forcing people to pay to use those apps is a violation of the AO3 Terms of Service section 1.D.5.

Please let other fans know that we are not connected to any apps they may find, and we are unable to assist them should they have issues with them. Remember AO3 is always available for free on your browser!

  I've heard through the grapevine that the unofficial app that is now demanding payment to be used has features that AO3 itself doesn't have. It even includes a function where users can listen to a fanfic as an audiobook whenever they can't sit down and physically read the fic. Not sure if AO3 has this feature on the website itself, but it seems to have provided users with a lot more than the site does. I wonder if the app's creator took inspiration from the FFN app where you can download fic for offline use (which is handy for long commutes to work) and you can even listen to a fic as an audiobook.
  Still, I tend to shy away from things when they state that they are not connected to something and are an unofficial app. I was interested in downloading the app a few years ago, but then I realised that AO3 is adaptable for phone use on the official website and prefer that since I felt safer.

    I have had my phone read browser pages (like AO3s) as an audiobook to me by using a screenreader. I think most smartphones these days have a text-to-voice function.
    Also, on ao3 in any browser, there is a button at the top of each work that allows you to download it for offline use (eg as epub or pdf).

        My phone doesn't have a screen reader. Is there a way for me to download this epub reader (An app, a file etc...)?
        It would be really helpful as my only way right now is to paste it into google translate and press the "read aloud" button. Embarrassing, I know...

        nothing to be embarrassed about!! you gotta do what you gotta do after all. i recommend going to your phone's app store and search up "epub reader" and find one that you like. usually other formats like pdf, mobi, doc, etc work with these apps as well. if you use android like me, pocketbook has a lot of features and also allows audiobooks. I've heard a lot of good things about moon+ so i'm thinking of trying that next.

      This is super true. I think a lot of people forget or don’t realize that it’s very easy to provide all sorts of “awesome additional stuff” when you’re not the one who had to build the original foundation nor are you responsible for maintaining it. Sort of like adding a garnish to a fancy meal and getting praised for being “better” than the chef lol

    I use AO3 online or downloaded to epub, and use text to speech on either version. It works better on the epub format (as it doesn’t start reading out the names of everyone who’s given kudos) but works well enough either way, and is certainly a lot better than basic text to speech is for a lot of pdfs which have copyright disclaimers on every page (I have some beef with academic publishing here)

    I used WebOutLoud in Apple Store to read the entire story to me. It is free. I subscribe for $12 a year to remove certain pop up’s and because I use it so much and want to give to developer.

      AO3 has bookmark functionality on the website for logged in users, and a history page that logs every fic you’ve read in the past. You can also favourite tags so that they appear on the home page when you log in.

Well that sucks, I've always used it to download it and read offline since I'm often away up to 3 h in a bus and read, however I still am very happy that Ao3 is still for free. Also girlies dw Ik how I can still read offline.

    I know TwT, however I kinda really don't enjoy the pdf ect. I'll manage it someother way. I am happy you took your time to give me advice. I mean in the end if I don't have any other option I'll use it. I ao3 does ever decide to do a simular thing as the app did , ment as the to download as it looked in the app, I'll eat it up!       Pdf's are tough to use on phone but epub is adjustable. Look into ebook apps for your phone. I've been using moon+ reader for years, you can adjust fonts, fonts size, background to look how you like it and keep all fics you downloaded (epub) on the shelfs in the app

        Omg! I just tried it and it is by far my favorite way of doing it!
        I used to just copy the text and create a story on Wattpad, don't worry I never uploaded any of those chapters, I hate thefts, and read it there.

    The site works exactly as good on mobile as on desktop.
    There are dozens of chrome extensions to add missing features to the desktop site.
    Unfortunately, you cannot install extensions on mobile Chrome.

        It's a pretty new feature. Not all extensions are available on mobile (yet?) because I think an extension's creator has to do something, but quite a few are, including many popular ones like uBlock Origin and Read Aloud.

        Not everything's available on the main app, but there is a way to install any extension on firefox beta, at least for android. (Don't have IOS, so can't check for apple people.) There's just the risk that some things might not work properly, since they're not actually designed for mobile.
        That being said, I don't think I've ever actually encountered an extension that didn't work properly on mobile that wasn't also kinda broken on desktop, so your extensions will probably work just fine.

  a lot of things that shouldn't fly in the app store are allowed to fly, it's shocking. ripoff games and blatant scams that actively harm are allowed to stay up for who knows how long, but a nipple and some pubes gets you censored in almost every case!
  said something to the effect of this already, but things like this are a pretty big deterrent to ao3 getting an app. apple and other such companies do NOT like things like this place, with no paywalls/monetization or hardly any set limits for works beyond what users block/mute to not see themselves. switching that around for a bit of convenience would yield some disastrous results

    Yeah, one's left wondering what actually would prompt the play store to finally delete the app from the store. I'm pretty sure a lot of people already reported it, but it's still there (and still asking for money!). And I also find it hilarious that it's actually in the App Store, when... well, it's a AO3 wrapper and full disclosure of what you can find here is noted. The AO3 App Wars left nothing behind to devs to learn, apparently.
    On the other hand, I'm somewhat sympathetic towards the app dev (not much, because he's a fucking arrogant ass towards people who do not speak english and use the app regardless). If he just, like, asked for donations to mantain the app (because everything costs money) I'd be find with it... but he chose to basically paywall the free shit you can read with any browser? Not a very smart move to make.

I was mostly using it so I could zoom in the words without having the scroll from left to right constantly and was able to change the reading the dark mode making it easier on rhe eyes on my phone. Shame they messed up so badly

      body { font-size: large; }
      Put that in the box for custom CSS. You can also pick a specific font size like 14pt instead of large. Replacing "body" with "#workskin" will only change the font size within stories.

      If you use the Site Skin Wizard (the 'Use Wizard' button in the Create Site Skin page) you can just enter a number above 100 in the browser font size section to make text bigger

      It's not an option on individual websites, it's something your browser can do for any website!
      Here's how to get larger text on Chrome for Android, for example. If you're using something else, google "larger text" + your browser name for those instructions.

  Download Brave browser, it had a night mode which can be used on any website it reverse the colors. Works like a charm on this site expect you can't see the scrolling on the screen.

AO3 has honestly one of the best mobile sites out there. There is really no reason to download an app, guys, really. There's also a lot of customisation available via skins even if the default mobile look doesn't do it for you!

    I don't really understand what you're asking about here. There is the History tab if you want to see all the works you've visited, if that's what you mean. If you mean sorting through works you want to read, you can always delete a bookmark after you've read a story and don't plan on returning to it. If it's browsing you're talking about, a link you've already clicked on shows up as a different colour, so that's an easy way to tell.

        Ao3 has its own "history" tab, not the web browser history. Ao3 has its own in-site history section. As far as the titles changing colors not working for u anymore, maybe check ur browser settings, cause if u delete ur browser history (which is separate from ur phone's web cache), then yeah, anything u've read is gonna revert to its original title color like u never even clicked it.

I only use the app because it had a reading feature, a reason, the stories to me.
I have a real hard time with reading a lot of things since I was younger so.....yeah

  I wouldn't use the app. The ao3 browser works just fine on mobile without an app. Besides, it's not an official app and is probably a security risk and getting money off of other people's hard work.

  use microsoft edge browser (on phone or laptop) and use their "read aloud" feature. That's how I "read" the books on here now. It's awesome.

  a audiobook. The app was going really well until the paywall honestly I hope the one that made the app can fix his mistake soon so that people can use it like before without pay after all it was similar to the fanfic.net app in several ways minus the paywall.

  I used the app in question because of my focus issues, I can't filter input easily and have always struggled with reading anything in-browser because of the steadily growing number of menus wrapping everything. It's too much visual "noise" and I can't "hear" the content I'm reading because the menus are "loud" to me, to put it in auditory terms.
  I need my screen to be just words. So I'm planning to try downloading ePubs to my e-reader like many others, but since I primarily horny-search for content on demand, this is going to put a series of barriers in place when I am looking for enjoyment.
  I hope that this perspective helps! I very much condemn what the dev of that app is doing, the whole things is very disappointing.

    Have you tried using some sort of reader mode/reader view on your browsers? They're supposed to completely strip out menus and show you only the bare bones text. (sorry if you've already tried those!)

So unfortunate the dev of that app went the stupidity route.
Oh well, he lives and he learns. If we're lucky, he'll just drop the subscription system entirely and the app could possibly live.
Glad AO3 is being proactive on this, though. Shouldn't even plant the seed of the idea that fanworks can be charged for.

  If he goes "Mea culpa", removes the paywall, refunds all the money he took, and promises to never hold the idiot ball again, maybe they could let him off with a slap on the wrist and let the app go back up.

If you send proof of your account to the dev of the app (using the contact details on the app store) and ask to have your fics and profile removed because you do not consent to monetisation of your work, they do say that they'll remove it
I just sent a screenshot of my logged-in profile, a screenshot of my profile on their app, and said that I want all of my fics removed from it – they replied within a couple of hours
I encourage everyone else who opposes monetisation of fanworks to do the same!

    I asked a couple of days ago, and today before posting this I redownloaded the app to check and yes, my account and fics appear to be gone. I'm not logged in on the app, so it's not a "hiding it just from me" thing
    Maybe they will get readded, who knows, but they'd be in deeper shit than they are already. It's almost certainly easier for them to just pull anything that people want pulled, since the number of actively-posting users who know/care about this stuff is very small compared to the number of people who will never request their content removed.

    They don't remove the fics since the app doesn't actually repost the fics on the app, it is a mirror of ao3. What it does is add coding on the app that makes the user and their fics invisible so that it does not show during browsing on the app. But the fic is still there, so they are technically still making money off of it. It's just invisible.

        Yeah so idk why people are suddenly okay with contacting the app creator to "remove" their usernames and fics from showing on the app, like the developer is still not making money off of their fic.
        The fics and everything all there since they're still on ao3. What's on ao3 its on the app. It's a mirror. It's just invisible. But it's still there

        Yeah if they were legitimately being taken off in that manner, I would have considered contacting the app dev. But if it's as u say it is, it ain't gonna be worth my time and energy, and is why let them have my contact info then, in that case?

        I don't understand what the objection is here? I'm not in favor of this app or monetizing Ao3, but what is the functional difference between making a fic and a username invisible and inaccessible through the app and "true removal." How are they "technically making money" off a fic that nobody can see or read? If people are paying this person to read fics on a mobile app, and a certain fic cannot be read on the mobile app, it seems to me that they are definitionally not making money off that fic regardless of whether or not the HTML for it technically exists in the code.

        If the fic is not visible in the app, then it's not really there. App users can't read it, can't access the author profile... unless they go to the website. Making the app users to come to the website and stop making profit for the dev is the whole deal here. If authors ask for their mirror presence to be invisible in the app, is a win-win. Win because now our fics aren't mirroed in the damned app, win because if enough authors did this, a whole bunch of app users would actually go here, to the website, just to actually read for free.

  EDIT: I just realized there's no easy way to get works posted anonymously taken down! Also that it's a Google Play app, so I don't think I can even download it if I have to?

    I downloaded to see if my works actually were there, but I don't think you need to? I just sent a screenshot of my account here to prove it was mine and listed my username and user ID number
    You might be able to get anon works taken down with a screenshot of them on your logged-in profile as proof of ownership, and maybe the work ID numbers? Worth a try!
