The OTW 2023 Annual Report is Now Available

We are pleased to publish the OTW's 2023 Annual Report, available in PDF or HTML formats. The report provides a letter from our Board of Directors, a summary of our activities during the past year and our financial statements for 2023.

Some highlights from 2023 include a survey for AO3's 16th anniversary, major growth in OTW's social media presence, and Legal Advocacy successfully obtaining a renewal of the vidding exemption for the sixth time in our history!

You can access the 2023 report, and all earlier years, on the Reports and Governing Documents page of the OTW website. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

The Organization for Transformative Works is the non-profit parent organization of multiple projects including Archive of Our Own, Fanlore, Open Doors, Transformative Works and Cultures, and OTW Legal Advocacy. i'm curious why it's published almost a year after 2023 ended - does it take an additional year to gather and format the data, or are there other factors?

  Hello,
  It's a combination of factors. While this year was a little later than most, it always takes some time to gather all the relevant information together and get everything written out. The Annual Report is written by Communications in conjunction and with feedback from every OTW committee, so there are several rounds of internal feedback and edits. Additionally, the report requires having the audited financials of the year completed - something which takes place in May at the earliest.

  FWIW, at my day job I access a lot of annual reports for US government agencies and nonprofits, and they generally are a year or two years behind: for example, the Library of Congress released their FY2023 report last month. So this amount of delay is within what I’d normally expect from an organization of OTW’s size and tax status! :)

Woah!!! Congrats to everyone involved in this process, from the team compiling the numbers to the community contributing to them!!!!
I wonder if there could be a stat on # of works added to the Archive or the # of accounts created under OTW services for the 2024 OTW BTN post next year?

Is this me, or inserting images doesn't work?
Like, i copied my text with image in it into comment, but now it's doesnt display. Only link to this. Checked this with HTML-editor, but again, it doesn't work even if there's no error in tag.
For example, this:

It's displays as img tag in comment editor, but if a explore this with google-editor, it shows as p tag.

I regret that your numbers are inaccurate. Not by your intent - just by the nature of math. If you list "Claims not upheld" you must - by pure reason - include a separate number for 'Claims upheld'. Unless you never uphold or respond to any complaints... in which case there would be no need for the category at all. I honestly believe that knowing the number of valid complaints re: inappropriate/offensive/unlawful content posted would be a valid question re: the public misuse of the site. But that's just me. If you prefer not to share that info - that's your business.

  Hello,
  We reached out to the Policy & Abuse committee (PAC) to get an answer for you.
  They said that the Pie Chart in the Annual Report is intended to outline the types of reports they receive, not whether they were upheld or rejected. They included a note that all Offensive Content reports are rejected to prevent misunderstandings about the AO3 TOS which states that "Unless it violates some other policy, we will not remove Content for offensiveness."
  If you have other questions about this, we recommend you contact PAC directly.
