The AO3 Category Change workgroup comes seeking your opinion again!

After analyzing the past round of feedback, we want to address what we believe was the most contentious point: how to organize the Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art subcategories.

We are now proposing this scheme:

Animated Films
Anime & Manga
English-language Comics and Graphic Novels
English-language Animated Series and Cartoons
Webcomics & Animated Webseries

In our broad categorization system, a top category that holds all animation and comics is logical, especially since we have a Live Action top category as well. However, having a subcategory that holds all comics and animation, regardless of nationality, is against common fannish practice, and having some internal divisions should be helpful for browsing.

The general pattern of the feedback we have received indicates anime and manga fans generally believe there is a strong link between manga and anime and that they should not be separated. But there is not such a strong link between comics and animation, since while adaptations exist, fans usually consider them separate incarnations. While Anime & Manga cannot be separated, Comics and Animation should be. This, alongside common fannish practice, is one of the reasons we have decided to split Anime & Manga off into its own subcategory.

However, without a name that does not clearly state that anime & manga are not included, both the 'Animated Series' and 'Comics & Graphic Novels' subcategories were confusing (for example, one might wonder why anime series weren’t in ‘Animated Series’). English-language Comics, Graphic Novels and Cartoons are the majority of fandoms in this category - aside from Anime & Manga - so we have decided to create those subcategories and to make the language division explicit in the subcategory name.

Comics and animated series that do not fit in the subcategories will be in the top category. Other subcategories – such as Manhwa and Bande Dessinée – might be created in the future, if there are enough fandoms to warrant it.

In this scheme, where do animated series and cartoons that are neither anime nor English-language fall? What happens to animated series from, say, France or Russia or Brasil?

    I'm sorry, that was sloppy reading on my part. And I probably wouldn't notice this at all when using the archive - I'd just use the top category and think nothing of it. But seeing the categories listed like this, my knee-jerk feeling as a person who doesn't live in an English speaking country is that there is a big hole in the category list. Though of course I understand the reasons for that. Categorization is hard.

  First, let me apologize! There was a mixup when posting the News Post and a few paragraphs with vital information were missing. We've now uploaded a fixed version.
  As E above me said, animated series that don't fit any subcategory will go directly under the top category, and you will be able to both filter all fandoms in a category, and all fandoms in a category that aren't in any subcategory, as well as filter for them by country & language.

    Will you be able to filter for country and language of the canon source material itself, or is this just for the language that fics are in? (If it's the former, is this something that's already supported or will it be brand new functionality? Either way, that's pretty cool.)

      While currently one can filter by the language of the work itself, the intention is to introduce the new functionality of being able to filter for country of origin and/or language of the canon source material. We’re glad you like the idea!

I think this new categorization is much more practical than the previous one. The subcategories for English-language comics/cartoons are necessary, in my opinion, since they cover a very large amount of fandoms.

Possibly some of the trouble in deciding on categories is that the other fandom categories are based on medium and this is based on content. (Except for "live-action TV," which has the qualifier specifically to separate it from some of this category.)
While superhero comics/animation fandom does recognize them as separate sources, we do tend to group them together for fic purposes. Especially for fic *search* purposes. The Bruce/Clark communities don't tend to be "only comics" or "only cartoons" unless it's limited to a specific source fandom--only Young Justice, or only JLA, or only Superman/Batman comics.
(In other words: While I can see the point of separating comics from animation, I don't want to have to look for my favorites in two different subcategories. Waah.)
I continue to think that a category for "superheroes," whether comics, animated, or live-action, would be useful. I do not expect to get one (but hey, maybe someday someone will make a script where we can customize our own fandom categories).

  We did consider a subcategory for superhero titles. However, the last round of feedback and the discussion afterwards left us with the strong concern that having to make a superhero/non-superhero judgement for each new and existing fandom would be a difficult task.
  It will always be possible to search for any particular fandom without knowing what subcategory or subcategories it appears in. Thus, for example, you could search for “Batman” to find all fandoms whose names contain the word “Batman”, regardless of categorization.

    I'll cope with comics and animated series being split. I can see that splitting out "superheroes" could be troublesome; while I could see tag wranglers being able to make almost all of the judgment calls easily, the number left might be too much hassle, and the borderline cases would just be wank fodder. And none of the other archives use that as a category, so people wouldn't be expecting it.
    Neither "Gotham Knights" nor "Young Justice" contain the word Batman in the fandom title. And while there are a couple of comics series that have Robin's name in the title, nobody tags those stories by the comic title. Possibly, what I really want is a "Batverse" or "Bat-Family" meta-tag, like the MCU-verse. That becomes a tag-wrangling issue rather than a categorization issue.

      I'll pass on your suggestion for metatag groupings to the DC wrangling team. We don't usually link fandoms by character, however; instead we usually recommend searching by character.
      I should note, as one of the Marvel wranglers, that the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" grouping exists because that's Marvel's catch-term for a single continuous universe that is separate from other movies, such as the Spiderman franchises or the X-Men franchise. I don't know if the various Bat canons have the same continuity.

        Batverse canons have NO continuity. DC has been fascinatingly inconsistent about which comics do and don't connect to which others; there is absolutely no attempt, at the editorial level, to make *any* of the titles connect. Except for crossovers. Immediately after those, we're back to no relation.
        They'll run a crossover event where six series are involved and characters bounce around between them... and then allow details to come up in one or two that would completely break the storylines in others. I think the official policy is "every series stands alone--scratch that; every *author* on every series stands alone, plz to ignore all previous canon, except for the "iconic" stuff which we have decided will always be true, until/unless we decide to ignore that. When we run crossovers, get used to the idea that basically, there are six different universes of the same event happening."
        Also, every 5-12 years, they run a multiverse-shattering event that retcons half the characters' backstories--often, while attempting not to retcon the *other* characters' backstories, leading to ridiculous juxtapositions if anyone bothers to plot them out. This has led to quite a lot of fanon being taken as just as important, or more important, than canon. Fanon, at least, doesn't massively rewrite itself twice in the space of a few months, de-age characters from 3-10 years, and make them all unmarried and unmarriageable.
        It may or may not be reasonable to create a "batverse" meta-category separate from DC Comics/DC Animation. I'd find it useful; I don't know how many other people would, nor how much time would be wasted arguing over what should or shouldn't be included. I'd love to see it; I'd certainly understand if the general tag wrangler reaction, even from those who work on DC fandoms, was "keep that slithering tentacled monstrosity away from me; we're chopping it into individual titles and THAT IS ALL, got it? We will chop off more tentacles as they appear! NO TWO ROBINS ARE THE SAME ROBIN BUT ALL JOKERS ARE THE SAME JOKER. Now shut up and read your pseudo-incestuous batporn."

  Well, sort of. "Music & Bands" currently includes both fic about songs/albums, and about bands & musicians. "Celebrities & Real People" includes TV & movie RPF as well as historical RPF. So those are two big categories that are also based on content, not medium.

So "Animated Films" will include (non animated) comics if they're not English-language or Manga? That's not where I'd think to look. Other than that it all makes sense to me.

  "Top category" means "parent category" which is "Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art", not "first subcategory in this list." "Animated Films" would be one of five subcategories within the "Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art" top/parent category. Non-animated comics that aren't English-language or manga would be in the "Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art" top/parent category and would not be in any of the five sub-categories.

  As E explained above, non animated comics that don't belong to any comics subcategories will go directly under the Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art category, not under the Animated Films subcategory.
  You will be able to find them either by choosing to see all fandoms in the category (which will also include fandoms in subcategories) or by choosing to see all fandoms in the category that have no subcategory. You can also find them by filtering by country of origin and/or language of the canon source material.

Okay, say there aren't enough manwha or bande desinee to get their own category yet. Where do they go in the meanwhile? I know this is hard, but these categories just seem like "English, Japanese and NOTHING ELSE EXISTS". Where does Tintin go? What about Adele Blanc-Sec?

  As we mention in the second to last paragraph, all fandoms that don't fit in any subcategories will go directly under the top category. You will be able to filter for them if you elect to view all fandoms in the category, or just the fandoms that are in the category but none of its subcategories (there will be buttons for both lists). You will also be able to filter for them by country of origin and language of canon source.

I think this is a very difficult category to organise, and I appreciate you putting so much thought into it. I think this is a more practical scheme and I would find it useful. I do rather wish for a Marvel & DC subcat, though I understand why you decided against it.

As the question sin the thread once again show, it's unclear and easily overlooked what's supposed to happen to Non-English and Non-Japanese comics and cartoons.
People only see the categories where those are not included and won't necessarily read down till the explanation in the fourth unconnected paragraph.
It also looks rather exclusionary and unsorted when some things are in subcategories, but other equal things aren't, just as it does on Commons.

  Language and country of origin will be based on the original canon rather than what translations exist. So, the “English-language Comics and Graphic Novels” and “English-language Animated Series and Cartoons” subcategories will only contain fandoms whose original canon is English-language.

  Any fandom not in a subcategory will be directly under the top category (in this case, Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art). You’ll be able to find such fandoms by choosing to see all the fandoms in the category, or to see all fandoms that don’t have a subcategory. You can of course also filter for language and/or country of origin of the canon source.

      Although we haven’t finalized what it will be called, there will be a button alongside the subcategory buttons that will bring up all fandoms that are not part of any subcategory. Hopefully that will make it clearer that those fandoms are there.
      You can see a mock-up of the current design proposal in Figure 2 of this news post.

  Those fandoms would go directly under the top category, Animation, Comics, Manga & Other Sequential Art, and you would be able to filter for them by viewing all fandoms in the category (which includes those the subcategories) or all fandoms in that category that do not belong to any subcategory. You will also be able to find them by country of origin and/or language of canon source.

How would the top category/subcategory viewing work? When you click on the top category, you'll see the list of subcategories as if they were fandoms (possibly formatted differently--bolder or larger) and then a list of the "miscellaneous" (non-English, non-anime etc.) fandoms in Animation, Comics Etc?

  The exact look of the interface will be defined by AD&T (the Archive’s coding and design committee), but there will be buttons to reach all fandoms not in a subcategory and all fandoms in the category, which will appear in parallel to the subcategories.

I think sorting everything that doesn't fit into one of the proposed subcategories in the top category only has the potential to be a very bad idea. I fear must people will look down the list of subcategories, not find what they're looking for there and come to the conclusion that it doesn't exist at all. Why not give all these assorted work their own subcategory named something like Other Comics and Animations?

  All fandoms not in a subcategory will be filterable by a button that will appear in parallel to the subcategories (and a button to reach all fandoms in the category). The name of the button still hasn't been defined, but practically speaking it would work as you suggest.

    Yeah, I remember feeling the same thing then but never got around to commenting. I still think a proper Other subcategory would be best. It's the way this kind of problem is usually solved and it's what people are going to expect. Noone's going to be looking for some special button over on the side when they can't find what they want in the subcategory list.

      Seconding this. Every single time a CatChange-related idea comes up, every place I've seen it discussed, there is always someone -- if not multiple someones -- asking where items that don't fit into the listed subcategories are supposed to go.
      The lack of an "Other" subcategory is counterintuitive and confusing. Part of user-friendliness is giving users the kind of setup they expect. (Unless the logistical advantages to a new setup are so great that they're worth the headaches for users. That isn't the case here.)

        Agreed. According to staff the last time this came up, they thought "other" would be exclusionary, but it's clear from the comments on this post that it's exactly the opposite; not having an "other" category for stuff not in a subcategory is more exclusionary.

      For all intents and purposes, the button would function as an Other subcategory — though the decision for the label still hasn't been finalized, it would look the same and work in the same way as a subcategory.

        The difference is in how things will work behind the scenes. For example, it won’t be a subcategory that the wranglers will need to add, but will instead be the default for any fandom without an assigned subcategory.

  Thank you for your feedback. The English-language subcategories spell out their language explicitly, but anime/manga (and possible future subcategories such as Manhua and Bande Dessinée) don’t, making an “other-language” subcategory potentially confusing.
  Currently the fandoms that would fall under such a subcategory will be accessible by choosing to see all fandoms _not_ in a subcategory (it’s not finalized what that choice will be called, but there seems to be a preference for some variant of “other….”), and also by filtering for particular languages and/or countries of origin.

Would you be able to place your story under two subcategories if it fits? I know that some writers like to crossover not just two different cartoons/animes but crossover within the specific fandom (for example, a fic that has Young Justice characters based on the comic books team up with characters known from Justice League Unlimited cartoon series). Aside from that, I think this is a great idea!

  The current proposal won’t affect how you tag your works. You’ll still be free to tag with whatever fandom or combination of fandoms you feel best describes your source material, regardless of what media those fandoms are associated with.
  The subcategories under discussion here are subcategories for _fandoms themselves_, rather than the works in those fandoms. They’re designed to break up the list of fandoms on the Archive into smaller, more specific chunks to make it easier for a user browsing the list to find fandoms of interest to them.

I think Comic Strips should be separated from Graphic Novels. There's an essential difference between Doonesbury or 9 Chickweed Lane and "From Hell." I could actually see Webcomics and Comic Strips going together more easily. XKCD is much closer to Foxtrot than it is to "X-Men."

I still hate that (here and everywhere else) the VERY DIFFERENT anime adaptation I prefer cannot be placed in a separate category from the source manga.
Unfortunately, even within my fandom, manga fans who don't know the frustration of looking for solely anime-canon fic are the overwhelming majority--so this will never be anything but a lost cause for the few like me.
