“I hate you” Keith says, voice heavy with hurt, heavy with the weight crumbling through it.
Lance just hums, scratching his fingers against Keith's scalp in soothing motions. “I know…” he changes his motions to combing through Keith's hair detangling every soft strand.
“It's ok to cry you know” he suggests oh so softly and Keith hates it, he hates this.
“I cant cry…not yet” and he's fighting with every fiber of his being not to break down with lances comfort. The moment he cries it's over, the moment he cries it's real…and keith can't accept that he refuses to. This wasn’t how things were supposed to go and yet here Keith is looking in the mirror at a suit the garrison provided.
A suit he never wanted to wear in the first place. Not for this, not for him-
Then he's shutting the door to his apartment leaving lance behind. Then he's walking up under the clouded sky, ready to burst with heavens tears.
Then, he's standing beside the others looking down at a gravestone carved of the most brilliantly blue space rocks that glitter with lance's name carved right into it. And keith's mind races with the day it happened.
With the mission gone so horribly wrong, with the screams, the static, the overwhelming crash of sounds against his senses.
With lances last goodbye in his private coms.
With his last words being “I love you”
And Keith cries with the rain that crashes down with him.
