Chapter 10: Duck Cake

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

“ Kris! Can you come in here,” Tenna called, leaning on the table. Spamton leaned against the counter, arms crossed over his chest.

“ Whyyyyyyyyyyyy,” Kris whined from the living room.

“ We’re picking the cake for your birthday!” Tenna called back, instantly the sound of excited screams and running footsteps filled the air.

“ You sure you want to handle this?” Spamton asked, Tenna waved him off.

“ You didn’t want them to pick a cake outside your skillset but luckily, my skillset is higher than yours,” Tenna put a hand to his chest as he bragged.

“ You sure about that?” Spamton asked with a chuckle.

“ I host a cooking show !” Tenna gasped in mock offense. Things had been tense for the two adult darkners. Both were still tired, both were still stressed, both were still scared. But they had also started to live with it.

Spamton didn’t know if that scared him or not.

“ Okay, okay,” Spamton dropped the debate as the kids entered the room.

“ Cake! Cake! Cake!” They chanted, getting in chairs so they could look at the book.

“ Alright, alright, calm down folks!” Tenna slid the book to the human at the table, “ Remember Noelle, Kris gets to pick,” He reminded her. Kris opened the book, and started flipping through the book.

Spamton leaned on the table, curious as to which cake Kris would pick. He’d see, then he’d head out.

“ There's a chocolate cake-” Kris stuck out their tongue, “ Right of course, “ Tenna laughed at the reaction, “ there's a butterscotch cinnamon cake, you like those.” Kris turned the page, “ Or not…”

“ I dunno why you’re trying to guess, Kris is unpredictable,” Spamton reminded his husband who sighed.

“ OH! Christmas tree cake!” Noelle pointed at the image of a cake made to look like a tree. Tenna playfully tugged on her braid.

“ We can do that for your birthday, but it’s Kris’s,” Kris gasped and pointed to the page.

“ Duck cake!” They pointed to the page, Spamton raised an eyebrow, then looked at Tenna, who he could see had physically deflated.

“ Uh… the um Duck Cake?” It wasn’t a flat sheet cake with ducks on it, but a 3d model of a duck. Complete with an open bill.

Arguably the hardest cake in the book.

“ Yeah!” Kris grinned, and Tenna nodded.

“ Alright then, Duck cake it is!” He laughed nervously, Spamton turned to grab his coat.

“ Well good luck with that, kids remember be good for Tenna-”

“ Where are you going?” Noelle asked, Spamton rolled his eyes as he pulled on his coat.

“ I told you kids yesterday, I’m going to Card Kingdom,  No you can not come this time, I’ll be too distracted to watch you, maybe next time, and your spending the day with Tenna,”

“ It’s not fair you got to bring Kris to Card Kingdom.” Spamton adjusted his tie as Noelle pointed to the human.

“ Kris was sick , and I needed to bring them because Seam is a mage who knows more about humans than I do, his lightworld form interacts with more humans than mine does.” He reminded her.

“ Besides! We hardly ever spend time with just the three of us!” Tenna offered, Spamton smoothed his hair back as he stepped into the livingroom, only to nearly trip on the kid’s toys.

The living room was like an explosion of toys and activities.

“ Alternatively,” Spamton started, and Tenna followed him into the living room.

“ Oh… yeah, you kids need to clean this up first though.” Both kids groaned.

“ Whyyyyyyyy?” They both whined.

“ Because we can’t see the floor,” Tenna gestured to the floor which was hidden under crayons, trucks and dolls. Spamton nudged a dinosaur to the side as he made his way to the front door.

“ But why do we have to!” Kris complained.

“ It’s your mess!” Tenna was trying not to laugh and remain serious. The phone rang in Spamton’s office, and he froze, hand over the door knob. He swallowed hard before turning back to Tenna.

“ Tenna, you remembered the thing we talked about?” Spamton asked, and Tenna nodded, giving him a thumbs up.

“ Yep Yep Yep! Don’t worry, no outside activities unless Ramb shows up or something,” Tenna waved him off, Spamton nodded back.

“ Okay…. Bye kids have fun,” Spamton left the apartment. He hadn’t explained the extent of the phone, but he used what happened in Cyber City as a foil for it. Explaining that he didn’t feel safe with the kids being out of the apartment without eyes on them. Since there were two kids he wanted two sets of eyes.

Tenna expressed his concern that that was overprotecting them, but Spamton didn’t budge. So the TV agreed that the kids wouldn’t leave the apartment without two supervising adults. Those adults could be Tenna, Spamton, Bill, Ramb or Mike. But no one else.

The kids were starting to get cabin fever though, so it wasn’t a long term solution. Part of the reason for their constant whining, Spamton needed a more permanent solution. He needed advice and he didn’t know who else to turn to.

“ Alright kids, you know the deal, I’ll make the cake for your birthday party,” Tenna poked the top of Kris’s head, who giggled, “ You two tidy up the mess,” He turned towards the kitchen.

“ Awe we don’t wanna do that,” Noelle complained, Kris nodded.

“ Yeah we wanna help with the cake!” they added.

“ Well that’s not happening til the mess is cleaned up,” Tenna stated bluntly as he turned back to the table and picked up the cook book. He examined the recipe.

“ But why do we have to do it?” Noelle complained as they both followed him into the kitchen, Tenna inhaled deeply to stuff down the frustration that started to form in him. He was over tired, so he was quick to anger lately. He tried hard not to take it out on the kids, but he started to worry he was taking it out on his staff.

No time to dwell on that now.

Because you made the mess,” Tenna answered calmly, “ So it’s your responsibility to clean it up.” He set the cookbook down and opened the fridge to get the ingredients out of it.

“ Can’t someone else do it,” Kris asked.

“ Like who?” Tenna asked, setting the ingredients on the table.

“ I dunno…. Like you?” Noelle asked, and Tenna had to stop again. He took another breath then shut the fridge door. Turning to the kids with a forced smile.

“ How about this, clean up the living room, and I’ll give you kids 100 points,” He offered, the kids exchanged looks then turned back to Tenna with seemingly innocent smiles.

Familiar innocent smiles .

“ 10,000,” Kris stated.

“ Yeah that's like a point a thing,” Noelle agreed, “ Very fair,” Tenna pressed his hands together and put them to his mouth. Trying not to get frustrated, but also trying not to laugh. They definitely spent too much time with Spamton, and besides that there were definitely not 10,000 toys on the floor.

“ .. 200.” Tenna decided, the kids exchanged looks again, then crossed their arms.

“ 1000,” The kids settled on.

“ I’m not paying you 1000 points to clean up your own mess,” Tenna huffed.

“ Why not?”

“ I shouldn’t be paying you at all! It’s your own mess!” He snapped with exasperation, luckily the kids took it more as him playing with them then actually losing his cool. That was easier to recover from… he assumed….

“ Why should we? What’s in it for us!” Noelle asked, and Tenna groaned in frustration.

“ 500 points, take it or leave it,” He deadpanned, the kids hurried into the livingroom, seeming to have agreed to that.

“ Great, now, back to this…” He sighed, turning back to the cake ingredients.

“I hate the guards around here, why is everyone so insistent I speak to the kings, I don’t even like them !” Spamton huffed irritably as he finally got a moment alone with the jester. Who cackled.

“ They are bored bored, the kingdom runs itself, so they have nothing better to do do,” He explained, Spamton sighed heavily.

“ Noticed there was a cradle in the court.” Spamton offered as he looked around, “ And A  new guy?”

“ Yes yes yes, now who's behind on the news! Surprised you didn’t hear!” Jevil sang, “ that’s the prince of Spades, child of the king of spades and your queen!” He pressed his finger to Spamton’s nose, squishing it.

“ The prince of spades, seriously ? I had no idea,” Spamton looked back at the castle, then turned to Jevil once more, “ well that must be exciting for the kingdom, a new audience so to speak.” Jevil shrugged.

“ All the same to me me, Seam is excited to show Baby Lancer tricks but …” He trailed off then shrugged off then pulled out his juggling balls to fidget with while he continued, “ The new guy as you put it, is his nanny, his name is Roulxs Kaard .”

“ … Roulxs Kaard… is . . . why doesn't the King of Spades watch his son?” Spamton asked, and Jevil shrugged.

“ Doesn’t want to, and the Kaard of Roulxs is more than willing to do anything to climb the ladder ladder.” He explained, “ But you didn’t come here to discuss the royal family family, what do you need Salesman?” Jevil asked. Spamton sighed heavily.

“ I … your deal with our benefactor… what did you get from it?” Spamton asked, Jevil grinned at him.

“ You know the rules rules, secret secret never tell,” He grinned, Spamton frowned.

“ I just need to know if it’s the same as what I got, because I don’t think it is, and I need to know if it’s worth it-”

“ A simple answer I can give give is Freedom!” Jevil grinned, and Spamton growled.

“ Yeah, okay Freedom, I got that, that’s what he offered me too, but like … the specifics. Because in my case-” He felt the tightness around his neck and made a choking sound. Jevil actually stopped his juggling to stare, his smile faltering as the third ball fell to the ground.

“ You know the rules.” He said again. In a more serious tone.Spamton took a deep breath then sighed.

“ Right..” His voice was hoarse again, “ I just… I’m starting to think it’s not…. Worth it …”

“ Not worth it?” Jevil asked in shock, then he laughed, “ Not worth it ? Freedom  is not worth it! Worth it!” Spamton rubbed his neck while Jevil laughed and mocked him, “ What could be more important the Freedom you’d get get!?” Spamton mentally prepared himself for the potential choking when he spoke again. It didn’t come thankfully though.

“ He’s threatening my family,” Spamton stressed and he had expected the jester to get some kind of seriousness, but Jevil just stared at him, grinning. “ He somehow has a lightner stalking Tenna and scaring him, he’s sending … creatures to come after my kids, I’m afraid to leave the apartment with the kids ! It’s a problem! And I don’t know if any amount of freedom , if that’s what this guy is actually offering, is worth … this.” He gestured to the area to refer to his situation.

There was another pause.

Then Jevil laughed.

“ So?” he asked, Spamton stared at him.

“ So? So?! So people I care about are on the line- what if it was Seam he was threatening huh?” He asked, pointing in the direction of the castle, “ what if Seam came to you saying a Lightner was threatening his very existence,” Hell it would probably be easier since he was just a stuffed toy, “ what if our benefactor admitted that he put Seam in danger til you cooperated!” Spamton demanded and while Jevil’s smile faltered it didn’t fall.

“ I have a plan for Seam Seam,” He said simply. Bending down to pick up his lost juggling ball and start juggling once more, “ I intend to show him freedom, but only once I attain it first, once I know the path!”

“ Oh great, good for you!” Spamton huffed, “ Look it’s not just Tenna in danger, it’s the kids too, he wants me to just hand them over when he won’t tell me what he’s gonna do with them. Hell he’s the reason they’re even here! Which is something I don’t understand! Why did he let them stay long enough to get sent to me and Tenna if he needed them back?!” Jevil hummed in confusion.

“ That is a good question question, but who am I to judge the ways of our benefactor,” He sang, Spamton sighed.

“ What is your plan for Seam?” He asked, and Jevil grinned.

“ For me to know and never tell tell, “ Spamton deflated, “ It wouldn’t really work for you and your . . . situation,” Jevil gave a low chuckle, “ It seems to me me, that you want. Out. ” Spamton was quiet. He hadn’t admitted it, not outloud but yeah. He wanted out.

“ But we both know it’s not that simple right?” Spamton ran a hand over his hair.

“ No . . . And personally I don’t understand, but who am I to judge how you wish to live live,” He grinned, when Spamton didn’t respond his smile fell. “ I have . . .an idea, it’s a false hope hope, but it’s your only hope hope,” Jevil offered, Spamton frowned, but nodded.

“ What is it?”

“ The Fool you must follow to the truth that’s hard to swallow!” Jevil sang as he turned and started for the castle. Spamton hesitated before following.

“ Oh dang it!” Tenna frowned as he looked at his awkwardly shaped cake head. He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, “ Well ducks don’t need round heads…” He decided, turning back to the body.

“ Tenna! We’re done!” Noelle called as they ran back into the kitchen, the TV nodded, leaving the cake parts on the table so he could check the living room.

“....” the toys were still there, they were just organized into piles instead of put away. Even a puzzle was still out of the box. Just piled up in the corner, “ this is not tidied up.” Tenna deadpanned, the kids giggled before replying.

“ Yes it is! See you can see the floor!” Noelle pointed to the living room floor. Tenna shook his head, rubbing his forehead.

“ No. No no, the toys need to be put away,” Tenna scolded.

“ That wasn’t part of the deal!” Noelle complained.

“ Should have read the fine print,” Tenna retorted back, “ Put the toys away,” He turned back to the kitchen, and picked up the bowl of icing to start icing the cake with it. He was about halfway done with the body of the duck before his frustrated brain caught up to his actions.

“ Wait… ah, you’re supposed to do icing at the end.” He complained to himself. Setting the bowl down. Then after a pause he picked the bowl back up.

“ It’s fine. It probably doesn’t affect anything.”

“ Tenna!” Noelle complained as she reentered the kitchen, Tenna rolled his eyes but it went unnoticed.

“ Are you done?”

“ Nope, We’re bored.”

“ Yes and I’m Tenna, go tidy.” he answered, Noelle pouted and reached out for the bowl of icing.

“ Can I help?”

“ No, Noelle, I just told you, you have to finish tidying the living room.” Tenna deadpanned.

“ Tenna how do the prize balls work?” Kris asked, suddenly distracting Tenna, who turned to them.

“ They have… prizes in them?” He answered. Kris tilted their head.

“ For who?”

“ for my contestants,” Tenna answered, “ I sometimes host a quiz show at work, people answer questions and they get points. They can then spend those points on prizes . . or the gift shop… or the bar.”

“  Can we be contestants?” Kris asked, Tenna laughed.

“ Maybe someday but not anytime soon,” Tenna turned back to the bowl to discover Noelle was sneaking spoonfuls of frosting while Kris had him distracted, “ Hey!” He pulled the bowl away from her, making her giggle.

“ But how do the prize balls work?” she quickly asked to distract Tenna once more.

“ I just told you-”

“ No the plastic bits,” She emphasised, Tenna glanced at Kris to make sure they weren’t trying to steal the frosting as well.

“ You mean the gatcha balls?” He asked, summoning one with a flick of his wrist. She grinned and nodded excitedly.

“ Yeah! Sometimes we get food from those, but they don’t go bad! How does that work?” She asked, Tenna hummed, setting the bowl down so he could summon three more gatchas and started juggling them. Poorly but still able to keep them moving and the kids entertained.

“ Oh well see, they're made from my magic, and they keep whatever I put in them preserved in whatever state it’s in til it’s opened!” He explained,

“ So  if I put Nice cream in there it won’t melt?” Noelle asked, Tenna shook his head.

“ Nope. No melting, no aging, no nothing, it will stay locked in time.”

“ What if you put something alive in there?” Kris asked, pointing to it, Tenna blinked. The Gatchas falling to the table, one landing on the semi frosted cake.

“ Um… well that’s a bit more complicated … they’d… well stay in whatever state we put them in there in,” Tenna explained, “ If they’re awake they stay awake until their let out, and if they’re asleep, they’d stay asleep til we let them out.”

“ Has anyone been in there for a long time?” Noelle asked, and Tenna rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably.

“ Well… A pippins did get stuck in there for about three days…” He admitted, “ and he was awake the whole time… oh god was it Battat? That might explain a few things…  Anyway , so now we try very hard not to let that happen .”

“Cuz he was awake?” Noelle asked, “ What if he was asleep?”

“ Well then it would have been like a three day coma, but it wasn’t, he wasn’t , and we don’t let that happen again,” Tenna emphasised.

“ What's a coma,” Kris asked, and Tenna rolled his eyes.

“ Is the living room clean yet?” He asked instead of answering. The kids groaned again, “ Go get it done, and I’ll let you lick the bowl,” Tenna said as he scooped the gatcha ball up off the cake, and tossed it into the trash.

The kids slid off their chairs and marched back into the living room. Tenna returned to icing the cake parts.

“ Tell me, sales man, are you familiar with status Status?” Jevil asked as they entered the royal library. Spamton looked around at the dusty books, most on royal history and various rule books for many card games or magic tricks. The bookshelves were taller than even Tenna was. Even that tv would need a heck of a ladder to reach the top shelf.

“ I mean I know they’re bosses or royalty , depending on how they view themselves.” For example the four kings, and Queen saw themselves as royalty while Tenna preferred to think of himself as an employer.

“ then there's their …” Spamton snapped to think of an appropriate word, “ Court? Lieutenants? Their right hand people,” he settled on, “ Like Swatch and Task for Queen, Seam, you, and maybe that roulxe guy for the kings…. Mike for Tenna,”

“ Surprised you didn’t say you for the Tv tv,” Jevil teased, and when Spamton didn’t answer he continued ,“ But yes yes, that's the basics, the simple thing they teach to the kiddies kiddies, but there's another status, above the court, possibly above the royalty themselves.” Jevil explained, “ Known as a bonus boss .” Spamton blinked.

“ That’s… a stupid name.” he stated, crossing his arms.

“ Regardless!” Jevil climbed the bookshelves to get to the book he was after and dropped it onto the floor behind him before scrambling down once more.

It made a loud thud that echoed through the library. Spamton swore he heard someone shush him before Jevil Continued.

“ Some are born that way, some are made made,” He sang as he dropped himself. Bouncing a little as he hit the floor.

“ These… Bonus bosses, do they.. Know , they’re bonus bosses?” He asked, Jevil grinned and opened the book.

“ I most certainly do do,” he either had the page mesmerized or he was just weirdly lucky. Because he opened the page to his own face.

“ You’re a bonus boss?” Spamton gasped, leaning on the table to look at the page.

“ Oh yes yes, I’m a joker card, a wild card,” Jevil laughed, “ I can do anything!” Spamton hummed, flipping the page.

On the other side was a list of his attacks. Jevil switched to a different page.

“ Ah ah ah, those are my secrets~”

“They're in a book.” Spamton gestured to it

“ A diary is a book and yet it still holds secrets secrets, ” Spamton decided to move on.

“ So…. What you're suggesting is ….” Spamton knew it was obvious but he was tired, his brain wasn't catching up like it should be. Jevil rolled his eyes.

“ Level up.” Jevil popped his p.

“ How?” Spamton sighed heavily, “ how could I possibly level up, I don't have anything to do that with.” This time Jevil shrugged, sticking his tongue out much like a cat would.

“ I can’t spoon feed you all the answers Mailman man, You’ll need to figure that part out by yourself self.” Spamton sighed heavily, flipping through the book again. It seemed to be a record of Darkworld Bonus bosses.

Jevil was included under “Card Kingdom” was a handful of others.

“ Who are these other guys?”

“ Long gone,” Jevil answered, Spamton hummed, turning the book, “ Fate has a weird way of making sure each world only gets one at a time time,” Spatmon hesitated.

“ So… if I want to become a bonus Boss, I have to make sure there isn’t one already in tv world?” He asked, Jevil shrugged.

“ Maybe, I don’t make the rules rules,” Jevil was starting to get bored, Spamton could tell. So He turned back to the book, flipping through it, thankfully other darkworlds were also recorded here.

While trying to flip through to TV world he found Cyber City. Easily skipping over various security programs that had at one point been considered a Bonus boss before being outdated.

Then something caught his eye. He froze, before flipping back to the page in question. His eyes growing wide.

“ What the fuck?”

“ ooooh we know him?” Jevil sang, and interest peeked as he popped his head off his shoulder with his spring-like neck so he could look over Spamton’s shoulder without moving.

“ Yeah… Yeah I know this guy,” Spamton tapped at the messy but still recognizable image of Ramb, “ He works in TV world as a freaking bar tender, he’s not a bonus boss , I mean, he lets Noelle put bows in his hair or on his ears or whatever those things on top of his head are, he-he’s a plug .” Spamton sputtered in disbelief, Jevil hummed as he tilted his head.

“ Says here, he’s a power strip . Stip.” He corrected, Spamton cursed under his breath before flipping the page.

“ He’s still a plug !” Spamton snapped, “ and another thing if he’s so damn powerful why is he serving drinks to assholes that talk shit about him behind his back?!” He asked. Jevil shrugged.

“ I never met the guy guy, maybe ask him him?” Jevil made to close the book but Spamton stopped him, then in one quick motion ripped Ramb’s page out of the book, Jevil cackled, “ Ooooooooh destruction of property.Property.”

“ Shut up, no one will notice, there's so many books.” Spamton folded the page and tucked it away in his coat. Allowing Jevil to close the book, and toss it aside.

“ So when will you bring the kiddies back back?” Jevil asked, and Spamton raised an eyebrow.

“ I dunno, when I don’t think they’ll get snatched by heavenly figures,” he huffed as he smoothed his hair back.

“ Awe~ That will never happen ! Happen!” Jevil started to pout, making the Addison scoff.

“ Why do you care so much?” He asked, Jevil grinned.

“ I enjoy playing game games, I want to play,” Spamton scoffed again.

“ Maybe when things cool down, Or if I can convince Bill to come here with me to help keep an eye on them… I like having at least one set of eyes per kid, you know?” He explained, the jester gave him an offended look.

“ I have two eyes eyes!” He complained, pointing to them.

“ I don’t trust you to keep them focused on a child,” was the Addison’s answer, Jevil chuckled.

“ You wound me me,” He cackled.

“ Tenna! We’re done,” Noelle’s voice was starting to sound less whimsical and more like nails on a chalkboard the longer this went on. He checked the time before turning towards the living room.

“ Yeah?” He looked in and saw yes. Finally the toys were put away.

“ That’s good! Good, I’ve finished icing the cake so you two can have the bowl,” Tenna informed them. The kids cheered and rushed back to the kitchen. Tenna handed them the bowl to fight over on the floor. Reminding the TV more of wild animals from his nature channel than children as they ravished the bowl.

He couldn’t be bothered to care too much though. It had been a long day, lots of back and forth negotiating. Negotiating was not Tenna’s strong suit.

“ Okay, now … the head…” He gingerly picked up the frosted cake head, he set it on top of the body before getting the small wooden spear that kept the cake in place.

However Tenna learned the hard way why the frosting was done at the end. It made the cake too slippery, and it rolled right off. Falling to the floor with a loud splat.

Tenna froze, he didn’t notice but the kids on the floor did too. As if even they knew Tenna’s last straw had finally snapped.

He growled, and slammed the thin wooden steak into the table, making it snap when it failed to pierce the wood. Then he cursed and kicked a chair before leaving the kitchen completely and going into the bedroom he and Spamton shared, shutting the door and pressing his back to it.

Hand still on the door knob as he realized what he just did. He lost it in front of the kids. They were probably scared of him now! They probably hated him now! Two whole years of taking care of those kids and he just dumped it all down the drain.

Over a cake.

He slid down the door and hid his face in his knees.

After a long pause Tenna heard a knock on the door.

“ Tenna? Are you okay?” Noelle’s voice was soft and careful. It only fueled Tenna’s guilt.

“ Yeah Princess, I’m fine,” He sighed, covering the space where his eyes should be. There was a long pause, then Noelle spoke again.

“ Kris said maybe we could make it look like the duck had its head cut off?” She suggested, Tenna leaned his head back against the door. Letting his leg fall flat against the floor.

“ Yeah okay, I’ll be out in a minute.” He sighed. He heard the front door open, and Noelle rushed to it, probably Spamton coming home.

Tenna felt panic hit him, he’d see the mess, he’d see proof of his lack of control. He’d never trust him with the kids again! He’d-

“ Tenna?” Spamton knocked on the door before opening it. Which he did with surprising ease despite Tenna still leaning against it.

This was because the TV had subconsciously shrunk down to being the size of a teddy bear. So the door knocked him over.

“ Oh, shoot I’m sorry, are you alright?” The Addison took a knee, “ what happened?” He asked. Tenna turned to him in disbelief as he got to his feet.

“ What Happened?! Didn’t you see it! I made such a mess! I ruined the cake, I blew up in front of the kids, and and-” He cut off when the addison just looked more confused.

“ I . . . didn’t see anything like that,” He opened the door more so he could look across the living room and into the kitchen. Tenna leaned around the door to also look.

The chair was back where it belonged, and the cake was sitting unfinished on the table. Tenna stared almost numbly at the lack of the mess he’d made, “ Maybe the kids took care of it for you?” Spamton suggested, “ Would explain the large amount of paper towels in the trash,” Tenna glanced over at the kids quietly building a small town of blocks.

“ Oh… I… um.. Thanks kids,” He offered sheepishly, and Noelle smiled at him while Kris gave him a thumbs up, “ I guess I better finish this cake then,” He forced himself to grow so he could comfortably finish his work. He’d have to apologize to the kids later for blowing up in front of them, “ Did you um..  Get what you need from Card Kingdom?” He asked, opening the fridge and another bowl to make red frosting.

Beheaded duck it was… It was Kris they were talking about and it was October.

“ Not exactly, Honestly walked away with more questions than answers . . but … I got a kind of lead,” He got in a chair and leaned on the table, “ Do you know about Bonus Bosses?” He asked, Tenna gave a shrug.

“ I know they exist, but that’s about it,” He admitted, “ I mean they’re like mini bosses right? Hasn’t been one in TV world in …” he trailed off as he tried to recall, “ I can’t even remember…”

“ Ramb is one.” Spamton deadpanned, Tenna hummed, mixing in the food coloring with his frosting mix before applying it to the duck’s neck.

“ That’s good for Ramb.” He said simply, Spamton raised an eyebrow.

“ Did you know he was a bonus boss?”

“ No, no clue, and it does surprise me a little bit but…” He shrugged, “ I mean does it matter? He’s not the one in charge around here, I am, and to be honest I doubt he wants to be the one in charge around here. Does this look beheaded without being Gorey?” He asked, Spamton gave a nod.

“ Yeah…. But how do you not know this guy is-”

“ Why are you so interested in Mini bosses?” Tenna asked, Spamton shook his head.

“ No not mini bosses, Mike is a mini boss, the weather duo are a mini boss power couple, Ramb is a Bonus Boss ,” Spamton specified, Tenna rolled his eyes, and he was sure Spamton noticed based on the glare. He must have a physical tell despite not having eyes.

“ Okay okay, why are you so interested in Bonus Bosses,” They were all the same weren’t they?

“ I… don’t know,” Spamton admitted, his hand fisting in his hair, “ Guess I thought it might help…”

“ What? With the Asgore situation?” Tenna asked, and Spamton shrugged.

“ Among other things… I’ll find time to talk to Ramb about it.”

“ I Don’t know if a mini boss-”

“ Bonus Boss.”

“ Right, right, I don’t think that will help when it comes to lightners.” Tenna suggested, and Spamton grumbled.

“ Better than nothing,” He argued, and Tenna shrugged.

“ If you say so…” He finally finished the cake, “ What do you think? Salvaged it?” he asked, and Spamton examined the very beheaded duck cake.

“ Yeah…. It looks good, Kris!” Spamton called and the human ran in with the deer girl not far behind, “ What do you think?” He gestured to Tenna’s beheaded cake, Tenna wasn’t too surprised to see the grin stretch across Kris’s face since it was their idea. But it still filled him with relief.

Then Kris pointed to the leftover red Frosting.

“ Can we have that?” Tenna almost said no since they had a lot of frosting but then decided against it, sighing and just handing over the bowl. The kids cheered and ran towards the living room.

“ Ha, long day?” Spamton asked, Tenna fell into his own chair.

“ You’re making Noelle’s cake.” was his response.

Notes:

I wasn't planning on Spamton finding out Ramb was a bonus boss until main game, originally it was going to be a more kinda " If I had known" thing where Spamton would find out during Chapter 3 of the game events, and Ramb flat out says "Well I would have helped you if I knew," meanwhile Jevil wouldn't help more than he already has ( And maybe one more thing he does later but then that's about it) because HE'S still loyal to Gaster. Well Loyals a strong word but it works here.

but it didn't make sense for there to only be a record of Jevil but not Ramb.... Also I'm still working on what Ramb's stat and skill set would be I've seen a handful of takes a lot use inspiration from the WereWires ( For obvious reasons) and the Mantal which also makes sense to me but I dunno if I like the image of the long slenderman esc form, I also don't like anything I've come up with ( It's like a Cerberus or hydra mixed with a werewire, I'm not good at monster design) and I don't want to fall back on my usual thing of just *Blank* + Centipede = Monster. ( I don't mean to do that it just keeps happening)

ANYWAY I had originally planned for the reveal to be different but this fic is messing with my timeline. This tense stuff wasn't' supposed to happen til closer to age 7 but now it's happening sooner, and Lancer wasn't supposed to be around til after age seven but his cradles there and given that I want a certain character to be the same age as Lancer ( If you follow my tumbler you might know who I'm talking about ;-) ) Guess we're gonna be taking a detour in the plot soon.

Notes:

Admittedly I stole one of Distractible old Ad reads for a bit in this chapter One of their ads for Helix sleep. Specifically called " He's in the god damn Matress" ... God I love Distractible ad reads and I think they'd be right up Spamton's alley.
