Chapter Text
The Isle of Dusk was quiet.
Not silent, Dusk was never truly silent, not with its ever-shifting sky of rose and gold, not with the hum of its ancient magic but quiet in a way that suggested the world itself was holding its breath.
Inside the sandstone manor, now expanded and cherished by generations, the halls were lined with portraits of a long, extraordinary life.
Nesta and Eris with their children as infants.
The first democratic council of Autumn.
The building of Dusk University.
Aster’s ballet premiere.
Nesta and Eris in their coronation robes.
Hesper and Samar’s inventions that revolutionized transport between the Courts.
Ember’s ascent as High Lady of Dusk.
Nesta and Eris’ return to Dusk
Bryce’s wedding to Defender Quinlan
Holidays with Gwyn and Azriel
Meals out with Emerie and Hypaxia
Trips away with Bryce and Hunt
Their grandchildren’s naming ceremonies
Nearly a millennia of memories. The walls seemed to remember it all.
And now, at the end of everything, they remembered softness.
The master bedroom had been opened to allow their entire family to gather, children, grandchildren, even the first few great-grandchildren. Thirteen adults, each with their own partners and broods, surrounded the enormous bed that Nesta and Eris had shared for many centuries.
Nesta lay against mountains of pillows, silvering hair long and loose down her shoulders. Time had lined her face gently, like the soft etchings of wind on stone. The fire of her eyes remained, muted now, but still unmistakably hers.
Eris lay beside her, his hair white as frost, still handsome, still smiling in that sly, warm way that had once driven her mad and had eventually become the greatest comfort she’d ever known.
His hand was laced in hers. Their soulbond glowed faintly, a steady, soft pulse between them.
The same rhythm. The same slow, fading beat.
Their children stood closest, Aster, Lyra, Ember, Hesper, Samar, Orion, Bryce Junior, and their three younger siblings; each centuries old now, each practically immortal, yet every one of them crying like they were young again.
“Are you in pain?” Aster whispered.
Nesta shook her head. “No, my sweet. None at all. Just tired.”
Eris chuckled softly. “Your mother has been saying that for three hundred years.”
Nesta gave his arm a weak swat. “And you’ve been insufferable for four hundred.”
Their grandchildren laughed through tears.
Bryce Junior, now High Lady of Autumn for seven centuries, knelt beside the bed, her voice quiet and shaking. Her mate, Defender Quinlan, resting a calming hand on her shoulder.
“You don’t have to do this at the same time,” she whispered. “You can stay longer. We can… we can help you.”
Nesta reached out and touched her cheek. “Oh, my love. I’ve lived longer, and more fully, than I ever dreamed possible. And we made a promise.”
Eris squeezed her hand gently. “We came into this new life together. We built worlds together. We choose to leave them together.”
Aster sobbed openly, leaning into Samar.
Outside, the sky of Dusk shimmered with streaks of gold and violet, as though mirroring the crackling heart of their soulbond.
Eris turned his head toward Nesta, his eyes soft, a tear sliding freely.
“Wife,” he murmured, “I have loved you in every form you’ve ever taken. Fire, steel, fear, hope. You gave me a life worth living.”
“And you,” Nesta breathed, “taught me how to love the world again.”
Her fingers tightened around his. “You were my beginning. You are my ending.”
Their children leaned in, some taking Nesta’s free hand, others clutching Eris’s shoulder. Grandchildren pressed against their parents, silent, reverent.
Nesta whispered, “Stay with me.”
“Always,” Eris said. “Even after the last breath.”
Their soulbond ignited; bright gold, then white, then clear as starlight.
Their chests rose once.
Twice.
A third time.
Then settled.
No sound. No pain. No struggle.
Just peace. Just light.
And then the magic of Dusk itself stirred.
Outside the manor windows, the sky rippled. A warm breeze swept through the room; soft, loving, like an embrace of the island that had been their salvation.
Two points of light appeared in the sky above the sea.
At first faint.
Then growing brighter.
Then blazing.
Two new stars; the twin lights of a soulbond fulfilled. ignited over the Isle of Dusk. Permanent. Unmoving. Forever glowing in tandem.
One silver-white. One ember-gold.
Nesta and Eris.
Together.
Eternal.
Home.
Their children fell to their knees, hands over their hearts. Bryce Junior whispered, voice trembling, “They’re still watching us.”
Ember wept openly, clutching her siblings.
Lyra whispered, “No. They’re still with us.”
The manor lights flickered once, like a farewell kiss, and then steadied. And outside, under a sky where dusk never truly ended, two stars burned brighter than any other.
Side by side.
As they were always meant to be.
