Andrew’s (and now also Neil’s, allegedly) house is surprisingly cosy. By no stretch of the imagination is Andrew a man with a desire to engage with interior design, but Neil’s stayed in enough places to recognise the signs of a home.
The Minyard-Hemmicks aren’t framed-photos-on-the-wall kind of people. But, the evening he moves in, Neil reads through the patchwork of paper haphazardly attached to the front and sides of the refrigerator by mismatched magnets.
One is a photocopy of Aaron Michael Minyard’s acceptance letter to medical school. Another is a horrendously explicit postcard addressed to Nicholas Hemmick from Erik Klose. Neil’s favorite, buried beneath layers of more recent college-era additions, is a high school report card commending one Andrew Minyard for ‘atypical academic performance, made all the more remarkable given his attendance, attitude to learning, and affinity for joyless destruction’. Someone wonkily highlighted ‘academic performance’; another, neater hand underlined ‘joyless destruction’ repeatedly.
It’s the evidence of a life lived; that a unit of people spent enough time in the same space to leave a lasting imprint.
Neil took the empty downstairs bedroom. It’s the largest and originally belonged to Nicky; Neil invents the backstory that he reserved it for himself under the guise of avoiding arguments between the twins. It seems like the kind of bullshit a nineteen-year-old guardian would pull if given half the chance.
The bathroom is upstairs, which gives Neil the excuse to explore that evening once Andrew leaves for his shift at Eden’s. The staircase curves around, split into two mini-flights, with the door to the bathroom at the end of the hall, two doors on the left, and one on the right. The first door on the left is a disappointment; towels and sheets. The second door, however, redeems the first.
The room is empty enough that its inhabitant is immediately obvious. There’s all the standard hardware– bed, closet, desk, bedside table– but it’s missing everything which could feasibly be removed. Only a bare mattress remains on the bed. There’s an empty mounted bracket above the desk where a desktop monitor once sat. Even the lightbulb from the ceiling fan is gone.
This is not the bedroom of someone who intends to return.
Something builds in Neil’s chest the longer he stands in the threshold; the sense that he is unwelcome and out of place, never far from his mind, rears its ugly head. Stupidly, he thinks of the shell of the Wesninski mansion after the Feds were done with it.
He’s back in the hallway before he can dwell any further on that train of thought. The last door, the one that can only be Andrew’s, looms in front of him.
This time, though, he hesitates before entering. For good reason, too; he spots the tiny piece of tape on the top corner between the door and the frame. The slightest movement of the door would make it peel away. A way of keeping track of unwanted visitors. Mary drilled it into him as protocol in every safehouse they inhabited. It only works, though, if the person entering doesn’t know to look for it.
Neil opens the door. Tape is hardly a difficult thing to replace.
Andrew’s bedroom is stark, unsurprisingly. No art on the walls and no fluffy rugs. But it’s clear that select areas have been deemed worthy of effort.
The closet is larger than Aaron’s, with a mirror set into the right side. There’s plants by the window– Neil would have expected cacti, perhaps, but instead they’re all tall and heavy-looking, with massive leaves and wide, plastic pots. The kind of things that take effort to keep alive. The nightstand doubles as a small bookshelf, with two neat rows of paperbacks tucked beneath a shallow drawer.
And the bed is heaped with at least three blankets, excluding the comforter, though no cushions beside the solitary main pillow. It’s also shoved into the back corner farthest from the window and door. He might as well have voluntarily cornered himself, Neil thinks, then sees the heavy deadbolts set into the window and door. Those definitely weren’t in Aaron or Nicky’s rooms.
Safety is a fickle thing; it took Neil a month before he could let his guard down with the Wymacks, and even then those walls came straight back up whenever David raised his voice or Abby got terse. He looks again at the placement of the bed. It lets Andrew sleep with his back to a wall, in a room with the entrances and exits as secure as possible.
Neil isn’t one for shame, nor guilt, but something unpleasant settles under his skin, like brittle layers of ice have taken up residence in the space between his capillaries.
This space is not his to invade.
He wipes his fingerprints from the door handle once he leaves– old habit– but doesn’t replace the tape. Andrew stares at him across the kitchen that evening but doesn’t call him on it.

The Edgar Allen High Controversy: the Facts, the Fiction, and the Curse

The phrase ‘Edgar Allen High’ means little to the average person. A cursory observer could assess that: a) it’s probably a high school, and b) it’s maybe an artsy high school, given the ‘Edgar Allen’ portion of the name. You would be correct on both counts. These two pieces of information are simultaneously minor and incredibly telling in the grand scheme of things.
Searches for ‘Edgar Allen High’ quintupled two weeks ago following an announcement from hit podcast host Kathy Ferdinand that the next season of her award-winning show, ‘Killings With Kathy’, would focus on the so-called Edgar Allen High Controversy. It’s a lesser-known scandal in the grand scheme of things, thanks in no small part to discomfort around the circumstances of the story breaking back in 2019. It’s a faux pas to speak ill of the dead, after all.
For the uninformed, the core, agreed-upon facts are as follows.
Edgar Allen High hosted the best high school hockey team in recent memory, with star centres Riko Moriyama and Kevin Day serving as the team’s representatives for 2015 to 2017. However, tragedy soon befell the duo: in spring of 2017, Kevin Day sustained a severe injury to his left, dominant hand and withdrew from the Edgar Allen Ravens. Over a year later, on December 10th 2018, Riko Moriyama died from a gunshot wound to the head. It was ruled a suicide two months later.
In January of 2019, reports of an abusive and toxic environment in the Edgar Allen High team began to emerge. All came from anonymous alleged former team members and the allegations were initially levelled exclusively against the coaching team. Tetsuji Moriyama, legal guardian of Riko Moriyama (and, at the time of the alleged abuse, Kevin Day) and head coach at the time, would allegedly berate and issue beatings to students as a ‘corrective measure’. By July, the reports developed further to allege that Riko Moriyama purposefully caused Kevin Day’s injury. They also alleged that Riko Moriyama perpetuated the physical and verbal abuse of a second, unnamed team member. This allegedly eventually escalated to Moriyama organising the supposed sexual assault of the unnamed team member. It is relevant to note that Tetsuji Moriyama issued a statement in August of 2019 denying all allegations against his nephew. Notably, he has never denied the allegations against himself nor his colleagues.
From April to December 2019, the West Virginia Police Department, West Virginia School Board, and National Hockey League separately investigated the Edgar Allen High Ravens. At the time of writing, no criminal charges have been filed, but the Edgar Allen Ravens have been dissolved and Tetsuji Moriyama is not an active member of the teaching nor hockey community.
The continued rumors surrounding the circumstances of the Edgar Allen Ravens remain a hotbed for speculation and misinformation. However, Kevin Day has never publicly commented upon the allegations against his former teammate.

Stop gatekeeping this shit oh my god. @peonyx essentially a bunch of Riko & Kevin’s former teammates came forward a couple years back after Riko died talking about how their high school team was crazy abusive and toxic. then some of them said Riko was the main perpetrator (other than his uncle who was their head coach) [1/?]
