Chapter Text

Your head is clouded with thoughts of last night, and before you know it, class ends, meaning you barely absorb a word of the lecture.

You should tell me to stop.

The memory loops in your head as you step into the hallway.

Then you hear your name—clear and sudden—cutting through your thoughts. You jump before you can stop yourself.

You quickly turn around, nearly colliding with Yuji as he hurries up behind you. When he sees your face, though, he slows down, hands half-raised like he's afraid he might scare you again.

"Didn't mean to scare you," he says quickly, breath a little uneven, like he jogged to catch you.

Your heart thuds against your chest as you manage to respond, "It's okay, I'm just not used to having my name yelled."

You let out a soft laugh, trying to play it off, even though nerves still flutter in your chest.

He bites back a smile as he watches you. "Guess next time I'll have to get your attention another way."

You blush, and he looks away briefly, letting his mask slip. "Truth is, I was a little nervous... actually, really fucking nervous." He looks back at you, meeting your eyes. "Because I wanted to ask you to go on a date with me. No mixed signals. A real date."

You tilt your head. "You're asking me on a date, Yuji?"

His face flushes instantly. "Yes. I am. So... will you?"

"You're kind of bad at this," you tease, unable to hold back your laugh. You can't help yourself—how unfairly cute he is like this, cheeks flushed pink, confidence slipping just enough to show how nervous he really is about asking you out.

"I know." A small smile tugs at his mouth. "I had a whole speech planned. It was worse."

You laugh—full-heartedly—and some of the tension leaves his shoulders at the sound.

“Where exactly would you take me on this very official date?” you ask, folding your arms like you’re conducting a serious interview.

A spark of mischief lights up his eyes. “Do you trust me?”

You narrow yours immediately. “Oh, absolutely not. Not when you say it like that.”

He lets out an offended little huff. “Come on. You have to trust me. I’ve got something special planned… I just want it to be a surprise.”

You study him for a second, pretending to weigh your options. “So this is how I go out, huh?” you say flatly. “Lured away with the promise of a ‘surprise.’”

He rolls his eyes, laughing at your dramatics. "Trust me?"

You bite your lip. "...Yes."

His relief is immediate, and without overthinking it, he reaches for your hand. His fingers are warm when they close around yours.

☆☆☆

The city thins in the rearview mirror as he drives.

Tall buildings slowly give way to long, open stretches of road. The sky softens as the sun sinks lower, melting into gold that bleeds into streaks of red and violet. Frost laces the empty fields and clings to the bare branches of trees, each crystal catching the last light of day.

You glance over at him. He's focused on the road, but his hands grip the steering wheel a little too tightly.

"You're nervous," you say.

He doesn't look at you. "I'm not."

"You have a death grip on the steering wheel."

He forces his hand to relax, loosening his grip. "I just want it to be good."

The quiet honesty of that makes your chest ache.

After a few more winding turns, the trees open up.

He pulls into a small overlook and cuts the engine. The silence settles around you—thick and peaceful. The valley stretches endlessly below, making everything look so small from where you're standing.

For a second, you forget to breathe as you take in the view.

Yuji doesn’t look at the view first.

He looks at you.

"Well? What do you think..?" he asks softly, anticipating your answer.

"It's..." You shake your head slightly. "I've never seen anything like this."

His expression shifts—something relieved, almost vulnerable.

"I come here when everything feels too loud," he says. "When I need everything to stop, to slow down for a second." He glances back at the sunset. "I thought maybe you'd like it too."

You look at him instead. "I do," you confess quietly. "It's perfect."

He studies your face like he's making sure you mean it. When he sees that you do, his shoulders loosen.

He gets out, walks around, and opens your door. It's simple, unceremonious, but there's something intentional in the way he holds out his hand.

You place your hand in his, taking it.

The grass crunches under your weight as you step out of the car. He spreads a blanket near the edge of the overlook, and you sit beside each other, close enough that your arms brush.

The wind is cold, but the warmth from Yuji keeps you warm.

"So this is your escape spot then," you murmur to yourself.

"Yeah." His breath fogs in front of him. "When the expectations feel like too much, like maybe I'm not... good enough?" He laughs, like what he just said sounded stupid, and he runs a hand through his hair. "It just reminds me that there's more than that."

"I know that feeling," you say, glancing over at him. He's looking back at you.

"You do?"

You nod. "I guess I'm just a little shocked that you feel that way too."

He gives a half-smile, nodding slightly at your words. "Because I’m usually cocky, act like I breeze through everything?" He laughs, but you can tell there's pain in his voice.

You meet his gaze steadily. "I don’t think you’re shallow or superficial," you say softly. "I like that you're letting me see this side of you."

Silence lingers for a moment between you as you whisper, "It really is beautiful."

"I've never seen anything more beautiful in my life." He agrees, but he's not looking at the sky.

You feel it—without looking over—you feel the weight of his gaze, the way the air between you shifts.

He shifts a little closer, his hand settling near yours on the blanket. Your fingers brush, and then his pinky drapes over yours, light and deliberate, sending a quiet warmth through you.

Your breath catches, your heart now beating against your chest in a steady rhythm.

He says your name softly. Not playful. Not teasing. Just low and gentle.

"I know I messed things up, that I complicated everything," he admits. "I freaked out. I do that when something starts to matter."

You turn to fully look at him.

"I'm not making excuses. But I want you to know I'm done with that. I won't throw away everything that matters to me because of some stupid fear. Not when that something is you."

Your hand slips into his without thinking.

"I'm not good at letting people in," he continues. "I thought it was always easier to keep everything surface-level. Just jokes and smiles... meaningless flirting." His jaw tightens. "But with you I didn't want that. I wanted more. I wanted you, all of you."

He stills for a second as you rub small circles into his hand. His fingers curl around yours, holding your hand tighter.

"And that scared me. That someone was capable of hurting me, of absolutely destroying me." He laughs bitterly. "And while I was caught up in my own selfish worries, I ended up hurting you in every way I feared."

You both shift closer, your knees brushing against each other.

"I'm tired of pretending like you're not the center of my entire world," he admits, heavy and lingering in the air.

The moonlight spills over his face, softening his features. His eyes flick down to your lips, then back up. He closes the space. The first brush of his lips against yours is gentle—almost hesitant. Like he's giving you time to change your mind.

You kiss him back, and something shifts instantly. His free hand slides to your waist, pulling you closer as if he's afraid you might slip away. Your fingers move into his hair, and he exhales softly against your mouth, his breath warm against your skin.

The kiss deepens, slow and deliberate, each movement lingering as if neither of you wants it to end. His hand cups your jaw, tilting your chin up, and his tongue slides against yours in a tentative, searching rhythm. Every brush of lips, every press of skin, carries the weight of unspoken words, letting your emotions spill freely.

Your chest presses against his as he leans over you on the blanket, hovering just above. His lips trace a path down to your neck, teasing, sucking, and leaving gentle, lingering bites.

A low, breathless sound escapes you—something you didn’t even realize you could make—and you pull him back up toward you, crashing your lips against his again. Your hands tangle in his hair, fingers gripping and tugging gently, while his hands creep to the hem of your shirt, teasing the skin beneath as the world around you disappears.

As his hand slides beneath your shirt, you feel the heat of his palm pressing flat against your stomach. He pulls back from the kiss just enough to look at you, chest rising and falling with slow breaths. In his eyes, you catch something different—raw, unguarded, an intensity you’ve never seen before—something that leaves your own heart skipping a beat.

“We… we should stop,” he says, his voice low and strained, each word laced with effort to hold back what he clearly wants.

You smirk mischievously. "Why is there a problem?"

"Don't test me," his voice comes out hoarse and rugged.

"Scary." You laugh and press your lips against his, wrapping your arms around his neck as you sit up.

His arms wrap around your waist, tightening slightly as you pull him closer.

He buries his face in the crook of your neck for a moment, inhaling, his chest rising and falling against yours. He pulls back to look at you, his eyes searching for yours in the dark.

"Do you have any idea what you do to me?" he murmurs, his voice barely above a whisper, rough with emotion.

A shy smile tugs at the corner of your lips. "Probably a little too much," you laugh softly.

He shakes his head at your answer. "I'm serious. Every time I look at you, it's like nothing else matters anymore." He swallows. "And when I'm with you... it's a feeling I've never felt before."

You lean into him, your head resting against his chest. "No, I get it. You make me feel that way too."

You can hear the shock in his voice. "You're just saying that."

"Promise."

He holds out his pinky finger. "Prove it."

You can't help but laugh at his antics, but you lace your pinky with his. "Believe me now?"

He smiles, showing his full smile, and you feel your entire body set on fire.

"Yes," he says, content with himself.

"You're ridiculous." You roll your eyes playfully at him.

He laughs softly, the sound warm against the quiet night, before his expression turns tender and serious. “I hope you know… from now on, you’re mine,” he murmurs, his voice low and full of promise.

“Only yours,” you murmur back, like a vow.
