Chapter Text

Chapter One

You couldn’t help but stop and stare at the main gates leading into U.A. It’s highest ranking hero training academy in the world. Your stomach was tying itself into knots. For years, you have dreamed of this moment. You couldn’t count the hours of studying and training you put yourself through to be here. The amount you’ve already sacrificed just to have this chance. Other students are walking past you while you’re lost in your thoughts. Suddenly you feel a slight tug on your arm, causing you to jump and shake your head, snapping you out of your thoughts. When you look over, you see it’s your best friend from middle school, Ochaco Uraraka. You realize too late she’s been speaking to you this whole time.

“Hello! Earth to (Name)!” She says. “Come on! We need to get moving before we’re late!” She chirps.

“Yeah, you’re right. We can’t be late on our first day.” You respond quietly. You allow yourself to be tugged forward as she pulls you through the massive gates.

“I still can’t believe we both made it into the hero course!” Uraraka smiles and you can’t help but find it contagious. You feel better knowing at least one person from your class already.  “On top of that, we’re in the same class. I mean, there are only two of them so it was a decent chance, right?”

You chuckle to yourself, more to try and settle your nerves than anything else. “I’m really glad we are. After all, who else can put up with my broken Japanese and bad jokes?”

That comment caused Uraraka to snort. “Well you’ve certainly gotten better than three years ago. Though I’d be lying if I said your English hasn’t helped me out too.” With that you both continue to walk in silence until you reach the classroom doors.

They were massive! Who needs to go through doors that big!? You didn’t have too much time to ponder that, though. Behind those doors you can already hear your other classmates. Was that yelling you think to yourself as Uraraka pushes open the doors. You follow behind her and see the other students.

The first ones that catch your attention are the source of the noise you heard. There’s a male student with dark hair and glasses standing and demanding that another male take his legs off his desk this instant. You can hear him saying something about disrespecting school property, making strange chopping motions with one of his arms. His body is blocking your view of the other male; you could still hear his response, telling the scolding one to piss off.

At your entrance, the scolding one turns around. You can only describe the way he walks over to you as marching. When he reaches you he sticks his hand out in that strange chopping motion again. “Hello! My name is Iida Tenya! I am from Somei Private Academy! We will be classmates from now on! So I can only hope we will work together well!” He proclaims.

Uraraka spoke before you could, “Oh! I remember you! We were in the same testing area together! My name is Ochaco Uraraka and this is (Full Name). We’re both from the same middle school.” You were stopped from responding again by another student entering the room. He was obviously just as nervous as you were in fact you could hear him muttering away. He was plain looking with curly green hair, green eyes, and tons of freckles. Tenya begins talking to him about his performance during the entrance exam. You overhear the boy introduce himself as Izuku Midoriya, but he’s overridden by Tenya’s voice. Seeing your chance to slip away you wave shyly at Tenya and scurry off with Uraraka to find a seat.

At that point you finally see the loud male that Tenya had been scolding. He still has his feet on his desk with his hands in his pockets and was glaring at Midoriya. You notice his ashen blond hair, it’s spiky like someone had ruffled it and then just left it alone. That’s not what really catches your attention though. It’s his eyes. They’re a crimson red and full of anger, like one word could set him off.

They certainly seem to fit his personality you think to yourself. As you walk by him, his glare turned to you and you can’t help but gasp. Your steps falter as the full force of his hatred seems to fall on you. All you can see are the red of his irises burning into your own. You then notice your ribs are burning, right where your soul words are. What the hell is going on? Why can’t I look away?

When you don’t break eye contact with him, you see him smirk. He opens his mouth as if he’s going to yell at you, but then he forgets about you and returns his glare to Midoriya as he walks closer. You guess he managed to finally escape from Tenya.  “HEY, YOU DAMN NERD!” the loud one yells. “You better not get in my way you got that?! I’m going to be the number one hero dammit! So stay out of my way, Deku! How the fuck did a quirkless nobody like you make it in anyways, huh?!” You flinch and find yourself getting angry over his choice of words. Quirkless... why the hell did people have to throw that word around?

You glance over your shoulder to see Midoriya shaking nervously. “Kacchan, you really shouldn’t be yelling...” he squeaks out. The loud one doesn’t even bother to look at him again, seeming to choose to ignore him. You shake your head and find a seat next to Uraraka and a girl with auxiliary cables coming from her earlobes, who introduces herself as Kyoka Jiro.

The door opened again and a man wrapped in a yellow sleeping bag rolled in.  What the...? Who is that? He looks like a lumpy caterpillar.

“Everyone get in your seats.” The caterpillar man says. As he unzipped his sleeping bag and steps out, he keeps speaking. He has a strange looking scarf around his neck along with black clothing and shaggy black hair. His eyes are bloodshot and frankly, he looks exhausted. “It took you eight seconds to quiet down. That’s eight seconds too long. My name is Shota Aizawa, and I will be your homeroom teacher.”

You notice he’s now pulling uniforms out of the bag.  How’d he fit all those in there?

“Now everyone go change into your PT gear and meet me outside.” With that he turns around and leaves the room again. You hear murmurs from the other students as everyone gets up and heads to change. PT gear? Why? Won’t we miss the entrance ceremony?

You all make it outside after changing with no issues. Mr. Aizawa has announced that he will be conducting a quirk assessment test. The one who places last will be immediately expelled. More murmurs from your classmates except for Midoriya. He seems to be on the verge of tears while muttering something about controlling his quirk. You walk over and ask him if everything’s okay.

“What? Oh, yeah. Hehe, I guess I’m worried is all!” He says nervously. “I’m Izuku Midoriya by the way. I didn’t get your name earlier with Kacchan yelling…” He trails off as you both feel the loud one glare at the mention of his name. You ignore the feeling of his eyes as well as the burning of your soul words.

“My name is (Full Name). I went to middle school with Ochaco.” You extend your hand to shake his. “This may seem like an odd question but, can I call you by your first name? I’m from the US and honestly, I’m more comfortable with that. It’s okay if you aren’t though. I know Japan’s culture is different.”

At your words. he seems to flush a deep red. “Oh! Sure you can! If you’ll be more comfortable calling me Izuku, I’m fine with it.”

You heard a loud explosion and someone yelling, "Die!" that causes your ears to ring. You look over in time to see the loud one reeling back from throwing a ball. The ball itself looked worse for wear before it hurdled out of sight. Mr. Aizawa holds up a device that shows he threw it 705.2 meters. “This is the first rational step to finding out what kind of heroes you’ll be. Now everyone line up. The first event will be a 50 meter dash.”

The other students begin their turns. Some getting times as low as 4 seconds. You note that Tenya seems especially well equipped for speed seeing as he has engines in his calves. Uraraka lightens her clothing with her zero gravity quirk. She skims some time off of her middle school record. The loud one uses his explosions from his hands to propel himself along. As your turn comes, you begin strategizing how to best use your quirk. You feel the familiar twinge as you begin to materialize your chain from right above your ankle. It slinks along, rattling slightly, still intangible to everything else. The end of the chain has three points that come together like a hand with a blade that can come out from the center. You take your position and wrap your chain around your waist. As the gun goes off you sprint. At your will, the chain shoots forward to your maximum length of 50 feet, you use the end to grab onto a post that’s slightly off to the side and above the finish line. Then retracting your chain you pull yourself to the end, getting a final time of 5.2 seconds. Not bad. That’s faster than my middle school time at least.

As you dissolve your chain Izuku comes running up to you. “Wow (Name)! That was amazing! Your quirk looks so versatile!” He’s practically bouncing while speaking to you. “Will you let me take notes on it later?” He asks.

“Uh, sure, I guess.” You reply, “Don’t expect me to give away all my secrets though.” You joke and put your hand behind your head.  As you turn around you notice the loud one glaring at Izuku again. “Hey, Izuku, what is the loud one's problem with you?” As you ask Izuku seems to come to out of his muttering about your quirk.

“Oh? You mean Kacchan? He and I grew up together. He's always angry about something. Usually it involves me in some way or another.” Izuku seems to deflate a bit at that.

“Ah huh... so... what is his name so I can stop calling him “the loud one” then?” You catch his glare again and your ribs burn. This time you’re ready for it though. As you level your own glare at him he scowls. So you scowl right back. You know a bully when you see one, and you won't have any of that. Not again.

You hear Izuku’s response, “His actual name is Katsuki Bakugo. I've called him Kacchan since we were kids. He calls me... something else though.” You hear the dejection in Izuku’s voice, so you decide not to push him. Though you remembered hearing Bakugo saying, “Deku!” earlier in the classroom. You make a mental note to ask Uraraka about that. You’re not familiar with the word.

“Well, okay then. I may still call him 'the loud one', though. It seems pretty accurate.” You turn your back on Bakugo, breaking the stare-down. “Come on, Izuku. Let’s find Ochaco and move on.”

Over the course of the trials you are able to only use the one chain. I can’t give away all my secrets now can I?   You start taking mental notes on the others.

You notice a wide range of quirks from the class. From the electric one, Denki Kaminari, to another who can harden his skin, Eijiro Kirishima.  Izuku’s seems... dangerous though. He broke his own finger just throwing the ball. By the end of the trials, and the drama that came with them, you place 6th overall. That’s not a bad starting point.  You notice Bakugo ranked first and you’re not surprised. Thankfully, Mr. Aizawa announces no one is getting expelled and it was a logical ruse to make you perform your best. As you look over at Izuku, you’re worried he may faint. After all, he did score last. “Alright everyone, that’s all for today. Go home and be ready to work tomorrow.”

With that, Mr. Aizawa dismisses you for the day. Izuku went off to the nurse’s office to have Recovery Girl fix his finger. You find Uraraka and she links her arm with yours as you walk back to the classroom. You glance over your shoulder to catch Bakugo staring at you again. After the scene he made when Izuku threw the ball, you really don’t know what to make of him. He had been yelling, called Izuku Quirkless, and then tried to attack him. Luckily, Mr. Aizawa stopped him in time using a combination of his scarf and his Eraser Quirk. Bakugo glares fiercely at you when you catch his eye. You just roll your eyes in response, which seems to piss him off more. As you turn back around, Uraraka is chatting happily next to you. As you walk, you can still feel Bakugo’s eyes drilling into the back of your head.

Well, this will certainly be an interesting year.
