the present and the past: a study in control

Work Text:

the past

Be good.

Lan Wangji rubbed at his chest. It felt weird - tight, heavy. It was like a peach pit if the pit weighed a hundred pounds and wanted to crush his lungs. He breathed in. Took deep heavy breaths, just in and out like his uncle taught him - like his brother did every morning. He breathed through the heaviness, hand rubbing hard circles around his heart.

Be good.

He exhaled.

Be good.

Inhaled.

Be go-

“Lan Zhan,” said in a too intimate voice, so close to his ear he could feel the vibrations in the air.

There was only one person in the entire school who would dare do this to him. A flighty slip of a thing who bounced off walls like a rubber ball coated with sugar and spice and everything nice. Even now, as the wind blew past them, the scent of Wei Wuxian was sweet, light on the tongue but lingering.

“Aren’t you going to say hi back?” Wei Wuxian demanded, nudging Lan Wangji aside so he could sit down as humanly close to Lan Wangji as possible.

“You never said hi,” Lan Wangji pointed out while he let Wei Wuxian maneuvered them however he liked. Granted how Wei Wuxian liked to sit generally turned out to be how Lan Wangji liked to sit too. Perhaps a bit too close for most people’s comfort but - they were never going to be most people anyways. He could tell that much based on the cross look on the headmistress’ face whenever she saw them together.

Wei Wuxian sighed as he slumped against Lan Wangji, “Ah - I guess you’re right. Stop making so much sense at eight in the morning.”

Lan Wangji only hummed in response. A phantom itch in his fingers wanted him to card them through Wei Wuxian’s already tousled curls. He folded his hands together. It was simply safer that way.

Wei Wuxian peered down at Lan Wangji’s hands curiously. “Are you okay?” he asked with his head bumping against Lan Wangji’s shoulder.

Lan Wangji nodded.

“Alright.” Wei Wuxian turned that dark grey gaze of his elsewhere, his pale neck fully on display.

Lan Wangji never knew if it was intentional - how the other seemed to always be on display - neck, shoulders, wrists - and those delightfully dexterous fingers weaving through the air at the most inopportune times. His nails dug into his palms. Wei Wuxian continued with his school yard narration, slipping Lan Wangji tidbits of gossip he never wanted nor needed. It seemed to please Wei Wuxian regardless.

So Lan Wangji listened.

And kept his hands carefully folded in his lap.

the present

Lan Wangji’s regard is strong enough to warm him from within, like molasses on a bright summer day, slow and languorous.

His neck bares itself of its own volition. There is no thought, no conscious action on his part. He knows he wants and that is all he knows. He stretches his hand out, knowing without a doubt that someone will be there to take it.

Lan Wangji, as in all other areas, rises to the occasion admirably.

There is a soft, chaste kiss across his knuckles. Demure enough for a hall filled with friends and family. It makes him feel distinctly off kilter.

“Don’t,” his mouth forms, but the words don’t finish before Lan Wangji is there to seal them shut.

He sighs into the kiss, firm and warm and all too much like the other things Lan Wangji embodied. Still, he cannot find it in himself to complain, not when the way Lan Wangji bites at his lips and his neck and behind his ear is oh so nice.

“You should not,” Lan Wangji pauses over a particular spot of interest nestled within Wei Wuxian’s clavicle, his gold eyes tracking some unknown prey, and does not finish.

“Should not,” Wei Wuxian agrees despite the words Lan Wangji did not say.

He presses himself closer to the source of heat regardless. There are a million things he should not do. And a million more that he does. This is by far the safest thing he’s decided to do today.

Wei Wuxian molds them ever closer, spreading his legs and wrapping them around Lan Wangji, hips rocking a little in anticipation of what will be.

The line of tension running along Lan Wangji’s neck sends a thrill through him, all that control - all that power - settled in neatly within lines of muscle wrapped around bone wrapped around him. It’s intoxicating the way no wine ever was, ever could be.

He shifts, listing to the side as he tries to meld them together at the hips, feeling a pleasurable tingle at the base of his spine as he finds the angle he’d been looking for and rocks down. A soft inhale near his ear is the only sign Lan Wangji’s even slightly affected by his finding.

He would pout. Would whine and shake but that’s coming soon enough he’s willing to be patient. It’s dangerous, what they’re doing, what he’s doing - should not - be - an involuntary whine comes out of him when Lan Wangji bites down to muffle his own groans and Wei Wuxian’s thoughts shatter like glass on rock. The slick dripping down between his thighs is heavy enough it’s soaking his clothes - soaking Lan Wangji’s clothes and oh - how will he get home all wet - make him stay, the insidious voice in his head says.

The voice sounds enough like the shrill tones of well meaning matrons that he’s thrown out of the moment.

Lan Wangji, ever so disciplined, leans back the moment Wei Wuxian freezes and looks at Wei Wuxian questioningly, all too prepared to stop. Wei Wuxian sighs, back against the hardwood and heart racing too fast.

They really should not.

He leans in.
