Work Text:

SiZhui was unsure as he stood outside of his guardians’ home. Normally he knew to stay as far away as possible from this place until they emerged on their own, and he always recommended others do the same.

Though unfortunately some had had to learn by experience after not heeding his warning…

Today was a special case however, his seniors had asked him specifically to wake them as soon as news had arrived of any changes.

The wife of SiZhui’s cousin was due to have their first child on any day now.

Today, this night, was finally that time.

Wei Wuxian wanted to be one of the first to welcome his great nephew into the world.

SiZhui saw how his father… fathers longed for another chance, a chance to raise a child together.

Perhaps He thought, That is the reason they are so excited for news of the little one, why they want to meet them as soon as possible.

Tossing the thought aside for now, SiZhui knocked gingerly. It was out of formality alone. He knew the home was far too large for them to be roused only by this.

Dutifully, he pushed the door open. It let in with him a gust of early morning air.

Walking into the center of the open room, he could see his seniors still sleeping peacefully together.

“Bà- Bàba

Bàbaaaa”

A young child cried into the night, a very uncommon sound within the Cloud Recesses. The voice carried far. SuZhui knew that this child must have been awoken due to a terrible nightmare, any other time a young Lan who could speak would already know to hold their voice.

The sobs continued as SiZhui moved to the bed.

But before he was able to say a word, the pair sprang to life.

“A-Yuan!” Wei Ying’s eyes had snapped open. He made a valiant attempt to stand but instead tumbled onto the floor.

The junior watched this chaos, one father falling over himself and the other with sword already in hand.

“SiZhui!” Finally finding himself, Wei Wuxian quickly made his way over to his son, wrapping him in a tight embrace, “Are you alright?”

Of course he was.

“I’m fine.” The younger replied, glancing over his father’s shoulder to see Lan Zhan place his sword back in its sheath.

“You asked me to wake you if there was news.” SiZhui reminded.

Wei Ying pulled away, still keeping his hands placed on the youth’s shoulders, “And?!” He asked excitedly.

“The baby is coming right on time.” SiZhui smiled, sharing in the enthusiasm.

“Healthy?”

“So far they are both healthy.”

“Lan Zhan!” Wei Wuxian spoke his husband’s name, and the other was called to action immediately.

HanGuang-Jun, as graceful as ever, addressed his son, “Thank you, SiZhui.” Before joining his husband to prepare for their trip to Lanling.

SiZhui nodded, though he thought perhaps he should be the one to thank his seniors… his parents.

Yet again he had been reminded of how they cared about him, how they would do anything to protect him. He still, and would forever, feel safe as long as they were around.

“Thank you.”
