Work Text:
(The goodbye)
''How long are you going to be gone for?'' Haru asks, stuffing his hands inside his jacket, to hide his rising panic, as they're walking to Daisuke's car after work one evening. Daisuke doesn't answer right away, as if he wanted to avoid saying the answer altogether, but feeling Haru's penetrating gaze on his face, he sighs and says in a low voice: ''A month, give or take.''
Upon hearing this, Haru stops in his tracks, his eyebrows furrowing: ''...a month?.... A month?! THAT LONG?!'' Daisuke doesn't turn to Haru, and looks down at ground, feeling guilty for some odd reason.
''T-That...is...,'' Haru mumbles, and then grabs Daisuke's shoulder, turning him to face him: ''...why? where are you going? Are you once again running off to do something danger--...''
Daisuke shakes his head, ''No, but I have to take care of something related to Kambe group in Europe. It's not something dangerous, I promise, though it is too complicated to explain...''
Haru nods absent-mindedly, ''I...see. If you say it isn't dangerous, I'll believe you, but...'' Daisuke looks up, and his heart aches at the droopy expression on Haru's face.
He reaches forward, putting his arms around Haru, resting his head against his chest: ''...I know. I don't want to be apart from you for that long too. But I can't take you with me this time, though I want to.''
Haru looks up at the sky, his own hands now wrapped around Daisuke, pressing him closely as if he would slip away right that instant from him. He bends down, whispering in Daisuke's ear: ''Take care of yourself, eat your meals properly, and come back as soon as possible.'' Daisuke hmms his reply.
Haru lets go reluctantly, and then smiles widely in a teasing manner: ''Well, in that case, I'm going to crash at your place until you leave, to get my fill of Kambe Daisuke to get through a month without seeing you.''
Daisuke smiles a short smile and nods, thinking wasn't it him who was getting his fill of Katou Haru to last the month without seeing his bright smile and warm touch as well.
(Daisuke leaves)
(Week one) - (location: MCPTF office)
''How many has it been now?'' Kamei asks, whispering in Saeki's ear, as they both stare at Haru, staring at the files in front of him with a blank look, his eyes drooping, as if he hadn't slept in days.
''It was the sixth time in the span of five minutes,'' Saeki replies, both counting the too-frequent sighs Haru kept exhaling everyday since the day Daisuke left for his business trip.
''Do you think this has something to do with Kambe-san being gone?'' Kamei whispers, and Saeki nods in agreement. Haru sighs again, and they both look at each other, and then sigh in unison as well.
The phone rings on Kiyomizu's desk, and he picks up. After listening to the conversation, he nods and puts down the receiver. He stands up and walks to Haru's work station, and says: ''Katou-chan?'' But Haru doesn't look up, still staring at the files in front of him. Kiyomizu clears his throat again, and tries again, a bit loudly this time: ''KATOU-CHAN!''
Haru startles, as if waking up from a dream, and looks up, a hazy look on his face: ''Huh? Chief? W...What is it?''
''Katou-chan, are you feeling unwell for some reason? You look very tired...'' Kiyomizu, raising his hand and placing it under his chin, in curiosity. Haru startles again, and stands up, straightening his back: ''No, chief. I'm not. I just didn't sleep very well last night. Did you have some work for me?''
Kiyomizu stares at him for a moment longer and then sighs: ''Yes, I just received a call from Hoshino Ryou from first division, asking you to assist them on an old case from your days in the 1st division, saying how they just had a breakthrough in it at last...''
Haru looks at Kiyomizu, as if listening attentively and zoning out at the same time, and nods absent-mindedly. Kiyomizu's eyebrows furrow and he continues: ''Well...you can start right away, they're waiting for you on the fourth floor in the Strategy Room...''
Haru nods and turns around and says, ''Oi! Kambe, let's g---...'' then his eyes widen, and he clears his throat, and bows to Kiyomizu, and almost runs out of the office.
Kiyomizu looks at Daisuke's work station, and then looks at the slammed door of the office which Haru just ran out of in a hurry, and then sees Saeki and Kamei folding their arms, shaking their heads in sync, and sighing again in unison.
A small smile breaks out on his face, as if finally putting the pieces together. He starts humming and returns to his chair, and resumes his admiring of his ship in the bottle ornament.
(Week two) - (location - 1st division meeting room)
''Senpai,'' Hoshino says, holding a coffee can from the vending machine in his hand, and offering it to Haru, who was resting his head back on the sofa in the meeting room, staring at the ceiling and sighing.
Haru doesn't move but looks at Hoshino standing above him with a small smile, and then at the coffee can in his hand. Haru gives him a short smile and straightens, and thanks Hoshino while breaking the seal and then slowly taking a sip from the coffee can.
''I think we will get them soon enough,'' Haru says, staring at the coffee can in his hands, ''We know their hideout now, all you have to do---'' Hoshino interrupts him, ''Senpai, we're on a break right now. And your work is almost done. Leave the rest to us.''
Haru turns to look at Hoshino, and then nods slowly. Then as if something occurred to him, he looks at the ground and murmurs: ''If Kambe was here, we would have already got those guys.''
Hoshino looks sideways at Haru, and then out the windows that was next to them. ''Maybe, but we still got them, and it was very refreshing working with you like old times once again.''
Haru smiles, and takes another sip: ''You're right. When Kambe comes back, I'm going to brag about how we were able to catch such a big fish without all his fancy gadgets and superhero suits.''
Hoshino gives a short laugh, and then says: ''When is he getting back?''
Hearing this, Haru's face sombers, and then he whispers: ''I don't know. I can't get through his cell. All I know he is somewhere in Europe, probably speeding in his expensive car, and jumping from planes showing off in front of all those foreigners...'' His face turning from sad to annoyed in an instant.
Hoshino laughs out loud, standing up, looking at his watch: ''You really know him too well, I am sure he'll be back before you even realize it.'' Haru's face becomes somber again and he whispers: ''Yeah...if only.''
(Week three) (location - Haru's house)
In the last two weeks, Haru had realized one thing for certain: Kambe Daisuke had become such a big part of his daily life that it was almost unbearable - everything he did and everywhere he went had traces of him, filled with memories of them sometimes bickering, of them kissing in secret, of them holding hands, of them lying down with their bodies pressed together at night.
Haru missed Daisuke when he was eating cup noodles, or after making natto for breakfast and then laughing remembering his surprise expression when he ate it for the first time and said in an astonished tone how delicious it was, or when Haru was watching his favourite movie whilst drinking beer, to cheer up his mood, but getting depressed instead when he couldn't hold or kiss Daisuke for comfort when the emotional part of the movie came on.
Haru sighs a loud sigh, and lowers his head and rests them on his knees - finally giving in and saying aloud: ''You idiot, just how long are you taking?'' As he's staring at the door of his house from his living room, suddenly his house bell rings, but he doesn't get up to open the door.
He ignores it, hoping whoever it was goes away after realizing nobody was home, but the doorbells rings again. Haru's head lifts slightly in confusion, thinking who could be that persistent. As he's about to stand up, his phone rings, and Daisuke's name flashes on the screen, and his eyes go wide in shock.
After not being able to reach him for two weeks, he picks up the phone, his hands slightly trembling, and hears Daisuke's soft voice: "I'm here."
As soon as Haru hears those words, he rushes to the door and opens it, running out of breath, though the distance between his living room and the door wasn't that much.
Haru stares at him as if not believing what he was seeing, and Daisuke smiles his soft smile. They stare at each other, as if committing each other's faces to memory.
Daisuke decides to break the silence, removing his black glasses: "I came back early to surprise you, but it looks like you're-..." and before he finishes his sentence, Haru grabs his arm and pulls him inside the house and hugs him tightly.
Daisuke notices he was shaking a bit, raising his hand to pat Haru's back softly, and Haru just hugs him even tightly.
"What's this, Inspector Katou? I was only gone for a few weeks, did you really miss me that much?" Daisuke says, in a teasing voice. Haru says in a heartbeat: "Yes, more than I ever thought I would."
Daisuke's eyes widen, and then close, and he buries his face in Haru's shoulder. They stay like that, holding onto each other, for a while, until Daisuke says: "I'm hungry, what's for dinner?"
Haru laughs and pulls back, still holding onto Daisuke, his eyes red with unshed tears: "Whatever you want..."
Daisuke's heart thuds in his chest, seeing the happiness and longing on Haru's face, and then he says, "Really? Whatever I want?"
Haru nods, and then he leans forward to kiss Daisuke's forehead. Daisuke raises his hand and holds onto Haru's nape, bringing him down to his height, and kisses his lips: "in that case, the thing I want right now is you."
Haru groans against Daisuke's soft lips and starts kissing him harder, just like he had when they had their first kiss, all those years ago, in Daisuke's car.
Haru kisses Daisuke as if he was air and he was drowning, murmuring "I really missed you" again and again, against his mouth. As sounds of wet kisses and loud huffs fill the room of Haru's home, suddenly a growl comes from Daisuke's stomach and Haru pulls back, laughing a little: "So, you really meant it when you said you were hungry."
Daisuke starts blushing and looking sideways: "That wasn't me." Haru laughs and kisses Daisuke once more, and says, "You can go ahead and take a bath, I'll get our meals ready."
"Should I help-..." Daisuke says, but Haru pushes him towards the bathroom: "I know you want to show off your culinary skills whenever you get a chance, but today just leave it to me. I know you're already tired after a long journey..."
Daisuke sighs in disappointment, and Haru laughs. "Hurry up, or the food will get cold by the time you come out."
Daisuke nods and does as Haru suggested. After eating dinner, they watch Haru's favourite movie again. Daisuke sitting between Haru's legs, while leaning with his back on Haru's chest, both of them drinking imo jochu in tea cups.
Haru recalls how much he missed Daisuke before when he was watching the film on his own, and he bends down and kisses Daisuke's neck, making him shiver: "What is it?" Daisuke asks, looking back to see Haru's face.
Haru looks down, and murmurs: "Nothing...just, I really missed you."
Daisuke chuckles: "Just how many times are you going to say that?" Haru tightens his arm that was around Daisuke's abdomen, pulling him even tightly against him: "Infinite times wouldn't be enough."
Daisuke upon hearing this, leans back and tilts his head upwards to kiss Haru's chin: "I missed you too. I kept looking for your face in every crowd, and I missed you whenever I sat down to have a meal, and whenever I was driving anywhere and I'd look over to see the passenger seat and you weren't there, shouting at me to slow down, or whenever I saw the sun setting on the horizon, I really missed y-...." Haru grabs Daisuke's face with his hand that wasn't holding onto the tea cup, and crushes their lips together, his tongue invading Daisuke's mouth with desperation, making him gasp a little.
Haru's puts his tea cup on the table, all the while kissing Daisuke, and Daisuke does the same, turning around to put his arms around Haru's neck, his legs on each side of Haru, kissing him harder and harder in return - both of their longing and happiness mixing with each other.
Haru removes Daisuke's hoodie over his head, and bends down to kiss his neck, his Adam's apple, his collarbones, biting and licking his way down to his torso. Daisuke's breathing gets heavier, and Haru grabs his waist and lays him down on the bed.
Haru's hands travel down Daisuke's bare body, touching every inch of his skin, and then he says while kissing his inner thighs: "I missed the fragrance of your skin, Daisuke,"
Daisuke looks down at him, his face flushing seeing Haru looking at him with an intense stare from below, his desire flashing like headlights in the dark of the room.
The night went by in the blink of an eye, as Haru and Daisuke became an entangled mess, as if they were never willing to be apart for even a millimetre for the rest of their lives.
