Work Text:
“Come on, Iida, stop being stupid.” Iida thought to himself, peeling his eyes away from Deku, who was in no way trying to finish the assignment Aizawa gave the class. He has to focus! Take his eyes away from Deku’s gorgeous green eyes, and soft hands that always felt like heaven when they brushed over him, and his soft, almost silk-like hair, GOD his hair looked soft. He’s doing it again. Getting lost in his classmates' features. But how could he not? Every time he was focused, Deku would mutter his thoughts out loud to himself, and when he was happy, his smile grew wider and wider than usual, and he had lips that looked softer than anything he had see— Stop doing this,Iida! Stop! Stop it! You insolent and incompetent dumbass! Focus! Stop!
He was at risk of losing his straight A’s! Because of his stupid crush! Deku had been distracting Iida for months on end, and his grades had suffered. He had an A- in a class, an A-! He was almost failing! That should be enough to get him through the day. It usually did, considering any small threat to his grades sent Iida spiraling, but he couldn’t distract himself from this—This stupid puppy love.
Iida had pulled himself through the rest of the day, most of it going pretty much the same (as in Iida zoning out and either thinking of Deku or simply staring at the boy whenever he could). He had managed to get through his classes, but another task waited for him. One significantly harder, and much much more difficult. One of his most taxing missions yet, one that required precision and skill.
He had to study. Alone. With Deku. The boy couldn't get off his mind. This would quite literally be hell. Ochaco had cancelled her plans for their study session, which was very VERY bad for Iida. If he couldn’t focus in class because of Deku, how could he tutor Deku yet still get distracted by Deku?
That’s it! He’d just not get distracted by Deku! Easy! He would push it down as far as he could and never acknowledge it ever again! For as long as he can! Possibly the rest of his life!
Flawless plan.

Why did Iida think that would work?
“Iida,” Deku whined, looking up at the boy, “I can’t do this.” He frowned, which almost made Iida’s inhibitions pack up and leave. Looking away from the green-haired man, Iida turned to look down at his assignment. It was pretty easy, Iida assumed, considering most of the class finished it by the end of class (except Kirishima, of course, who was famous for his stupidity.)
“Well…” Iida started, glancing up at Deku for a moment. Instead of looking down at the assignment, Midoriya’s eyes were fixated heavily on Iidas, and instantly he shut up. He could feel Deku staring, and it made Iidas feel a foreign heat on the tips of his ears. Was he… blushing? He had never done that before. Not even when Ochaco called him handsome! Which is quite the compliment, by the way.
“You were saying?” Deku asked, trying to finish Iida’s thoughts for him. His face had gotten a lot closer than it had been, and Iida almost exclaimed out in a panic. Instantly, Iida looked back down at his paper, and he could hear a huff escape Deku’s lips.
“Uhm.” Iida started, but he had last his train of thought. He was too busy thinking about Deku’s adorable nose, and how when his hero complex got the best of him, he’d get super bouncy and make lengthy speeches that made no apparent narrative sense and only existed to drive the plot forward in melodramatic ways.
“...Iida?” Deku asked, leaning close to Iida. He could almost feel the green hair he so desperately wanted to run his hands through. They met eyes, and Iida felt an unmistakable urge to run away and hide for a year or two. Whichever could stop the spread of this embarrassing and frankly unnecessary blush. He couldn’t help it! He could feel the heat spread to his cheeks, and a sheepish smile came over Deku’s face.
“Sorry! I have been uhm, wanting to say, that… you weren’t paying attention in class!” Iida blurted out, gathering his words in his, frankly, amazingly eloquent speech.
“Oh! Sorry,” Deku replied, looking down at his feet, “Well… I’ve been wanting some alone time with you. I feel like you’ve been avoiding me lately.” He explained, and if Iida looked down at Deku, he was sure to see his guilty expression. Although, he restrained himself from seeing Deku’s face. If he did end up glimpsing over, he’d think about all of the things he loved about the boy, and if you hadn’t realized already, that’s probably Iida’s downfall.
“I don’t know where you got that from!” Iida explained, trying to get his words out before he ended up stammering again. “I have not been avoiding you, but we should finish our paper.” He politely yet bluntly explained.
“Oh, well… I was thinking we could… just hang out?” Deku suggested. Iida looked towards him, and the green haired, green eyed, adorably freckled boy had put on a mischievous smile, one that made Iida reevaluate if his plan really would work.
Nonsense! Of course it would work, it had worked up until now! (That wasn't true, he could barely form a coherent sentence while asking to enter Deku’s room.) He would just have to stick it out, that’s it! Watch the clock pass as his… amazing, perfect, gorgeous classmate sat there and… hung out, as he put it.
“Iida! It would be so easy to make a move on him!” His conscience yelled at him, “I know you’ve never flirted before, and as your previous partner said, you aren’t… the best kisser. But that doesn’t matter now! It’s just you and Deku, baby, what’s stopping you?”
That was a good point. Iida into the eyes of the boy that literally made him rethink his sexuality, and their eyes met, again. Deku started to lean in, but after a moment, Iida naively looked away. “Dont be stupid, Iida, you know he doesn’t like you. He probably doesn’t even like men! Okay, that was a stretch, he is, admittedly, the epitome of the word twink, but still! He thought to himself.
Deku’s eyes went wide, and he looked down at his hands, which were fiddling in his lap. He blinked a few times, and then a frown came to his face. Iida couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but he could imagine it was along the lines of Ewwwwwwwwww kissing Iida, my classmate and our schools honorable class rep? Disgusting! followed by four hours of throwing up at the mere thought of them kissing.
An awkward silence appeared, and despite being only a few inches away from each other, the boys felt like there was miles of space between them. Iida looked back down at Deku’s paper, which had little to no writing on it, just a poorly drawn head with a bunch of hearts around it. It had glasses and an abnormally thick neck that didn’t really fit the art style of the show (it looks like a fucking watermelon, dude), as well as hair that looked suspiciously like— Wait, was that him? How could he not notice before? This was him! On Deku’s paper! It was a spot on drawing, wow, wonder what it means? Hm… Iida thought to himself.
“Midoriya, I didn’t know you were an artist.” Iida mentioned, pointing at the head. Deku exclaimed out in panic, snatching up the paper before Iida could make a second thought. He must’ve used his quirk, there was no way he could’ve snatched the paper up that quickly without it.
“I’m not!” Deku blubbered, an unmistakable blush coming to his cheeks. He closed his eyes tightly, as if he was afraid that if he opened them, Iida would be disgusted.
“Well why not? This looks like me, even down to the neck.” Iida attested, and Deku peeked open an eye. Seeing that he wasn’t appalled that Deku had drawn him with a suspicious amount of hearts around his head, he took on an expression of concern.
“Well… I mean, do you like it?” Deku asked, leaning closer to Iida.
“Of course I do! It looks exactly like me! I don't know the function of these hearts, but they’re a nice addition.” Iida explained, completely blocking out Deku’s now flirtatious expression from his peripheral vision.
“I mean, you’re very handsome, so I thought that was a very nice touch.” Deku remarked, which made Iida nod.
“Ochaco called me handsome one time, so that is factual, yes.”
“And you have mesmerizing eyes.”
Iida turned to look at Deku, who was now centimeters away from the boy. “Well, I’ve never heard that one, but thank you!” Deku seemed to get fed up, and started to lean in more.
Turning his head back to the drawing, thoughts rushed through the taller boy's mind. Mostly just memories of Deku laughing or that one time Iida dreamed of his crush in a maid dress (he woke up almost instantly because he most likely would’ve had a stroke. Much to his dismay, Deku in a maid dress was nowhere to be seen again).
Deku huffed again, but before Iida could go back to making nonsensical explanations of the assignment he had completely ignored in class, Deku started to do that cute little mutter he always did.
“I’m giving him all the signs, and he’s definitely intelligent enough,” Deku whispered to himself, yet Iida could pick it up easily. He scratched his head in confusion, and then noticed Iida staring at him. “Aw, man, was I doing it again?” He asked, a tint of pink coming to his freckled cheeks.
Iida nodded, and then turned back to the paper. “It’s just-“ He started up again, “I really like you! An—and if you don’t, could you please just tell me?!” Deku asked, and Iida stumbled for words. What's this, an inevitable confession because this is a one shot written about the two characters featured?! But before he could find words to describe the now elation he felt in his chest, Deku continued.
“You have been staring at me constantly and Ochaco has noticed whenever you talk about me you get this stupid little smile that I bet looks so cute but the one time I try and give off signals you try and push me away?! What’s going on, do you like me or not?!” He asked, but Iida had sat there completely stunned.
“How do I say this nicely…” Iida asked himself, and Deku’s spirits looked crushed. Iida put his finger to his chin as his thoughts collected, and with every passing moment, Deku looked more and more hurt.
“I think you are very attractive, and you have been on my mind for a few months, yes. Now… I don’t think it can be classified as a crush, per say, because the definition of crush classifies it as temporary and or short lived and from what it SOUNDS like is that I am very in love wi-“
Two arms reached out to hug the boy, not waiting for Iida’s consent. Pulling him close, Deku buried his face in Iida’s shoulder. A sniffling sound escaped from the crook of Iida’s shoulder, and Iida realized that he was crying.
“Did I upset you..?” Iida asked, and Deku brought his head up, shaking his head. God he was so cute when he shook his head like that. His hair would shake around and it made Iida’s heart flutter.
“No, not at all,” Deku sniffled, wiping away his years, “Sometimes-sometimes i just get emotional and I don’t know Ochaco has been making this sound like a big deal and it just felt like it wasn’t true so I felt a little bit subconscious.” He rambled, making Iida frown.
“So, what you’re saying is, you like me?” Iida deducted, and after seeing Deku nod, Iida felt an uncharacteristically large smile coming to his face, pink spreading on his cheeks. Deku laughed at the sight, and reached out to hold Iida’s hand, a smile appearing on his own lips, that same blush coming to his face.
His hands were so soft.
“Can I kiss you?” Deku asked, and Iida’s eyes went wide. Oh my god it’s happening it’s happening oh my god, he thought to himself, and he tried his best to remain composed. “Sorry, I just… want to ask for consent I don’t wanna rush you into anything, y’know?” He added on in a rush.
“Of course you can.” Iida responded, and their lips met. A moment of pure bliss passed between them, Iida’s eyes closed. His mind went blank, except for one thought.
His lips were unbelievably soft.
Pulling away, Iida opened his eyes, and Deku soon opened his. An elated grin came to the green haired, freckled, ethereal boy in front of him.
A dreamy giggle escaped both of their mouths, and soon they were laughing together, their bodies closer than ever. His laugh sounded like angels singing, and Iida felt his chest flutter. He had never been this passionate about someone, and he couldn’t believe he actually got a chance to share moments like this with Deku. After they calmed down, they met eyes again, a stray giggle leaving Deku yet again, making Iida giggle himself.
His eyes were gorgeous.
They kissed again, and then again, and each time they kissed, Iida continued to feel that childlike burst of joy erupt in his chest, one that made him feel giggly and stupid and star struck. After a few dozen more kisses, both boys gave up trying to figure out how to keep Deku passing, instead resorting to sitting together in stunned silence.
“So… did you notice that I wasn’t paying attention in class?” Deku asked, his voice a gentle coo that made Iida smile.
“I think I mentioned that before,” Iida responded, glancing over at the paper, “Uhm, forgive me for asking, but was that genuine?”
“If I’m being honest, no. Me and Ochaco have kinda been planning this for… Weeks.” Deku admitted.
“Seriously? Even Ochaco knew?”
“Yeah,” He giggled, “I’m pretty sure everyone knew. Even Kirishima brought it up, and… y’know, it’s Kirishima, so…” They laughed.
“So... are we a couple now?” Iida asked after their laughter died down.
“Do you want to be a couple now?” Deku asked, looking up at Iida.
“I don’t know… It couldn’t hurt, but I don’t know if I’m ready for everyone to know. I’m sorry.” Iida explained, his voice becoming meek.
“No no! It’s okay!” Deku assured, putting a hand on Iida’s cheek, his thumb stroking his cheekbone.
That same wide smile grew back on his face, and they kissed again. Iida reached up to run his hands through Deku’s hair, and Iida vowed that he’d never get tired of this. The novelty hasn’t worn off, and he didn’t predict it ever would.
His hair was so soft.
