Dany's Back in Town

Summary:

Every summer Dany visited her brother's family in the North and that's how she and Jon first became best friends. Until something happened one night in their sixteenth year that changed everything, shattering their unbreakable bond. Now, three years later, Dany's back in town. Jon tells himself they've both moved on, but can one truly get over their first love?

Chapter 1: Fall Again

Notes:

Hi Everyone,

After being a huge fan of Jonerys I finally decided to write my first story. It was supposed to be a one shot between 3k-5k words, but somehow it just kept going and going and now here we are.

It has been a labor of love and I've already written the first 16 chapters because I wanted to make sure I was able to write a story that I was proud of before posting.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I'd love to hear what you think.

P.S. I just wanted to thank all the writers who've contributed to this fandom. I've enjoyed your work so much and not only have you provided me with endless entertainment, but you've restored my love for Jonerys after my heart broke in 2019. So don't ever think your writing doesn't impact anyone. It does. My favorite writers know who they are. Much love to you ladies.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The automatic doors slid open and a rush of cool air blasted Jon in the face.

Everywhere he looked were throngs of people pushing past each other. Businessmen strode by families hugging one another, oblivious to the traffic jam they caused in their euphoria of being reunited. Single travelers glued to their phone screens slowly pulled luggage behind them while children screamed and ran ahead, their travel weary parents struggling to keep up.

He looked at the monitor indicating which carousel would hold the luggage of flight 212, non-stop from Kings Landing. “Looks like it’s going to be number seven.”

Lyanna Stark smiled. Her eyes, so like her son’s, sparkled in the overly bright lights of the terminal as they made their way through the crowd.

“I’m so happy Dany is joining us for the summer. When Rhaella told me she wasn’t going with her friend to Essos, I just knew we had to invite her. It took a bit of cajoling, but I was able to get her to come.” She clasped hands with Jon’s father, Rhaegar. “It helps that you’re her favorite brother. It wasn’t a hard sell, though I had to assure her Mr. Broody wouldn’t mind sharing his parents during his last summer before school in the fall.”

Rhaegar raised their clasped hands and lightly kissed her knuckles. “Since I already have to share you with Jon, I suppose it won’t make a difference if Dany is here as well." He lowered his voice an octave. “But make no mistake, I’m very much looking forward to getting you all to myself in two months.”

Groaning at his father’s innuendo, Jon twisted his face in disgust as his parents snickered.

“Lya, love, did our boy not inherit anything from me? He has your looks and Ned’s unbending personality,” Rhaegar jested.

She took in Jon’s glower. “I don’t know…he certainly gets his moods from you. Don’t worry, love, I’m sure our boy has your passionate dragon blood too. It’s laying dormant, just waiting for a reason to sing.”

The rebuttal on the tip of Jon's tongue was cut off by a shout from the crowd.

“Rhaegar! Rhaegar, over here!”

Jon turned, his eyes zooming in on the figure in the middle of the throng shining like a desert mirage. The noise of the travelers dimmed, the people rushing past all slowed to a crawl and he felt rooted to the spot, unable to move a muscle in fear of the image disappearing before his very eyes.

Her long, silver-blonde locks fell in cascading waves down her back, and her cutoff shorts hugged like a second skin, showing off lean, toned legs. The red tank top clung to her in a way that showed off her very curvy, very feminine form, but it was her face that drew him in, a design of Valyrian perfection.

He last saw her three years ago and she'd been on the cusp of womanhood then. Their only connection since had been following each other on social media. It was shallow and abysmal at best. Now, however, he wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of seeing the glorious Daenerys Targaryen live in the flesh. She was even more radiant than he remembered.

In the next moment, she was scooped up by a jubilant Rhaegar and lifted off her feet. Dany giggled as he pressed a kiss to her hair. “I've missed you, little sister!”

Dany beamed, smiling so wide it showed off her gleaming white teeth.

“Ok, my turn,” Lyanna cut in. “I need to hug my girl too.” She wrapped Dany in her arms as soon as she was placed back on her feet. “We’ve missed you so much, sweetling! We’re excited you decided to come after all. It’ll be just like old times.”

As they got reacquainted, Jon pulled out of his stupor and made his way toward the trio to stand behind Dany. When Lyanna finally released her, she slowly turned toward him, lifting that perfect face to pierce his dark gaze with her own.

Dany eyes skimmed from the bottom of his shoes to the top of his unruly black curls. There was something that flashed in them, so quickly he almost didn’t notice it before she offered a shy smile, one small dimple appearing on her cheek.

“Hi, Jon.” It was said barely above a whisper.

He opened his mouth but had to quickly swallow several times past the lump in his throat. “Dany.” His voice came out deeper than he meant it to, taking him by surprise so he cleared his throat. “You look great. I mean, good—um...you look well...”

Cringing internally, he averted his eyes. What the hell was wrong with him? He felt like his brain cells were slowly dying in her presence.

If she sensed his discomfort, she didn’t show it. Grinning widely now, Dany pushed past any reservations and wrapped her arms around him. “Jon Snow, ever the poet.”

That was her special name for him. When they were eight, his family visited King’s Landing for a week and she made up a game called Secret Agent Hero, insisting that if they were spies they shouldn’t use their real names. After throwing around ideas, she dubbed him Jon Snow because he was from the north and loved the cold.

In turn, he came up with Stormborn for her because his grandmother said the night of her birth, a mighty storm had blown through the city, knocking out power lines and causing severe damage to the entire region. They weren't kids anymore, but somehow Jon Snow and Stormborn stuck through the years.

He tensed for a split second, then relaxed and hugged her back. She fit snugly in his arm as he engulfed her petite body. He squeezed his eyes shut, willing his body not to react, not to notice the way her breasts pushed into his chest. He tried not to take a whiff of her intoxicating scent, a heady combination of hot spice and sweet ocean breeze.

“I've missed you so much,” she murmured into his ear, still holding him tightly. “I hope you’ve missed me too.”

“I have. Summer just isn’t the same without you here.”

They pulled back and he reluctantly let go, taking a step away. He needed the space to breathe as he felt enflamed being so close to her.

“Shall we grab your bags?” Rhaegar asked.

“Yes, let’s get your stuff, then we can go home and relax for the evening.” Lyanna ushered them toward the carousel. “I’m sure you’re tired after that long flight.”

They picked up her bags and made their way outside. Lyanna walked arm in arm with Dany, chattering about girly stuff while he and his father trailed behind them. Rhaegar pulled two rolling suitcases and Jon slung a large duffel over his shoulder and held her carry-on bag.

As he watched Dany’s hips sway, her tight denim shorts hugging her sweet little bottom, he brooded silently and worried how he was going to get through the next six weeks of his life.

Dinner that evening was a lighthearted affair, with everyone catching up and laughing while reminiscing about past summers. Lyanna had made all of Dany’s favorites and afterward, she and Jon helped clean up the kitchen, bickering playfully back and forth like they used to do. By the time they finished, it was past ten so she excused herself and headed to her room.

The first thing she did was enjoy a long, hot shower to wash the day away. When finished, she wrapped herself in a towel and used another one to twist her hair on top of her head. Rifling through her toiletry bag, she pulled out her jars and bottles to line along the countertop. She didn’t mind sharing a bathroom with Jon, having done so in summers past when she visited.

It was convenient for those late nights when they were supposed to be in bed, to sneak into each other's room through the connecting bathroom without the adults knowing. More often than not, she did the sneaking since he had a TV in his room. They’d lie in his bed watching mindless shows on closed captioning so that Rhae and Lyanna wouldn’t hear from their bedroom downstairs.

She was pleased to see he still clung to his neat, organized ways. If she had to share a bathroom with a guy, at least he didn’t leave dirty towels on the floor or shaving cream all over the sink.

Finished with putting her stuff away, she pulled the towel off her head and reached for her lotion. With one leg lifted onto the edge of the tub, she had just started to rub it on when the door on the other side of the bathroom swung open.

“Shit!” Jumping back as if he’d been struck, Jon raked a hand down his face, his eyes roaming anywhere other than on her. “I swear I didn’t know you were in here.”

He had nothing on but grey sweatpants pulled low on his hips and a towel slung over one shoulder. Her eyes drew to his muscular chest, watching as it rose and fell with deep breaths. He looked delectable and a heat filled her that had nothing to do with the steam surrounding them.

Dany forced a laugh to diffuse the awkwardness. “Don’t worry, I promise I’m perfectly decent.”

Taking another deep breath, he slowly shifted his eyes to meet hers. “Why didn’t you lock the door?”

“I guess it must have slipped my mind, but it’s an honest mistake, I swear.” Gods, did he think she did it on purpose? “I’m not used to sharing a bathroom so I don’t usually worry about these things. Anyway, I’m almost done in here so just hang tight and it'll be all yours.”

To prove she wasn't bothered in the least, she switched sides, pumping another handful of lotion into her palms, and ran her hands up her leg to the bottom of her towel. She'd show him she didn't care at all that he was standing half-naked before her.

Dany made sure to keep her gaze steady and her voice even when she said, “There, all done as promised.”

One hand clutched the knotted towel between her breasts and the other scooped up her discarded clothes from the floor. As she walked away, Jon clearing his throat had her looking over her shoulder just in time to see him pick up a scrap of lace that fell out of her arms.

Saying nothing, he dangled her black panties from his outstretched fingers as a flush crept up his face.

“Sorry,” she squeaked out, cheeks pinking up in return. Snatching them back, she turned and fled toward her door. So much for decorum.

Once in the safety of her room, she let out a deep breath and decided to start unpacking. She was trying to keep busy and ignore the sound of the shower coming from the other side of her door. It naturally led to thoughts of Jon naked, his taut muscles wet and gleaming under the steady stream of pulsing water.

She had really tried not to stare at him, but it was impossible. The last time they saw each other was three years ago at her sixteenth nameday party. He had hit a growth spurt that year, his body bulking up with muscle due to rigorous football training, but still a boy’s body by all means. Tonight, he was every inch the man, and Dany felt a stirring deep in her belly.

The gods had been kind to Jaehaerys “Jon” Targaryen and while he didn’t have traditional Valyrian features like Rhaegar, he still possessed the infamous beauty that all Targaryens throughout history were known for.

As she pulled open drawers and folded clothes, she wondered what it would feel like to press her lips to his. They were lush and full, making her yearn for a taste. When they hugged at the airport, she reveled in his arms, feeling breathless against his chest while hoping he couldn’t feel her pounding heart through their embrace.

Being only three months apart in age, they had known each other from birth, although they hadn’t seen each other often growing up. After Rhae ran off to marry Lyanna, he left their family to move north. She asked him once why he didn’t live down south and he told her he liked being away from the politics and pressure of the capital city.

Their ancestors founded and ruled Westeros for centuries and though the monarchy was no more, their surname was still a powerful one. Their father Aerys was heavily involved in local politics and had a hand in several business ventures in and around Kings Landing. To his disappointment, Rhae chose a different path and preferred a simpler life.

It initially caused a falling out between them that took years to mend and contributed to Dany not seeing her brother as much in her early childhood. When their other brother, Viserys, followed their father into business, it went a long way to mend their relationship.

After his falling out, Rhae had to make his own way to support his family. As far as she knew, he’d never taken another penny from their parents and his trust fund sat untouched by his own choice. Rhae didn’t tell her any of this, but she overheard her parents talking about it once.

He and Lyanna weren’t flashy with their money and Jon had a much more normal childhood than she did. Not for the first time, she wondered how different her life would've been had she been raised by them instead of her parents.

The summer before her tenth nameday, she was finally deemed old enough to visit Winterfell alone. It was during those endless summer days that she and Jon cemented their bond. They were free to do as they pleased as long as they stayed out of trouble, which thrilled her to no end. In King's Landing, her schedule was filled to the brim with lessons her parents deemed important and she was always accompanied by a caregiver.

Jon allowed her to tag along on his adventures with his cousins Robb and Arya, and their friend Theon, spending their days climbing trees, biking around town, swimming in the numerous lakes and rivers in the area, and getting into all kinds of mischief. The north was filled with endless places to explore for a city kid like herself.

By the time puberty hit, the boys started playing sports so she mostly hung out with Sansa and her friend Margaery. Her interest shifted to clothes, makeup, and gossiping about celebrity crushes, so it was a natural progression to be pulled from their group. But when it was just the two of them at home, they still snuck into each other’s rooms to watch movies in bed. Some nights, they lay side by side and talked about their dreams until the early morning hours.

Missandei was her best friend, of course, but Jon was a different sort of best friend as well, and she missed the closeness they shared.

Three years was a long time to be away and she was determined to mend their broken relationship. She had wondered if her attraction to him had waned in their time apart, but nothing had changed. Maybe it was naive of her to come back knowing they couldn't be together romantically, but she missed him and her only goal was to have him back as a friend.

Sighing, Dany put her empty bags away and crawled into bed. Laying in the dark, she conjured up his warmth as he held her in his arms earlier, yearning for the touch of his lips that she knew would never come.

Notes:

Not much happens Ch 1; it's more laying out the backstory and setting the scene. It's definitely one of the shortest ones in the story as most will be between 6k-8k words, with a few exceeding that.

Kudos are appreciated, but I love comments even more.
