Work Text:
Kaminari was in his dorm room, lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling in silence. He was in a black t-shirt & ripped jeans with his arms spread out on top of his covers. He was having a bad day, which he has been having a lot of recently. His mind couldn’t stop racing with thoughts. Good & bad. He began overthinking about everything. So much so that it was giving him a headache. He began eating less every so often & eventually stopped coming into the common room area.
He heard a gentle knock coming from the other side. He lifted himself up, now sitting up, shoulders slouched & hair in his face. “Who is it?” he asked. He was so tired, he could barely speak. His voice was dry. Probably because he hadn’t drank any water today either & was too tired to move all the way to the kitchen to get some.
“Uh, Kaminari. This is Mineta,” a voice said. “Can I come in?”
Kaminari flopped back down on his bed. “If you can reach the door handle, sure. Go ahead,” he answered. He didn’t intend to, but his voice sounded angry & annoyed. Like he was about to punch whoever entered his room.
From the other side of the door, he heard a grunt followed by a click & twist. Then a thud. Finally, the door opened, revealing the purple haired grape boy bringing some food & water with him in a tray.
Kaminari glanced over, sitting himself back up again, not saying a word to him. Mineta walked over, carefully placing the tray on Kaminari’s bed before jumping up onto the bed next to him.
Kaminari stared at the plate of food. It was a hamburger, his favorite food, & next to it was a glass of water with a yellow swirly straw. He gave a weak smile as he looked at the food. His appetite was little, but the food looked so good. He’d only been eating bland food these past couple of days that a simple hamburger looked like a feast.
The yellow haired boy looked up at Mineta. “You did all this for me?” he asked him.
Mineta nodded. “Yup! Well, with the help of Jirou & Yaomomo,” he said.
Kaminari looked back down at the food. “Thanks…” He took a bite, enjoying the burger. If heaven was a flavor, this was it.
Mineta kicked his legs at the edge of Kaminari’s bed as he looked around the room. “You looked tired lately & everyone started to get worried,” he said, breaking the silence.
Kaminari raised an eyebrow, still chewing his burger. “How come?” he asked after he finished the bite.
“Well, you’re usually more energetic than this & were even more quiet than Kouda,” Mineta explained. “You were also avoiding us & practically stayed the whole day in here.”
“But I’ve only been here for a few hours,” Kaminari explained. “I woke up at eleven today.”
“Yeah, & now it’s 6 o’clock & evening.”
“Wow, I’ve been in here for that long?” he asked.
“Yeah,” he responded. “We wanted to know if something happened to make you down so we made you a burger.”
“Oh, thank you. I didn’t know you guys cared so much for me.” More silence. “I guess I just…” he paused. “I-I dunno. I’ve just been feeling tired lately,” he explained. “I don’t really know how to describe it, but I just haven’t been my best. Which I know I should be. Especially if I wanna become a hero but…” He shrugged, not knowing what else to say.
“I get it,” Mineta said. “A lot’s happened & I haven’t been feeling too well myself. Feeling like that is normal. Getting worried for you friend is normal too, which is why I wanted to check on you,” he explained, no longer kicking his legs. “You know, I’ll be here for you if you wanna talk cuz you’re my best friend after all. Even if I may not be considered yours since you also have a lot of friends, I still consider you my best friend. A-as a friend, I want to look out for you.”
Kaminari nodded, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Thanks for looking out for me. I’d consider you my best friend too,” he said.
After Kaminari finished, he leaned against the headboard of his bed, feeling slightly less exhausted. He crossed his legs, allowing Mineta more space to sit next to him.
“Still wanna watch the show we were watching a week ago?” Mineta asked, holding up his phone. Kaminari’s eyes lit up & he nodded as a response. They had watched the show religiously up until last week when Kaminari began to be distant. Mineta hadn’t watched the show since then since they were watching it together.
Mineta typed the episode in & held the phone up so the two could watch, sitting closely to Kaminari. The electric hero leaned on him slightly as they watched it out of habit. The two often shared physical affection platonically & when one of them had an off day, the other would be there for them.
They continued to watch the rest of the show, unsure of what the time was now. Mineta checked, still sitting next to him. It was the middle of the night now. 2:00 a.m. to be exact.
Kaminari leaned over his shoulder, looking at the time. “Wow,” he said. “We’ve been up for a while.”
Mineta nodded. “Yeah,” he replied, putting his phone away & yawning. He hopped off of Kaminari’s bed, heading towards the door.
“Uh, you know,” Kaminari said. “You can sleep over if you want.”
Mineta turned around & smirked, crossing his arms. “If I want, or if you want?” he asked.
Kaminari rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “I mean, kinda if I want,” he chuckled.
“Sleepover it is then,” Minet said, heading back to Kaminari’s bed.
They laid together in silence, Mineta already half asleep now on the opposite end of the bed, covered in blankets.
“Oh, hey Mineta?” Kaminari said.
Mineta groggily turned around to face his friend. “Hm?”
“Thanks for being my friend,” he said.
Mineta nodded, turning around to his original position. “Thanks for being mine too,” he replied, heading back to sleep again.
Sometimes, Kaminari needed space away from others. Especially during his off days. But other times, he just really needed a friend. Like now. Which was why he was glad he had a friend like Mineta around for him. Even when he didn’t think he needed it.
