Chapter Text
Being apart of Sherlock’s life was exhausting on a normal day, but when said curly haired genius was on a case it was extra exhausting. John had realised early on that to keep up with the other man he had to live off black coffee and red bull. As of this moment John was trailing behind Sherlock, close enough that he could feel the tips of his coat tails rub against his knuckles as he ran. The case they were on pretty much fell into their laps, that was six weeks ago. Now John, who had to pick up Rosie from Mary in a little under three hours, really wished this case hadn’t come to them. It had been the most exhausting six weeks that John had experienced, and he had a three-year-old. His chest had begun to burn, and his legs grew tired, but he continued to follow, as he always would. So, it would make sense if John went back to the beginning of this tale, so as he ran, he remembered how it started.
Six weeks ago.
Sherlock was roused from the dead of sleep due to a noise outside his bedroom door. His body slowly came to wakefulness as he heard his door slowly open, he kept his body as still as possible as a series of smells hit his nose. The first smell took him a fraction of a second to identify, it was the smell that belonged to John. The mint body wash that he used in the shower and his ridiculously expensive aftershave. The second was non-bio fabric softener and talcum powder, and that smell belonged to his favourite little bee. He heard John’s voice rumble through the room as he said to Rosie,
“Wake Sherlock up Rosie”
Little hands attached themselves to the comforter and used it to pull themselves up onto the bed, Sherlock prepared himself to be pounced on by a three-year-old. Thirty seconds later the small body landed on his and he opened his eyes and wrapped his arms around the girl that was plastered to his chest,
“Wake up S’lock Wake up “
Keeping one arm wrapped around his little bee, Sherlock pulled himself up so he was sat up against the headboard, he stuck his nose into the soft blond curls that lay messy on the toddlers crown, and inhaled deeply. Lifting his head, he said,
“Good morning my little bee, Good morning John”
John looked towards Sherlock with a small smile and said, “Good morning Sherlock, sorry for the early wakeup call but Rosie wanted you”
“Not to worry John, anything bee wants she gets”
They stayed like this for a good ten minutes before John detached the small human from Sherlock’s embrace, and left the room with a disgruntled Sherlock following them shortly after.
After showering and dressing, Sherlock dropped into his chair and watched John bustle around the kitchen while Rosie sat in Johns chair, chewing on her teddies ear.
In the kitchen ,John could hear Sherlock talking to Rosie, as he made Rosie’s toast , he couldn’t help but ponder on the situation that he was currently in.
Since he and Mary split and he moved back into 221B , he had seen a massive change in Sherlock, he knew the other man loved Rosie with every fibre of his being , he proved that when they moved back in.
John smiled as he stirred Sherlock's tea as he listened into Sherlock and Rosie talking.
“Rosamunde must you chew his ear. “.
Rosie looked up at Sherlock’s voice, the teddies ear falling from her mouth, she said, “Toofs hurt”
Without hesitation, Sherlock stood and picked up the small child and sat with her in his lap, when John entered the living room , Sherlock took the plate of jammed toast off the lighter hair man and pulled small pieces off and passed them to the child. He caught John’s raised eyebrow and said,
“Bees gums are sore, more of her teeth are coming through”
John nodded and moved to grab the bonjela from the fridge, turning and tossing it to Sherlock who caught it effortlessly, opening it and rubbing a small amount on Rosie's inflamed gums. They spent the rest of the morning chatting and eating, Rosie napped on Sherlock's chest while the two men spoke.
At quarter to ten in the morning, Greg Lastrade disturbed their quiet morning by dropping a gruesome case into John’s lap.
Blue eyes flicked to the dosing child on Sherlock's chest and he opened the file. He stomach churned as he looked at the pictures, and he knew that they would be burned into his brain for the rest of his life.
John rubbed a hand across his face and let out a deep sigh. The file contained the names of six young men who had been butchered. Each of them couples.
One blonde the other, brunette
