FRANCESCA POV
“Do you think we would’ve fallen in love sooner if it wasn’t for your plan with Ludmilla?” It was a beautiful sunny day in Buenos Aires, and I was having a romantic picnic with my handsome boyfriend Diego in the park. It was one of those days where you didn’t have to worry about a single thing. I was laying with my head in his lap, our hands intertwined and right now, nothing in the world could make ma happier.
I looked up in Diego’s dark blue eyes and waited for his reply. It was a question that popped into my mind regularly ever since we started dating but I never felt courageous enough to ask. Afraid that the attraction I felt for him when we first met wasn’t mutual. I mean I shouldn’t care because I’m certain about his feelings for me now.
“Well, I don’t know to be honest” he says. I sit up straight, keeping our hands still locked.
“I guess I’m just asking you whether or not you would’ve gone after Violetta or- “I bite my lip.
“You are wondering whether I found you attractive when we first met, right?” He asks teasingly, a goofy smile on his face. I can’t help but roll my eyes and shrug. Even though secretly, I’m very eager to know the answer. “So?” I ask, not very good at hiding my curiosity, which makes him chuckle.
“Francesca, the first time I laid eyes on you I knew I met the love of my life” He’s says mockery serious.
“Ha-ha, very funny!” I pull away my hands and playfully hit him, he starts laughing. I knew I shouldn’t have asked this.
“Now serious Diego, what did you really think of me when you first met me?” I’m not going to drop the subject until I know exactly.
“Okay, you’re right I didn’t know back then that I had met the love of my life yet, but I did think you were very pretty” He says, and I can tell he’s being sincere.
“Did you really?” I can’t help but ask, blushing a bit. Diego starts smiling and intertwines our hands again.
“Yes, obviously. I mean that black dress with the red, you looked so hot.” He says, I blush even more now. I can’t believe he remembers what I’d been wearing, a clear sign that he indeed noticed me.
“And what I always really liked about you was that you were really straightforward. Once you didn’t like something you would just straight up say it. It takes a lot of guts to do that. You didn’t buy all the lies and stuff. You were one of the few people who actually saw through me. Right from the start. And that intrigued me. You just didn’t take any of the bullshit.”
“That’s right I didn’t trust you at all. And my gut feeling about you was right, though.” I say and we both think back about the awful scheme he pulled with Violetta.
“I will never forgive myself for it. It was such a horrible thing to do, but I just didn’t know any better. I know that’s not an excuse but at least I learned a lot from it.” Diego says and he looks down a little sad. I give our tied hands a squeeze.
“You’re right, it wasn’t okay, but you were looking for your dad and, in the end, you realized that it was wrong, that’s the most important thing.” I say, I really hate it that Diego still beats himself about it.
He looks into my eyes and with a faint smile says: “Thank you, you always know just what to say.”
His glance shifts to our intertwined hands and he continues: “It still shocks me how I get to be this lucky, you know. I mean I did such horrible things and still I ended up with a father and you. I just don’t know how I deserved all this.”
“Because you’re a good person Diego that’s why” I say and nuzzle closer to him, hugging him tightly.
“I love you, mi amor” he whispers in my ear and places a sweet kiss on the top of my head. “Love you too” I smile back.
“But to come back to your original question, I’m glad we didn’t.” This takes me by surprise and I untangle myself from his arms, “What?”
“Don’t get me wrong sweetheart, I’m very happy with us.” He pulls me closer by his side stressing his words. “You know I am. I’m just saying that I needed to change first before you and I got together. Just thinking about how much I could’ve hurt you because of my arrogance… I wouldn’t even have realized it, or maybe I would have but too late. Just the thought alone of hurting you and losing my future with you is unbearable. So, I’m glad we didn’t get together.” After explaining it I know exactly what he means. He pulls me even closer, and we just lay in silence for a while.
“One thing that I do know for certain though is that you and I we were meant to be together from the start” he says a few seconds later. “Remember the suitcases?” he asks with a bright smile.
Of course, I remember, how could I forget. I had to miss my toothbrush and favourite clothes for two full days!
“Or maybe it just means we have a very good taste in suitcases” I joke which makes him crack up. “No, but seriously though, if that isn’t fate, I don’t know what is.” My words make him smile even wider.
“So, now that we’re on the matter. What did you think of me when we first met? I mean, except that I was godly looking of course.” He teases and I roll my eyes at him again.
“Well, I guess you were so-so looking and I kind of liked you, but then you opened your mouth the next day and ruined the magic. Remember when I brought back the suitcase and you acted all cocky.”
“Yeah, like I said I wasn’t really the best guy to fall for… But do you think you could’ve fallen for me if it wasn’t for the arrogance and you know, me pursuing Violetta?”
“I don’t know Diego… Maybe. Even though I probably would be very annoyed at first. I wouldn’t have made it easy for you though” I say, and Diego’s eyes widen.
“Yeah, I can imagine. You proved only a couple of months ago how difficult it was. You’re lucky I liked you so much, any other guy would’ve given up.”
“Wait, you only liked me?” I let go of him and look at him with squinted eyes.
“You got me; I was head over heels for you. Still am by the way” He slowly moves closer and slowly kisses my cheek. “That sounds more like it” I say happily, pushing my lips against his.
