Chapter 1: The Decision

Chapter Text

Ash and Veil hadn’t had an opportunity like this ever in their lives. They both knew what Europa held, so when they finally got the chance to explore this piece of history that they themselves were part of, they were more than excited to go and explore. They’d done much during their time on the moon, namely acquiring darkness power and killing Taniks again, an act that was majorly nostalgic for the two, considering their status as Iron Lords. Now the two stood in the ruins of the Deep Stone Crypt, presented with the opportunity to regain their memories. The only other member of their raid team staying with them being Fireteam Royal’s Titan, Zeya Xen.

Ash had been going through the heavily encrypted records in the Deep Stone Crypt servers, having had to sift through hundreds of individuals’ lives before finally finding the two she was looking for. She’d also set up a method of uploading the memories. It’d been difficult to rig, but it had been done. Now all that was left was the final decision: would it be better for them to know what their pasts were?

The three now stood by the terminal, attempting to answer the question being posed. Ash looked at Veil, who was staring blankly at the disk in her hand.

“What do you think?”

The hunter looked to her fellow Exo, before shaking her head. “I don’t know. I mean, I want to know, but if our investigations of the past are any indication, mine likely isn’t a happy past.”

Ash put a hand on Veil’s shoulder, “No matter what happens, I’ll be here for you.”

Zeya took a step forward, piping up for the first time since they’d been presented with the decision. “Me too, I owe you both a lot. I’ll do anything you need”

The two exos looked to the Titan, both nodding. Ash took Veil’s disk and approached the terminal while Veil approached Zeya. The Warlock got to work prepping the memories to be downloaded. “Make your mind up time, then. Zeya, I need you to press this button when I let you know. You’ll see a pop-up on the screen when the downloads are done. Once you see that, you’ll have to transmat us up to my Skiff and take us to the Tower, so we can rest safely.”

The Titan nodded, approaching the terminal as the two Exos removed their helmets, placing the makeshift device Ash had made onto their heads. It was comparable to a crown, with a series of anchors meant to keep it on their heads due to the inevitability of the pain of the memories being uploaded in this way. The two sat down on pieces of debris from the crypt, getting themselves stable before giving Zeya the go-ahead.

What followed was hard for the Awoken to watch, she’d never seen the others scream in pain like that. They looked like they were being tortured. She wanted to stop it, but Ash never told her how, and technology like this was beyond her. For all she knew, pushing the button again would make things worse, so all she could do was sit there and watch for almost half an hour until the screaming suddenly stopped.

Upon closer inspection, Zeya could see Ash and Veil weren’t moving. Aqua appeared over her shoulder and flew down to scan them.

“They’re alive, just unconscious. They’ll need a day or two for their minds to work with the information they got. Ash’s ship will be the best place for them.”

Zeya nodded and collected their things before the ghosts transmatted the group up to Ash’s skiff.
