Psychopomp and Circumstance

Summary:

In a sea of conflicting emotions, contempt is a siren.

Work Text:

With countenance ignored, and vigour self-assured
She finds herself aboard, a vessel most obscene
Determined, unastounded, and bravery unfounded
Foresight deftly clouded by the vast and deep serene
The starboard view beckoned, how beautiful, how clean

But merely moments prior, in circumstances dire
She wrought a crooked spire, her departure t'was aimed to spur
Was this memory invented? For the life she lived contented
Should conclude with her lamented, but that never did occur
And the starboard view seemed naught, but an aching, distant blur

An apparition dressed as mourner, did appear in the corner
Here to hint and warn her, of the conduct she'd maintained
"Though my presence won't be pleasing, there is no time to be easing
So I beg thee: start retreating", uttered with a smile constrained
The starboard view presented gloom, with eulogy ingrained

"I trust thee surely hath suspicion of the approaching expedition
But thou art in no position to resist my offer gracious
Through thy most untimely passing, thy worries surely are amassing
But there is no point in asking, and thy hopes would be fallacious"
The view across the starboard mirrored blackened sun minacious

"Though thine eyes doth cut as thorns, thou views thyself forlorn
And thou hath no-one else to mourn, unless thy response can belie?
But alas, miss, evidently, it seems thine obol prevents thee
From so inelegantly uttering an oaf's reply"
The starboard view did darken, as angst eclipsed her eyes

The strangers veil of black cloth, the touch of awful sackcloth
And her heartbeat, or the lack of, left a pit of sorrow still
For the words that he had spoken, were having influences potent
Her soul abandoned, broken, left her inclining to shrill
As the starboard view was barren, save for anguish and for chill

As the waves began their tossing, with no thought of ever stopping
She began the fated crossing, with the coin that she had kept
In a manner non-concerning, past the point of no returning
And for home she began yearning, as the twisted faces crept
And the starboard view was veiled by the tears that she wept
