Morning Light

Summary:

Inside their room, the universe felt like it was at peace. How could anything in the galaxy be wrong when so much light and beauty existed in it? Outside their room, though, life continued in its messy and inconvenient patterns. And those inconveniences decided it was time to come knocking at their door.
~*~
Set after the events of "More Light than Heat."

Notes:

This is part of the series following my fic "More Light than Heat." You should read that before this, or this won't make much sense.

This fic takes place the morning after the end of ch. 6 of More Light than Heat

Din and most other characters are speaking in Mando'a, and any dialogue formatted like "[ ... ]" should be understood as things said in Mando'a.

Work Text:

Luke had latched himself on Din in the night, one leg looped around Din’s two, an arm over Din’s chest, his head resting on Din’s shoulder with his other arm and hand curled up near his face. His gold hair stood out against the light blue pillows and warm tones of Din’s skin. Din looked down at him, careful not to move or wake him up, admiring him in the morning light.

He was beautiful. And he loved him. Din smiled remembering the way they had exchanged those words the night before over and over again, like neither could believe that they were true.

They were going to spend all day together, Din decided, not willing to let Luke go. They’d earned a day off. He wondered if Luke would wake early enough for them to make love in the soft morning light before breakfast. Or maybe he would let him sleep peacefully and bring him breakfast in bed. Or maybe they’d both get up together to wake up Grogu and bring him to breakfast. All seemed equally pleasing, he thought, as he enjoyed the soft feeling Luke’s gentle breath against his shoulder.

Inside their room, the universe felt like it was at peace. How could anything in the galaxy be wrong when so much light and beauty existed in it? Outside their room, though, life continued in its messy and inconvenient patterns. And those inconveniences decided it was time to come knocking at their door.

Luke thankfully didn’t stir at the sound or as Din carefully untangled himself from him. They’d fallen asleep naked, and the only thing Din could find to cover himself quickly was Luke’s robe. The sleeves were wide enough to accommodate his arms, even if it was small. It closed around him well enough - it was tight, short, and obviously not his, but it would do.

Din opened the door slowly, and rolled his eyes when he was met with Boba. “[Whatever the problem is, deal with it.]”

Boba looked like he wanted to laugh at Din in Luke’s robe, but he didn’t say anything about it. “[Just came to ask if you’d be working today.]”

“[No,]” Din said, “[I won’t be.]”

“[That’s what I told the rest of them, but they still insisted I come up and check on you.]” He peaked past Din towards the bed. “[Did you know he was planning to do that?]” Din assumed he meant the challenge.

Din shook his head. “[No.]” Din hadn’t even suspected it. He knew Luke was a good fighter, and he never doubted that he could fight for himself. But Din accepting the challenge was the expectation. He hadn’t even known that Luke had learned the words to say.

The surprise of it shocked Din at first, and then terrified him. Luke wore no armor, he wasn’t used to fighting Mandalorians, and they wouldn’t be gentle on him. He could have been killed. But he wasn’t. When it was clear that Luke was going to win the fight, there was nothing Din could do to hold back the reality of his love for him. Or his arousal, which he was sure didn’t go unnoticed by most in the room. He adored his husband, every part of him.

“[He’s something else,]” Boba said, trying to look past Din again. Din turned his head to look behind him, and found that Luke had rolled over so his face and torso were now facing the door, uncovered.

Din closed the door, stepping into the hallway.

“[No need to be possessive,]” Boba said.

“[I’m not,]” Din protested, “[just want to protect his privacy.]”

Boba laughed. “[Protect his privacy? Like you two didn’t have sex on the roof last night?]” Din tried to stammer a response, surprised to hear that they’d been caught. “[Paz saw you. Don’t worry, I don’t think he watched long.]”

Din didn’t feel embarrassed, and he hoped that if (when) Paz or Boba made a joke about it that Luke didn’t feel embarrassed either. Their love making was beautiful, natural, and there was no shame in others knowing about it.

“[You should thank me,]” Boba said.

“[Why? Bo-Katan is the one who arranged all of this,]” Din reminded him. Boba had hated the idea of him marrying a Skywalker ever since Bo-Katan had raised it as a possibility. He hadn’t made things easy on Luke either.

“[I was the one who insisted she find you someone pretty,]” he reminded him. “[But you’re right. She’s going to be an arrogant bitch about how well arranged this whole thing was once she finds out you’re in love.]”

He didn’t know how Boba could tell, or maybe he just assumed. His friend had always been good at reading him. And, besides, he was pretty sure Luke left half the room in love with him the night before. Din was the only one with the pleasure of being able to act on that love. He’d be a fool and a coward not to admit his feelings after that.

“[Get back to your lover,]” Boba said. “[We’ll do our best to keep the peace without you.]”

“[Thank you,]” Din said, heading back into the room.

Luke was still asleep, but he was glad he’d made the choice to close the door. Without Din to hold onto, he seemed to roll around a lot. Now, he was laying on his back, sheets completely discarded, laying out in the sunlight, his beautiful body completely on display.

A delicate wave of arousal rolled over Din, and he thought about crawling on top of him to kiss him awake, or to let him wake up to the feeling of his cock in Din’s mouth. He decided against both. He looked so beautiful and peaceful it would have been a crime to wake him up.

Din walked over to his desk and opened the top drawer. He pulled out this datapad and scrolled through a few old files until he found the holo he was looking for.

It was Luke’s face floating next to basic information about him - home planet, parents, main benefits of a marriage to him (politically strong, intelligent, force-sensitive, speaks six languages, preference for male partners). It had been his Jedi training and apparent care for children and refugees that had drawn Din to Luke’s profile instantly.

“[Do you have any preferences?]” Bo-Katan had asked him. “[Gender, sex, species, looks?]”

Din had just shrugged. None of that had ever mattered to his covert, and he still didn’t really understand why everyone else seemed to value it so much. He’d never had a preference for the gender of his partners, let alone caring about their sex. It all seemed a bit invasive and immodest to him. Looks were another thing he didn’t mind. Until becoming Mand’alor he assumed that if he ever did marry, he wouldn’t know what they looked like until after the wedding.

“[No,]” he said. “[Human would be best.]” Predictable at least. He’d only had one non-human partner, a twi’lik who was too preoccupied with knives and getting under his helmet for his own comfort. He more or less lost the taste for non-humans after that.

He wanted to ask if they could find a Jedi, or someone who knew them. He knew Bo-Katan had connections to the order, and they all knew about his son’s powers. But the Jedi didn’t marry. The odds of finding a non-Jedi force user with all the other political benefits they were looking for was small.

“[Try and find him someone pretty,]” Boba insisted.

Bo-Katan had taken down all of those unhelpful notes and set to work.

She came back a few days later with a short list. “[I think he,]” she opened Luke’s holo, “[is our best opinion. His mother is a sitting senator and former chancellors, father is ex-Jedi. He’s twenty-eight, force-sensitive according to all accounts, and kind-hearted.]”

“[It has to be a Skywalker?]” Boba asked.

“[What’s wrong with Skywalkers?]” Din asked.

“[His father was Jedi. Order 66 survivor. And he was there the day the Jedi killed my father,]” Boba explained. The tensions between the clones and the son of Jedi could pose an issue. But Bo-Katan had only brought him names of those who were willing to enter negotiations of a marriage contract. So it wasn’t a dealbreaker. At least, not for Skywalker.

“[His father left the order when Luke was a child. No one knows for sure why he and his sister were never trained at the Temple,]” Bo-Katan said. “[But he’s been seen using the force and a lightsaber, the weapon of a Jedi.]” She scrolled through some holos until she reached one of Skywalker fighting. It seemed to be a training sequence. He was blindfolded, and a droid was firing blaster shots at him. He wasn’t bad, Din noted.

Din had taken the datapad back to his room and spent hours staring at the holos of Luke. He looked him up on the holonet to see what others thought about him. He had a nice reputation and seemed to be generally well liked. He  seemed to have a number of past lovers, many of them older, which boded well for Din since they were nearly a decade apart in age.

The holonet was full of additional stories and holos of him. There were more of him helping children on other planets working to recover from the lingering stings of the galactic war. There were a few of him fighting. But most of them were him dressed for formal occasions. He was opulent, dressed in regal clothing, decorated with jewelry and make up, sometimes in pants and long tunics, other times in gowns. People rarely dressed like that on Mandalore, and certainly never in his covert. He was intrigued by the style. Skywalker did not look like a Mandalorian. He was small, well-dressed, beautiful. But the point of the arrangement wasn’t to marry a Mandalorian.

“[Find someone pretty,]” Boba had said. Bo had delivered. Skywalker was stunning. There was no doubt, Din realized, that he was the first choice.

He just hoped Skywalker’s beauty didn’t wilt on Mandalore.

Din turned to look at Luke laid out on his bed in full bloom. He closed the holo, wanting to be close to the real Luke instead. He shed the bathrobe and slipped back into bed, pressing kisses over the gentle skin of Luke’s shoulder and collar bone.

“Din?” Luke asked, starting to wake up. “[Time?]”

“[Morning,]” Din said. Luke made a little noise almost like a laugh at the vague answer.

“[How morning?]” Luke asked. Din smiled. He loved the sound of Mando’a in Luke’s mouth. He tried to make the accent sound right, but there was always a heavy twinge of basic on his words that should have annoyed him. But Din was endeared to the sound, and he took pride in all the effort Luke was making to learn. And he loved Luke’s silly little mistakes or his ways around forgotten or unknown words. How morning, Din couldn’t help himself, and leaned down to kiss Luke’s lips. They were dry from a long night of sleeping, but Din didn’t mind.

He pulled away. “[How early?]” He asked, correcting Luke’s words. Luke just made an indifferent, tired sound, snuggling into Din’s chest. “[Seven thirty,]” Din said.

He thought Luke might fall back asleep, and he was sure if he did that he’d join him. Before Luke could fall asleep again, though, he asked. “[Do you want to eat?]”

Luke looked up at him and flashed him a wicked smile. “[Eat what?]” Din smiled back at him, and placed both his hands on Luke’s hips to lift him onto Din’s lap, letting Luke straddle him the way he had the night before. Luke settled across his hips, hands pressed against Din’s shoulders. Din’s cock twitched at the memory of the night before.

But Luke winced in pain at the movement. “Good?” Din asked.

“[I hurt,]” Luke said. Instinctively, one of Din’s hands dropped to Luke’s ass, rubbing it gently. “No,” Luke laughed. “[from the challenge.]” Din laughed.

He brushed a finger of Luke’s nose gently. “Good?” He asked.

“Yes,” he said. He said a few more words in basic, but all Din caught was ‘my,’ before Luke started to point to his body parts. “My arms,” he said, rubbing the tops of his arms and shoulders, “back,” he did his best to reach his back. “And thighs,” he ran his hands over the front of his thighs. Din replaced his hands with his own, rubbing his thighs to massage them; the movement was gentle and precise, but the pressure was deep, and Luke tilted his head back and groaned at the relief of having the muscles worked over a little.

“[Here,]” Din said, moving Luke off his lap gently until he was sitting at the edge of the bed, his feet on the floor.

Din pressed kisses into his neck as he worked out knots in Luke’s shoulders. He was tense, and Din figured it couldn’t all be from such a short challenge. He let his hands work down to the middle of Luke’s back. It would have been easier if Luke were laying face down, but he didn’t want to hurt his nose. The bacta had cleared up the bleeding and bruising, but it was probably still sore. Din knew from experience.

Din kept at it, working at the tight muscles and relishing in Luke’s little moans as he found some relief under Din’s hands. “[I’m not working today,]” Din said slowly, his mouth close to Luke’s ear.

He gave Luke a moment to translate. Luke hummed contently, so Din figured he got enough of his words. “[I am lucky,]” Luke said back to him.

Din wrapped his arms around Luke, resting his head on his shoulder. “[So am I, love,]” Din said.
