Work Text:

It was summer and the annual Karasuno High school festival was coming near.
Every class had to plan something and present it, whether it be a cafe, selling waffles etc.

Class 1-4 had already planned the rough outlines out: A musical, and the most popular two would be doing the main roles.
These two people happened to be Y/N and Tsukishima Kei, a duo that weren't exactly enemies, but also not exactly friends. They got along if they had to, but barely interacted during class times.

Of course, the play was a romance.
Of course, they had to present it to the school and parents.
Of course, both of them did not agree to this.

The (h/c) girl had crossed her arms as she sat on her table, looking at her classmates.
„I'm not doing a romance with that one."
Her eyebrow lifted subtly in his direction, clearly annoyed by whatever her class was planning for a musical.

It was not, that she wouldn't agree to do a musical, no. In fact, she liked singing and she was actually pretty good at it, but together with this tall blonde boy?
Y/N would rather get an A in math than do that.

But her classmates didn't step down, not even, when Tsukishima also disagreed multiple times, complaining about this and that, and the whole musical idea, not even wanting to be a part of it (just to think of: wanting the male lead).

So here they were, in a classroom all by themselves with sheet paper on their desks, vividly avoiding each other.
Neither spoke, looked up or got up for a solid 90 minutes.
Then, they'd get up and go to their club activities, still not saying a word.

As she walked off towards the (club name) clubroom, Tsukishima's gaze followed her, raising an eyebrow, before scoffing and turning around, making his way to the gym.

„Pathetic." He thought and pushed open the door to the clubroom.

He was approached by Yamaguchi, who had already changed into his gym clothes.
„Hey Tsukki! How was practicing your lines with (Last Name)-chan?"
„It's not like we talked. We can't really stand each other, y'know."

But isn't that exactly what practicing lines is about it musical theatre? Talking?

Yamaguchi was surprised by his answer, but still smiled.
„Right, you aren't really friends. Sorry Tsukki."

Yamaguchi left the room and headed to the gym, leaving Tsukishima so that he could get changed.

„It's ridiculous. Why her?" He muttered under his breath and sighed, getting changed.

It went similar for Y/N. Her friends were constantly asking about Tsukishima and how their practice went.
She got sick of it and didn't answer them anymore at some point, just doing her club work in quiet.

But as she was doing it, her thoughts trailed off to the tall blonde.

Did he really hate her that much?
Did he even take this whole musical seriously?
Can he even sing well?

At some point she just sighed and relaxed in her chair. She should stop thinking about it.

„Hey, I'm gonna go grab something to drink." Y/N said and them got up, walking to the vending machines near the gym.

She put her coins in, clicked some buttons and waited for the (bottle/can) of (fav drink) to fall to the bottom.
As she took it out, she heard some shouting. It was rather cheerful though.

The girl got curious and went to the entrance of the gym, the door being opened just a bit.
She could see a couple of boys playing volleyball against each other with a coach and teacher standing to the sidelines.

But something or more someone caught her eye.

It was Tsukishima, who just successfully blocked a spike of a brown haired third year.

Her eyes were locked with the scene in front of her. How he jumped high, held his arms and hands in a perfect form and the sound of the ball as it fell to the ground.

Was this really the grumpy Tsukishima, Mr I-Don't-Give-A-Shit, she had in her class?

In all her staring, she didn't notice that a few people had noticed her standing in the door, until Tsukishima turned around and raised an eyebrow at her.

Y/N was frozen in place, not being able to handle the situation she was in, simply watching as a couple of people were coming closer.

„Uh...Hi? I'm so sorry if I'm interrupting anything! I just got really curious!" She started explaining and pressed her palms together, holding the (bottle/can) in her thumb, having it wrapped around the neck of the bottle/body of the can.

„No, it's fine! Really! Would you like to watch us for a bit?" A boy with greyish silver hair asked, smiling at her.
„I would, but I have to return to my own club, thanks for the invitation though!"

The (h/c) girl smiled and held onto her drink, bowing to the team.
„I'm sorry if I caused any trouble, I'll get going now!" She bowed again and then waved goodbye to the boys, before walking out the door again.

This...was awkward. But she had definitely not expected him to be a volleyball player, a very good one to that too.

When she let herself sink into the chair in her club, her cheeks had turned pink, from embarrassment but also because of adrenaline, as she got straight up caught peeking.

__

The next morning, as Y/N was walking to school, she saw Tsukishima at the gates, walking next to Yamaguchi. The latter seemed to talk about something, while Kei just listened and nodded, occasionally.

She decided to walk up to him and as she reached his side, he stopped.
„What?" His voice was calm, with an annoyed undertone laying in it.
„Will we practice our lines today? For real now? Same room, same time?"
She was completely different than the day before.

While y/n used to be annoyed of him 24/7 and would refuse to do any kind of project with him, she actually wanted to practice her lines.
On the other hand, she really wanted to get to know his other side. The side, where he wouldn't insult her for nothing. The side, that isn't grumpy Tsukki.

„Fine. Don't be late." He nodded and rolled his eyes, beginning to walk again, following his best friend who had already gone ahead.
„Oi, wait Tsukishima. We can walk to class together!"

__

When their classes ended, Y/N made her way to the room they were practicing in, grabbing her favorite drink on the way there.

When she opened the door, Tsukishima was already waiting for her, sitting on a chair with his text in his hands.
„There you are. Come on, let's start."

She sat down and pulled out her own copy of the text, laying the small booklet on the table in front of her.

„About yesterday. I didn't know you could play volleyball." She said as she was looking for the right page.

„So? Was I so amazing that you couldn't move, huh?" He snickered and grinned at her, putting one leg over the other.

„Oh shut up and let's just begin."

„Kaoru, what are you doing?"
„I'm packing my things."
„What for? Are you going to leave me?"
„Listen, Aiko, it's not safe here for the both of us. As long as I'm here, you will never be safe. I have to go."

Kaoru zipped up his bag and got up, walking towards the door without saying anything more.
As he opened it, the smaller girl had wrapped her arms around his waist from behind.

„Please...don't go Kaoru..."
„I'm sorry Aiko..."
He turned around and lifted up her chin, pulling her into a sweet kiss-

Y/N slammed her text on the table.
„We have to kiss?!"

Tsukishima scrunched up his nose and furrowed his eyebrows.
„What kind of musical did they choose?"
He asked in disbelief as he looked up at the girl in front of him.

They remained quiet for a couple of minutes, simply staring at the text and exchanging looks.

„I mean, we can't do anything about it, can we?" Tsukishima then said and sighed, leaning back in his chair and putting his hands in the pockets of his uniform pants.
„I don't think so...Let's just skip this part until later..."

Days passed. Weeks even.

Tsukishima and Y/N had met up after class every day to go over their text and act out some of the scenes, but never THAT scene.

They would practice their lines, grab a drink together.
He would escort her to her club before he went to his own, but then in class, they'd be the same enemies they'd been before. Insulting and yelling at each other, not talking unless it was necessary.
Then it was afternoon again and they would practice their texts again - and Tsukishima had actually fun doing something like that, something, that he hasn't had for a long time.

One day, she decided to come along to the volleyball club to watch them again, so the two of them went to the gym, parting ways so that the boy could get changed in the clubroom.

She, on the other hand, went straight inti the gym and took off her shoes, sitting on a bench not far from the court.

A couple of boys were already there, so when they noticed the (h/c) girl, they waved at her and she waved back.
„Hey guys! I had some time so why not come here to watch you!" She said and smiled, as Tsukishima walked into the gym.

„Oi, (first name), you're too loud y'know." He said as he put on his glasses after he cleaned them with his shirt.
„Shut up Tsukishima. At least I'm not blind." She crossed her arms and stuck her tongue out.

Y/N didn't say anything about him using her first name. Not, that she allowed it, but she wasn't bothered by it either.

The ones who were confused, were the boys from the team.
„You know each other?" A short boy with bright orange hair asked. His name was Hinata, she believed, having him seen a couple times in the other first year classrooms.
„Hm? Oh yeah, we're in the same class. He's an asshole tho."
„Thank you very much."

Before they could insult each other more, their coach called them to himself and the girl went up to the top floor, watching them from above.

__

After volleyball practice, Y/N waited outside of the clubroom for Tsukishima, sitting on the stairs with the musical manual open in her hands.

„Okay, see you tomorrow guys!" Yamaguchi said with a bright smile as he left the room together with Tsukishima.

They saw her sitting on the stairs and as they walked past her, Tsukishima held out his hand to help her up.
„Can't believe you're waiting for us shorty." He grinned and let go of her hand as she was standing on her feet.

Actually, she was just waiting for him, but she couldn't say that.

„Huh, I waited for Yamaguchi. Why would I wait for you?" She said instead and walked next to Yamaguchi, making him flustered.
„Ouch" Kei then said sarcastically and started walking as well, being on Yamaguchi's other side.

When Tadashi said goodbye to them and turned into the street where he lived, they were alone again, walking in silence, until it was the girls turn to go home.
She took out her keys and waved at Tsukishima. „Bye Tsukki! See you tomorrow!" She said with a smile and went into her house, leaving Tsukishima with a slight tint of pink on his cheeks.

If they were really considered enemies, then why did it feel like his heart melted away when she smiled at him? Why did his legs seemed to go weak for just a second? Why was he blushing?

__

That smile. He couldn't get it out of his mind. How she was standing there on the doorstep, smiling at him in the moonlight. He couldn't forget it.

Tsukishima arrived at home and opened the door to the house.
„I'm back."
He took off his shoes and changed into his slippers, going into the kitchen/hallway area, where he was already awaited by his mother and brother.
„Hello Kei, how was school?" His mother asked kindly, as she prepared a bowl of Miso Soup for her youngest son.
„It was okay, like always."
He quickly put his bag into his room and came back to the table, sitting down next to Akiteru.

Before eating he prayed and then took the spoon to eat the soup with.
He wasn't much of a talker, so conversations would mostly be in between Akiteru and his mother.
„Hey, I heard that your class was doing a musical for the School Festival! Are you participating?" His older brother asked and looked at Kei.
He nodded and swallowed one bit of tofu.
„Yes, they gave me the male lead. Not that I wanted it or anything." Kei explained and continued eating.

„So you're also gonna sing, right? I mean it's a musical." Akiteru added and his younger brother nodded again.
„What is it about?" His mother then asked and Kei furrowed his eyebrows a little bit.
„It's some kind of romance. Cringe, if you ask me."

„Oh, so who's the lucky girl you're on stage with?" His brother teased and nudged his side.
The taller blonde felt a bit of warmth flushing into his cheeks.
Trying to shake it off, he just put on a plain face. „(last name) (first name)."

Akiteru and their mom looked at each other with a knowing smile.
„You can invite her over one time." His mother offered and chuckled, drinking her tea.
„And why would I do that?"
„Oh come on Kei. Don't be so oblivious to yourself. You were blushing before you said her name~"
„Shut up Akiteru."

Kei finished his food and got up.
„Thanks for the meal, it was very tasty." And with that, he disappeared into his room.

He grabbed a few clothes and went to the bathroom, hopping under the shower after he took his old clothes off and threw them into the laundry.

The warm water made his shoulders relax and his mind got clouded with thoughts again.

Did he like her?
If he did, when did this happen?

He sighed and rested his forehead against the tiles of the bathroom, just standing there while the water ran down his back.

If he would accept his feelings, was she feeling the same way?

Tsukishima didn't know.

He got out of the shower after cleaning his body and washed his hair, drying himself up and changing into a fresh pair of boxers and pyjamas.

Kei went back to his room after brushing his teeth and drying his hair, checking his phone for messages. There were none.
He clicked on his messenger and clicked on Yamaguchi's contact, tapping the chat bar.

Tsukki: How do you know you like someone?

He was hesitant about tapping the send button, but he eventually did.
Just a few minutes later he got an answer.

Yams: Hm, I'd say you get flustered about that person and you can't stop thinking about her (or him). Why do you ask? Is there someone who caught your eye? ;)

Tsukishima sighed and tapped the chat bar again.

Tsukki: Maybe. Thank you Tadashi.

He locked his phone and laid down on his bed, chin resting on his pillow.
So he did like her.

Tsukishima grabbed his headphones and plugged them into his phone, playing some music, and eventually he fell asleep with her being on his mind.

__

It wasn't until a couple of days later, that Tsukishima decided to actually confess to her. Quick and simple. I like you.
Or well, that was the plan.

They were going over their text, sitting on a bench near the gym.
She acted out her character and waited for him to respond, holding her position what her character was doing in that scene.

Tsukishima, on the other hand, was still going over how he would confess to her and completely missed when he had to say something.

„Tsu-ki-shi-ma! It's your turn! You completely missed it!"
She sighed and looked at him.

They started all over again, but at a few parts, Tsukishima would always miss his
part.

„This is the seventh time now! Take this seriously!"
„I am taking this seriously!"
„Then why do you keep missing? We have been rehearsing this for a month now, you should be knowing your parts!"
„I'm sorry that I'm not perfect, okay?!"
„God, sometimes, I really don't know if I should like or hate you, but right now, I hate you!"

Tsukishima blinked and shook his head im surprise. She hated him? Maybe she said that, but she clearly didn't mean that.

„That's not true."

„Huh?"

Tsukishima got up and walked up until he was standing right in front of her.

„I know you're mine and no one else can have you." He lifted her chin up, smirking, but still blushing.

She was shaking as he took her hands and held her wrists softly.

„You're shaking? Oh, am I making you nervous?"

She sighed.

„God no, you're just an asshole." She said and pulled away her hands.

„You're right. Asshole at your service." He winked at her and leaned against the vending machine.

„You say you hate me."

„Yes, right now I hate you. And with that attitude you'll never find someone to date."

„Why? Would you date me? You say that you hate me, but we both know that's not true."

He came closer to her again, but she turned the other way, not facing him.
„You try to avoid me."
„Because you annoy me."

He was smirking.
„I know you're lying, why else would you be blushing like you do?"

He grabbed her hands and led her into the gym, starting to sing his words now.

„You must've fallen hard for me by now."

„As if you know how to love"

„Maybe I could show you how? I'm an asshole, I get it, but I promise I'll be kind!"

He swirled her around.

„If I hated you that much, why would you be on my mind?"

„Wait, I'm on your mind?"

„I think you're perfect" he whispered.

„I heard that~"

„You heard that?! Shut up, pretend you didn't!"
He laid a finger on her lips and sealed them.

„Whatever, just remember that you're mine now and I won't let you forget it."
With his last sentence he came closer to her and pecked her lips just for a second, before he parted from her, letting go of her arms as well.

As he turned around, he turned bright red.

I didn't really just perform a whole song about how I like her-

He turned around again, the confidence faded quickly and now both of them were just flustered.

„Uhm..so you like me?"
Y/N asked and Tsukishima nodded, having his hand holding his neck as he was nervous.

Y/N came closer to him and took both of his hands.
„Then that makes two of us. I like you too." She smiled and hugged him, having her head right on his chest near his heart.

As they pulled away, Tsukishima pointed on the textbook in her hand.
„I think we still have to cover one specific scene." He said and smiled.

Y/N didn't say anything. She knew which scene he meant.
She grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him into a kiss, holding him as close as possible.

Bonus Material:

1..
Sugawara and Daichi were on their way to the gym to prepare something for the club. They noticed, that the door was opened, and they also heard voices from inside, so they went to the window right next to the door and peeked through it.

It was Tsukishima with that girl from earlier and they were...dancing?

„Is he singing a song right now?" Daichi wondered as he watched their two kouhais in the gym.
„I suppose...Wait! Did he just peck her lips?! Omg Daichi, we're the first ones to know about Tsukishima's relationships! Let's take a picture to tease him later!" Suga exclaimed and took out his phone, but before he could take a picture, Daichi took his phone and shoved it in his pocket.

„I think we have seen enough, let's just-
Hold up, Tsukishima just smiled! And she is pulling him into another kiss!"
Daichi gave Suga his phone back and let him take a picture.
„NOW we can go!"

2..
The day of the School Festival has come and parents, siblings and students were walking around the campus, wanting to see the different activities their family members had planned.

The musical of Tsukishimas and Y/N's class was settled around noon, so when their families, teachers and friends filled up the seats in the auditorium, they gulped.

„Hey, we got this." Tsukishima tried to calm her down and smiled, as the lights were going off so that the two of them could get in position.

...

Tsukishima had just finished his sentence and he turned around, holding up her chin and pulling her into a soft kiss.

„I am back, Aiko, and I won't ever leave you again."

The lights turned off and the audience clapped.
In between, the Karasuno volleyball club, who were frozen in place.

„Did...Did Tsukishima just kiss her twice?!" Tanaka and Nishinoya asked in disbelief, looking at their teammates.

„It's a musical, guys. It's their roles. I'm just surprised that he can sing." Suga wondered and them winked at Daichi.
„But there's always a different side of people we can't see."

3..
It was the weekend after the festival. Kei's mom invited Y/N over for dinner and now that the two of them were actually dating, she was more than just willing to come. They still had to tell their families though.

The girl got ready at home, wearing a simple, but pretty outfit and brushing her hair before putting it in a cute hairstyle.
She said goodbye to her parents and made her way towards the Tsukishima residence.

When she arrived, she was awaited by Kei, who opened the door for her and kissed her quickly, before Akiteru came to the door as well, greeting her and introducing himself to her.

All of them gathered around the dining table and prayed before starting to eat.

„I'm happy to have you here, Y/N-chan! You can call me Nanako!" His mother offered her and smiled kindly.
„Thank you! I'm really happy as well to be here! You all can call me (first name)! No need to be so formal!" Y/N said and smiled, eating a bit of her food.

„So you're in the same class, right?" Akiteru asked and she nodded.
„Yes, we are! We're also seat neighbors."
„Wow that's really cool!"
„Now you're just exaggerating, Nii-san." Kei said and sighed, eating his meat.

When they finished eating, she helped Nanako cleaning up and chatted with her a bit, while Kei and his brother stayed behind at the table.

After the two females also took their seats again, Y/N and Kei exchanged a look, nodding almost unnoticeable.

„We actually have an announcement to make." Kei started and blushed a bit.

Akiteru and his mother exchanged a look.

„We're dating!" Y/N said and blushed a bit, before smiling and waiting for their reactions.

Akiteru grinned and hit his brothers back. „Congrats guys! Welcome to the family, (first name)!"
„Welcome to the Tsukishima family, (first name)!"

Nanako and Akiteru were really supportive and glad, that Kei had found someone he liked.
And her parents were supportive too, but her father made sure to have Kei promise a lot, before approving.

Overall, it were really positive reactions and that's enough to make the couple happy.
