Chapter Text
"I have to leave."
Those were Scaramouche's words as he stood by the open door.
He didn't look like he wanted to leave her, but duty is duty. By joining the Fatui all those years ago, he had promised to the Tsaritsa that he would do whatever she asked him. Even if it meant him leaving his girlfriend who he loved so very much.
That's his duty as a Fatui Harbinger.
The Tsaritsa's word is law.
"Scara please, you promised you would never leave me."
Mona could have read the stars and seen that he was destined to leave her. But she hadn't. She had preferred to get into the relationship blind, with no guidance from the stars whatsoever.
She had expected him to maybe die. After all, being a Fatui Harbinger was a dangerous job. He could be misfortunate enough to die while on a mission
But leaving her? She hadn't expected that.
She truly felt stupid at that moment. She should have expected him to leave her in the end. An order from his boss meant more than a promise he made to her.
"I am so sorry Mona, I love you," he said as he stepped outside and closed the door behind him.
She wanted to tell him that she also loved him and that she always will.
But in between her sobbing and the door closing fast, she didn't have the chance to. How was he supposed to know now?
That night, Mona cried so much that she wanted to throw up. And in the morning, she did.
Unknown to her, the nausea she experienced in the morning was different from the one she experienced the previous night from crying nonstop for a while.
It wasn't until the following few days that she began to suspect the nausea. The first morning, she thought it was normal for her to throw up since she had felt nauseous, but the others? Something was definitely up.
And so, she decided to pay Barbara a visit. Maybe she would know what was up with her health.
As she entered the cathedral, she immediately spotted the pigtailed deaconess and began to make her way towards her.
Upon seeing Mona approaching her, Barbara gave her a warm smile. "Hello Mona! What brings you here?"
"I think I'm having an issue regarding my health."
"Oh! Could you please describe the issue?"
"I've been vomiting a lot lately, especially in the morning. I've been under… A lot of emotional distress lately so I was wondering if that's what is causing it," Mona explained.
"Has the nausea affected you right as you woke up or did you cry before being affected by the nausea?"
"Right as I wake up."
"Well," Barbara started. "While crying a lot can cause nausea, it is odd that it affects you right as you wake up… Have you had… Relations in the past month and a half or so?"
Mona froze as the deaconess sheepishly asked the question.
"Yes… I have…"
"There's a possibility you might be with child if that's the case."
Mona's heart dropped.
A baby?
The timing couldn't have possibly been worse. Why did she possibly have to get pregnant and find out right after he left her?
Why?
" Oh . Is there any way to know for sure?"
She could wait for nighttime to arrive and check the stars, but she wanted to know for sure as soon as possible.
"There are a few. Would you rather get the results faster or do you not mind waiting?"
"As fast as possible, please."
"Then you should go to Sucrose, her method is way faster than mine."
"Alright, thank you," Mona said as she began to turn around.
"It's no problem! I hope you get whatever result you're hoping for!" the deaconess exclaimed as the astrologist walked away.
If she was being honest with herself, Mona had mixed feelings about what result she wanted.
If it was positive, she would have to raise the baby alone in her financial condition. But the baby would be the last remaining thing she had of Scaramouche's.
If it was negative, she wouldn't have to worry about raising a baby by herself. But then she would have nothing physical left of him with her.
She was beyond scared.
As she made her way to the alchemy lab in the Knights of Favonius Headquarters, she tried to not break down into tears. She was too prideful to let random passerby see her cry
Once she knocked on the door to the lab, Sucrose opened the door and let her in.
"Hello miss Mona, is there anything wrong?" Sucrose asked.
"Can you, uhh, please do a pregnancy test on me?"
"A pregnancy test?" the green-haired woman asked, blushing in embarrassment that she even knew how to do those. "Yes, of course, I can. Here, do your… business into this. Only fill it up halfway" Sucrose handed Mona a large beaker.
"I'll be right back."
In the bathroom, Mona stared at the large glass.
She was really about to pee in a beaker. What had her life come to?
After she got that done with peeing and washing her hands, she exited the bathroom and handed the halfway pee-filled beaker to sucrose.
"How long will it take to show the results?"
"Around two minutes," Sucrose quickly explained as she poured a clear liquid into the beaker. "It needs to be in the darkness so I'll place it inside a cabinet that doesn't let light in. Please sit down if you wish to."
Immediately, Mona shook her head. She was too restless to be able to sit down and stay still.
The longest two minutes of Mona passed before Sucrose spoke up again. "It should be ready."
As the alchemist took out the beaker from inside the cabinet, Mona took a look at the contents inside.
The liquid was now orange.
"What does orange mean?"
"Positive. Congratulations miss Mona, you're pregnant."
Shit.
This time, Mona took the seat offered two minutes earlier by Sucrose.
"Oh Archons, what am I gonna do?" Mona put her hands on her face. She felt completely helpless.
"Oh miss Mona! Do you not want the baby? I can give you an abortive po–"
"There is no need, I'm keeping the baby," Mona interrupted the nervous Sucrose as she made up her mind.
And with that Mona headed home and broke down into tears.
From now on she had to abdicate on only buying the expensive, top-quality astrology items and spreading out her spending if she wanted to be able to support the baby once they were born.
She wanted to be the best mother she could possibly be.
Eight months passed and Mona gave birth to a healthy baby girl who she decided to name Hoshiko. She felt like the name was fitting since it meant 'star child' and it honored the baby's Inazuman side.
"Welcome to the world, my little star," Mona whispered into her baby's head as she held her for the first time.
At that moment, in Inazuma, the Raiden Shogun's eyes widened.
She felt a new energy. It felt weirdly familiar but different at the same time. It was one of an infant and she knew exactly whose it was.
"The useless one has had a child," Baal said to Sara as she stared out the window of her quarters.
"The failed vessel?"
"Yes, he managed to knock up some woman in Mondstadt. I feel the energy of the child now that it has been born."
"Is it of any interest?" Sara asked.
Baal mused. The child must be special. A failed vessel and a human procreating? It was unheard of until now and Baal wanted to see the child for herself.
"Yes. I want to see if the child is completely human, like it's mother or if it is like it's father. However." Baal looked at Sara. "I will wait a few years to get it."
