Getting invited to formal events wasn't anything foreign to either of the organisations, be it to keep the peace, seal some deals, or try to trick them and ambush them. However, this time, it wasn't the latter option, at least not yet. After the final battle against the Guild, the truce somehow held on, and Sir Francis was well aware of that, and because of it not seeing the problem in inviting both the Port mafia and the Armed Detective Agency to the masquerade ball.
Both parties arrived pretty early, mingling in with the crowd of other rich people, some recognising them, some not. It was originally just supposed to be the upper positions of each organisation, but FItzgerald soon let up and let it become an event like any other. After all, they should be more keen to nodding to his requests if he complied to theirs, should they not?
The dresscode was simple: formal wear, and a mask. Everyone chose one that either fit their style perfectly, or really made them look unrecognizable. The probably only maskless person there was Edgar Allan Poe, muttering something about his hair covering his face perfectly anyway, and then scurrying away after noticing a familiar but unusual green gaze in the middle of the crowd.
Moments after the detective agency members arrived, they were all already running off by themselves, Kyouka getting whisked away to catch up with Kouyou near the drinks table, Ranpo wandering off in the direction in which the tall man with his raccoon companion ran off, Naomi trying to convince her brother into dancing with her, and Kunikida standing near the Director, checking his notebook constantly and writing something down once in a while.
And then there was Dazai.
Nobody was even sure if he came with them, with how late he was to the meet-up and how quickly he disappeared, but it wasn't like they were actively looking for him. Every second without having to save him from self-inflicted death was a nice second.
And maybe if they did look for him, they would notice that he's already at the bar, ordering a drink and subtly searching the ballroom for the only person he came to see here anyway. He got what he wished for only mere moments later, the sound of his glass of alcohol being put down on the bar overshadowed by the slam of a person sitting down angrily at his side.
"Playing Snow White again, are we? Was the punch you got last time not enough for you?" An angry quip came from the man next to him, but the brunet just smiled serenely and said "Hello, stranger."
"So that's how it is, huh? I save your ass so many times and suddenly we don't know each other? I swear I'll fucking kill you."
"Calm down. That is what we are here for tonight, is it not? Being strangers. No mafia, no detectives, just masked strangers. So what if I know the few inches of skin hidden underneath the mask? It's kind of poetic when you think about it." Dazai's voice came calmly, reaching slowly for his drink and looking over to the redhead for the first time that evening. So what if his breath got caught in his throat slightly when he saw him. That could just be his unusedness to the other actually wearing different clothes than usual. Absolutely logical reaction.
The redhead just sighed, but decided to play along. "Fine. Still doesn't explain why you came in the same clothes you got almost stabbed to death in, but whatever floats your boat, stranger" He hissed the last word out, and ran his eyes down the other's figure once more. He was in his white suit again, hair styled differently than usual, and his upper face shielded by a cleanly white mask. He smelled faintly of cologne, but nothing or noone else, which slightly pleased Chuuya. He was also pretty surprised that he couldn't see bandages anywhere. His sleeves reached down to his wrist this time, and his neck was bared, pale skin disappearing into his shirt without any gauze in the way. Either something was going to go horribly wrong, or he just decided to finally upgrade his style.
"Even though I'm very flattered by your attention, please stop staring, and drink up" The brunet said after a few moments, and only then Chuuya noticed that he ordered some wine for him. He was trying to get him drunk, wasn't he?
Contrary to popular belief, they never had anything between the two of them before, except for the "married couple" bickering sessions and talks that Dazai apparently hadn't meant as flirting. Chuuya has been pretty enamored with the other man for a long time now, but he decided that if the self proclaimed genius hasn't said anything about it yet, he probably knew and didn't care, or just overlooked it with everything else he overlooked on the redhead.
However, that was irrelevant as of now, the two getting to drink and chat together as strangers, as he claimed they were. The darker haired man kept getting slightly closer, leaning on his arm and using stupid words that raised stupid feelings in Chuuya's chest and stomach. He complimented his mask, the ribbon in his hair, the slightly darker version of his usual get-up, anything that got into his gaze's way. One more glass of wine, and the redhead has had enough.
"Come with me. Now." He said, extending his arm to the other man, who just blinked at him slowly, trying to figure out if they're going to fight, dance, or just go talk somewhere else. "Sure. Lead the way." He finally said, grabbing his hand lightly. Chuuya just smirked slightly at the acceptation, and started dragging him towards the elevator. He was never one for dancing in between so many people anyway, so skipping over that part, his next thought was a hotel room.
Dazai's eyes widened slightly at that, but he let himself be led into it, watching the door slowly close behind them with no other emotion in his face whatsoever. If it wasn't so usual, he'd have thought something was wrong.
Chuuya dug out the key from his pocket, thankful for accepting the whole overnight invitation, leading his ex-partner into the hotel room. He closed the door, and pressed the taller man against it, hands on his waist. He leaned in to kiss him, already abandoning whatever rules he had learnt that worked for one night stands, a hand reaching into the brown hair. The other froze slightly at the contact, as if he wasn't expecting it, but slowly kissed back, tilting his head.
They kissed like that for a while, masks making it the slightest bit difficult, but it definitely did not discourage them. They already managed to shed their overcoats, and made it over to the bed, Dazai pressed under him against the covers. However, there was something about his icy calm that unnerved Chuuya, so he stopped trying to kiss the teeth into his head for a few minutes, instead sitting up over him and resting a hand on his cheek.
"Masks off," He said, running his thumb over the edge of the brunet's mask. Said brunet slowly undid it, and so did the redhead right after. Under the mask was a familiar face, down to the detail of an empty, unimpressed gaze, that didn't match the shivers in his body at being touched at all. "All of them, Osamu." He continued, his voice soft, hand giving a light bop against his cheek.
The brunet slowly unraveled under him, his eyes growing wide at the use of his given name, and the rest of his face morphing into something on the edge of anxious and aroused. Huh, Chuuya thought. This is new, very new. Something was wrong, wasn't there? And he missed it the whole time like an idiot, because he was tipsy enough to let that go for some reason.
Maybe there was a problem with his approach, since the man was pretty enthusiastic about being near him, but they never talked about preferences and who'd top, and the whole thing was slightly rushed overall. Well then. "What do you want?" Excellent formulation, Chuuya. Really outdoing ourselves tonight, aren't we?
What he didn't expect was the meek response he got to that. "Yeah. About that. I... Don't know." "What do you mean you don't know, bastard? You've been trying to sleep with the whole city for years now. How can you not?" "I think this might be a good time to mention that you're the first man who I've let this close to me, and... Are you alright, Chuuya? You look like you've got a heart attack just now."
"Couldn't you have fucking mentioned that before we made out?!" He asked, feeling like he actually was undergoing a heart attack. He stole his first fucking kiss with a man. He's going to take his virginity in a sense. And the suicidal idiot didn't even have the thought to mention that he didn't know what he was doing.
"In my defense, I did not even realise I was into men until tonight, chibi." "That doesn't make it any fucking better!" It did, in fact, make Chuuya feel slightly better, since it meant he was the first object of Dazai's affections, but other than that, it was really not helping anything.
Their back and forth was cut short soon, by Dazai's hand tugging Chuuya's own against his chest, and mumbling "I hoped we could make a mess out of something else than our relationship tonight. Don't you agree, partner?" And that was apparently enough for Chuuya to listen, leaning back over him and getting back to kissing him like there's no tomorrow.
Slowly, clothes ended up in a heap on the floor, and the room filled with soft sounds of pleasure and the occasional swear that slipped from Chuuya's lips when the other's wandering hands ran over a sensitive spot. They went surprisingly carefully, their demeanor a stark contrast to their usual fighting and rough touches, if that's even the right word to call them.
When they both finished, it was like time froze, Chuuya's hips stuttering against the brunet's one last time, eliciting a shudder from him. It was the most movement he saw from him in the last few minutes, the other reaching his orgasm first and after that just falling slack, stamina clearly not being his strong point. It was no surprise, with how fragile the man actually was.
Chuuya looked him over once more, and decided to slide out and clean them off, letting the bastard rest properly for once. After he threw out the tissues he used, he decided to look for his cigarettes, knowing he had a pack hidden in his coat for 'emergency' use, but soon decided against it, because the other half of the bed looked much more inviting, and he wasn't in the mood to trigger a fire alarm, again.
So he curled up next to his ex-partner, throwing an arm around him to give him at least some kind of comfort and show him he hasn't been abandoned, but those were probably just thoughts he tried to convince himself of, rather than actually comforting the now sleeping man.
Morning came, and with it came the dread of being left once more, which soon stopped being just dread and became reality, because the lithe body that was in his arms just minutes ago was trying to wriggle free. "Stop that." He grumbled, pulling the other back further onto the bed, and when that didn't work, he just decided to sit on his lap once again, hands easily catching thin wrists and wrestling them down against the sheets. "I'm not gonna fucking murder you for staying, y'know?" 'in fact, I'd like it if you did' went unspoken, but it still was hanging in the air.
There was a beat of awkward silence, but soon, the detective's lip curled slightly upwards, and looking off into the room, he mumbled "You were good. Last night." Which made Chuuya's heart jump slightly, the same damned way yesterday's compliments did, and split his lips into a childish grin. Despite being an absolute asshole, he was one of the only people who could make the redhead smile as widely as he just did.
"But no matter how good you were, Chuuya still looks like a snapping turtle when he smiles! How sad." "Oi, asshat. That's your own damn fault." "So you're saying I'm the cause of your smile? How romantic, my petit mafia~" "God, you're so embarassing."
And just like that, the two of them fell into their usual banter, even though they were both still very much naked and barely awake.
