Work Text:

After the slime villain incident, it seems like Midoriya is getting bolder. Plans are made, groups are formed, it is time to put him back in his place.

Midoriya enters the classroom, eyes bright, with a small smile on his face, it is time. Ikeda Chikako gives a conspiratory nod to Sumiya Hiroki.

Sumiya uses his quirk, hair spikes, to grab Midoriya’s leg. He falls as expected, and the class laughs. They do not see Midoriya holding back his tears, before he composes himself and laughs.

The laughter dies down, leaving Midoriya the only one laughing. He stands and walks over to Sumiya with a casual smile on his face.

The room grows tense as Midoriya opens his mouth. “Wow, your quirk is really cool. You could use it like a grappling hook to help you get around, or a whip to contain villains very easily!” Eyes grow wide as Midoriya gets more into his analysis “Hair and nails are made out of the same thing, do you think you could harden your hair like nails? You could make impromptu weapons and tools so easily!”

Sumiya, now accustomed to Midoriya’s enthusiasm, goes to speak.

SLAM

Midoriya, leans on Sumiya’s desk with a wide smile on his face. “But all it takes to defeat you is a pair of scissors,” and with that Midoriya moves to his seat.

The class stays silent and tense for what feels like hours.

“Creepy, stalker bastard!” And just like that the tension is lifted replaced with laughter, teasing, and comments.

Midoriya sinks in on himself, for a moment, before taking a breath and smiling wide, eyes closed, forcing the class to fall silent again.

“Thank you.” Midoriya opens his eyes, forcing a silent challenge of dominance on the classmate to speak first. In this moment all the plans that had been made, went out the window.

Very few things were normal for that day, Bakugou was his usual self, ignoring the way Midoriya smiled at him, and their teachers were oblivious to the new dynamic forming in their classroom.

The next morning Midoriya sat down silently, pulled out a badly damaged notebook that few recognise, and began to write, muttering and humming quietly to himself, with a small smile on his face.

No one dared putting Midoriya in his place. Most of the time, aside from Midoriya, the class was silent. Occasionally whispering to people around them, always brief and wary.

Enter Bakugou Katsuki. Always loud, proud and angry.

The classroom door slams open, Midoriya stills, the rest of the class stare at the one who broke the tension, looks of awe and fear sprinkled through the class.

Bakugou looks around the class, glare hiding his concern and confusion. “What the fuck you extras looking at!?” The class jumps, keeping their eyes to themselves. “Hmmph.” Bakugou strides to his desk, but something catches his eye.

“Hah!” Bakugou snatches Midoriya’s notebook from his desk. “I thought I told you to give up. Stupid Deku, how the fuck is someone like you going to be able to become a hero! Bah! ‘Hero Analysis for the Future’, in what future can you even use this!?”

Before Bakugou can rip the notebook in two, Midoriya takes a breath to compose himself then speaks. “Hi Kacchan!” His smile wide, his voice almost sickly sweet. “Don’t worry, that’s not hero analysis anymore, it’s just analysis.” Midoriya’s smile widens, “After all, why only analyse heroes when there’s a world of minds and quirks to dissect.”

Midoriya takes his notebook back with ease. “Your quirk is quite interesting,” Midoriya’s eyes and smile turn sharp, “explosions made from your sweat.” He hums casually like he is not on thin ice with the strongest person in the room. “You can only make explosions from your hands, get rid of them and…” he gasps dramatically. “Why, without your hands, you’d be practically useless.”

The room tenses, looking to Bakugou to see his reaction. “Tch, so what I’ve got my hands!?” Small pops erupt from his hands, as if to prove his point.

Midoriya sighs and stands slowly “Yes,” he begins solemnly, “but with the way your quirk puts stress on your hands and shoulders you should be worried about losing them.”

The room seems to lose all air. Midoriya turns back towards the front of the class, “Of course there are easier ways of getting rid of you,” now in his seat he looks back at Bakugou with a wide smile on his face but the same sharp eyes as before. “Right Kacchan?”

Bakugou goes to his seat but keeps his eyes trained on his ex-friend.

The first half of the day is quiet. All the teachers take notice, after all why would their loud and proud star student suddenly be silent.

Over lunch a new plan is hatched, a more subtle plan but one of their last chances to return the proper hierarchy to the classroom.

The class is quiet while Midoriya writes in his notebook waiting for class to start. The class is on edge waiting for the cue.

Midoriya starts muttering quietly and sporadically. It takes a few minutes for the class to realise, by this time Midoriya is letting out a stream of mutterings quiet but picking up in volume.

“Oi!” A shout startles Midoriya out of his zone, Bakugou smirks. “Shut up stupid Deku, or are so dumb and useless that your brain can’t let you think silently!?” Giggles spread through the class.

Midoriya pauses, clearly in thought, before his eyes snap to Bakugous. Pencil in hand eyes bright with a sharp gleam and wide smile his mutterings and musings continue, louder and focused. And all too clear.

This was when the class learned to fear Midoriya Izuku, his bright eyes and wide smiles that hide so many secrets.
