What's in a Name

Summary:

Amity has long since gotten away from her mother, but there's some weight that can be carried beyond just distance and time. But of course, Luz is always there to help.

Notes:

Yooooo what's up everybody! I said I wanted to do more stuff and here I am only 9 days after the last thing I did! Now that's what I call progress! (it's those multichapters i swear) One shot central here we are! I came up with some dialogue last night while thinking about what name(s) a kid of Luz and Amity's would take and reaching one inevitable conclusion. Here's where that went. Hope you enjoy!

Also I there's a bit of context required for this to make sense. This fic is set many years in the future, the kids (including Luz) have graduated hexside, Luz has been living on the boiling isles, Amity’s gotten away from her parents, they’re all living fairly normal lives (as normal as the boiling isles gets) but the weight of their past still catches up to them sometimes. Work Text:

Luz and Amity were sitting together on her couch, Luz’ head resting on Amity’s shoulder, the two of them having spent what must have been a long time just taking the moments of peace and comfort in each other’s presence. As much as Luz loved getting into chaotic and risky adventures, there was something special about being able to waste away the day in the arms of her girlfriend. There was something amiss though, she could feel it, she turned her head up slightly to see Amity staring off distantly, a bothered look in her eyes.

“Hey, what’re you thinking about?”

Amity looked surprised for a moment, as she’d been so distracted she’d forgotten where she was at all, forgotten she wasn’t even alone. She opened her mouth, ready to answer, but seemed to change her mind, closing it and shaking her head.

“It’s... It’s not important.”

Luz, now definitely concerned, sat up and reached her hands towards Amity’s, holding her girlfriend’s hands gently in hers.

“Amity, I know something’s bothering you, you can talk to me. Whatever it is, it’s important.”

Amity took a deep breath and nodded.

“Okay, it’s just, well, it’s kind of silly. I was thinking about my name. I hate it.”

Now Luz was confused. This was the first she was hearing about anything like that. It didn’t seem like the kind of thing that would bother her this much.

“Amity? What’s wrong with that? I always thought it was cute.”

Amity blushed a little, still not used to being called cute despite the years that had gone by.

“What? No! I mean. Not that one. The other one. Blight. It’s such a violent, ugly name. And, sometimes, I feel like I can still feel my mother towering over me, telling me a Blight should be perfect, powerful, respected, feared, a Blight needs to be everything, and, well. Even now, even after so much has changed, I’m still Amity Blight. She’ll always have that over me, I’ll always Belong To Her.”

The last three words carried a serious, heavy weight to them. Luz had known, of course, how terrible Amity’s mother was, had always been, before and after she’d gotten to the isles. The thought of Amity still trapped in her mother’s grasp gave her chills. Is that how Amity felt all the time? Like her last name was some kind of brand from her mother? The very idea of it drove Luz crazy with anger, and, in her impulse, she came up with an idea.

“Well, What if you weren’t?”

Now it was Amity’s turn to be confused. She turned her head to face Luz fully, actually looking at her for the first time in the conversation.

“...What?”

“What if you *weren’t* Amity Blight?” Luz repeated “It’s just a name. Get rid of it.”

Amity seemed to think for a moment, tempted but still not sure.

“What would I even change it to?”

“Noceda.”

The answer came clear and immediate from Luz’ mouth, as if it was the simplest thing in the world. As far as she was concerned, in her brief moment of righteous fury at the woman who was still making her girlfriend miserable, it had been exactly that, the most obvious solution in the world. Saying it out loud however, she realized she may have bitten off a bit more than she originally intended to chew with that statement. Amity’s eyes grew wide, and time seemed to slow and stop around them, leaving just the two of them, alone, with the one word hanging in the air. Amity finally broke the silence.

“Luz, are you asking me to-”

“NO! I MEAN. YES?! I- WELL- YOU- UH- onlyifyouwanttobutithinkiwantyoutosopleasedo?”

Luz was entirely in full panic mode at this point. She cut off Amity, initially still too worried about how this all happened, and then she was afraid Amity would think she really meant no but she didn’t but if she didn’t mean no she realized that she did actually kind of mean yes, and maybe this was a pretty good way for this to turn out after all?

Or maybe not considering Amity was just staring at her, face unreadable to Luz and not saying anything. That. Wasn’t a good sign. Right? Just when Luz was seriously considering the pros and cons of turning herself invisible and run away forever never to show her face on any realm ever again, Amity finally seemed to process what had just happened, and she started to laugh. It was quiet and slow at first but it wasn’t long before her laughter echoed through the whole of the house the two sat in. Luz sat there patiently, but mostly just confused and slightly hopeful, until Amity had finally composed herself enough to brush the small tears from her eyes and say

“Yes! Yes of course I do.”

Luz let out a huge sigh of relief before pouting and crossing her arms.

“You didn’t have to laugh at me that was a very stressful situation you know.”

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry,” Luz was tempted to think the apologies seemed insincere, given the big grin still on Amity’s face, but seeing the person she loved most smile like that made her not entirely able to hold a grudge, “You were just so cute.”

Luz was still a little upset about that though.

“It wasn’t supposed to be cute! I was gonna be so romantic and composed and plan all this stuff and I was going to totally blow your mind and you would have thought I was so cool!”

There were, slight exaggerations there, after all she hadn’t really been actively planning to propose to Amity tonight, or any night in the near future really. But she’d be lying if she said she hadn’t been dreaming of what it would be like since their first grom. In none of the scenarios did it end up like this. Still though, that warm, comforting smile Amity was giving her now was better than anything out of any daydream.

“I already think you’re cool Luz.”

Now it was Luz who was blushing. She went to think up something equally sweet to say (not that it would be hard, she had a long list when it came to Amity) but stopped when a new grin from Amity replaced the old one.

“You know, the way you were freaking out there, it reminded me of the night we started dating, very romantic.”

Luz’ romantic compliments were caught in her throat as embarrassing memories of the worst tunnel of love ever made drove her to groan in shame and shove her face in a pillow. Lucky for Amity, it was with that very Luz reaction she was able to get away with letting go of the composure she’d been trying very desperately to keep up since Luz had accidentally stumbled over the question in the first place.

Amity Noceda. She liked the sound of that.
