Chapter Text
Baz
I know Snow has been avoiding Lady Ruth lately, and I understand why, even if its foolish. Snow has lost enough in this world to look any gift horse in the mouth. He’s waited his whole life for a family and now he’s screening his grandmothers calls.
I’m on my way to see her myself, without him, to try and apologize for my boyfriend ghosting his only flesh and blood.
“Basilton, what a lovey surprise!” She greets me at the door with one of her crushing hugs.
I smile at her and follow into the sitting room. She doesn’t sit, instead she scurries off to the kitchen to retrieve two massive slices of cake and a pot of tea.
I shift in my chair a bit. Its obvious who isn’t here with just the two of us sat here.
“How is my- Simon” She clears her throat.
“He’s doing well, got that job he was interviewing for”
She beams “I’m so glad, it’ll do him good to have work”
There’s a beat of silence.
“I’m sorry … that he’s not here” I say.
“No, you mustn’t apologize, I know its all too much for him”
I nod.
“I’ve been a bit much for him. I feel like I’ve been trying to make up for lost time like I can grandmother him for twenty years all at once”
Lady Ruth breaths a sigh and folds her hands in her lap.
“I think he just doesn’t want to do a bad job” I say.
“At being a grandson?”
I shrug, “Its certainly new to him”.
Lady Ruth huffs, looking irritated. I must look concerned as she snaps back to herself upon seeing my expression.
“Oh no, you have to understand I am not angry at him, I am angry at the bastard that made him feel he couldn’t be my grandson”
My favourite thing about Lady Ruth is that she hates The Mage as much as I do.
“Sorry for the language dear, that man brings it out in me”.
“I understand”
“I know you do, you love him so much, I can tell”
I try not to look away, but I know I’m blushing. I hunted with Simon last night. Lady Ruth just chuckles at me.
The rest of my visit is spent chatting about gossip around The Club and the families. The only hint of our earlier conversation is when I am headed out the door.
She hugs me tight, “Tell him he is always welcome here”
“I will” I assure her.
She waves at me from the door until I turn the corner.

Lady Ruth
My Simon, my grandson. How can I make you realise how much you are loved without overwhelming you? It overwhelms me. My child.
I would dig up the Mage and kill him again if I thought I could bring you peace. Basilton would help me with it.
I have waited a lifetime to be your grandmother but I will keep on waiting if that’s what you need. My child, my Lucy’s boy.
