Work Text:
There was a loud noise against the wall and Steve jumped to his feet. Somehow, even after all these years, loud noises still got to him.
They had decided to get separate rooms for the night, not knowing when they would get to have that luxury again. They may be good friends but everyone needs their space, once in a while. Especially when you're traveling 24/7 with the same people.
Nat had snuck out almost as soon as they arrived, not even bothering to tell them where she was going. Sam had hesitated for a bit longer. He did want to try and enjoy himself a little, but he was so exhausted. No exhausted enough to stay in though.
Steve was the only one who was hellbent on staying in. The need to find Bucky was making him crawl out of his skin, he felt both so close and so far to this goal.
So when that loud thud woke him up from a fitful sleep, he got up as quietly as he could and grabbed the shield from under the bed.
Jesus, Sam decides to go out one time and he gets in trouble. With a hand on the door handle, Steve stops dead in his track. That didn't sound like a fight. That sounded more like a... moan?
“Bed… Right now”
The walls are thin enough that he wouldn’t need his enhanced hearing to hear everything that’s happening in the room next door. But thanks to it he’s feeling a bit more pervy than he wanted to be. There’s the sound of bouncing bedsprings just before the moans start again, even ramping up if you ask him.
He can definitely recognize Sam’s voice in there, the way his voice grows deeper in pleasure. They’ve lived in close proximity for a couple of months now and, it’s not always easy to find intimacy. Sam probably forgot that the sound of water running in the shower doesn’t cover additional noises for Steve.
And although he can, weirdly, recognize Sam’s moans in that room. He’s confused about the second person. Because the second voice doesn’t sound like it belongs to a woman. It’s deep and Steve can’t help but think it sounds familiar in some way.
The other person moans again, his voice breaking on Sam’s name and yeah, that’s definitely another man in there. But that’s enough eavesdropping for one night so Steve digs out the headphones Nat lent him and puts on some music, hoping to distract himself from the noise.
He did not expect Sam to sleep with men. Steve knows that things have changed since the 40s, and he was never one to discriminate in any way but he feels a little bit hurt that Sam never felt like he could bring it up with Steve.
It’s not like they had a lot of time to talk about things like that, let alone date. But he just learned something big and important about one of his closest friends. Maybe he should make sure that Sam knows Steve doesn’t care and that he can talk to him about it. He lowers his eyes to the files he dropped on his bed. There’s an old photo of Bucky there, one of him in his WWII uniform. Steve can’t help but wonder what would have happened if they had been born years late.
His relationship with Bucky had always been intense, he never doubted that he loved him. He’s just starting to question if that love was entirely platonic. He always saw Bucky wining and dining girls all around town. What if they could have had a little more?
After an hour of committing these files to memories, and pondering on where Bucky could be. Steve takes the headphones off.
Bad decision. Apparently, Sam is still having a lot of fun on the other side of the wall.
“Oh god James you feel so good”
Well, at least one of them is having a good night.
He’s woken up a few hours later by the sound of a body hitting the floor. He’s up and running instantly, grabbing the gun on his bedside table. He knocks on Sam’s door, preparing to kick it off its hinges when it opens.
It was definitely a man with Sam last night, just not any man. Bucky is standing in the opening of the door, entirely naked without an ounce of shame. There’s a thin layer of sweat glistening on his skin, his metal hand pressed against the wall.
“Steve right?” He asks, his head cocking to the side like he’s confused.
“Buck?”
Did Sam find Bucky in the middle of the night? Did Sam bring Bucky back last night? Oh my god did Sam fuck Bucky?
“Sam’s a little bit busy right now. He’ll see you later.”
Bucky starts to close the door but Steve stops it.
“Wait Buck!”
But Sam’s head pop next to Bucky’s shoulder. Sam looks flushed, there’s a bite mark on his jaw and his pupils are blown.
“We’ll see you in the morning Steve”
And with these words, he pushes Steve away and closes the door on his face.
Needless to say, Steve has a harder time ignoring the moans and whines coming for the room next door for the rest of the night. Because apparently not only is Sam into men, he also has the stamina to keep up with a super-soldier.
The next morning, Natasha drags Steve to the car. Preventing him from waiting right in front of Sam’s room.
“Do you know who was in there with him last night?”
“Yes Steve I know, you’re not special I heard the show too” She snorts, delighted to see Steve’s reddening cheeks.
The door opens and Sam slides in the backseat, his sunglasses sitting snuggly on his face.
“Good morning”
“Good morning to you too” Nat purs, glee evident in her voice. There’s a second person following Sam in the car, his heavy body making the car bounce a little as he drops on the seat behind Nat. There’s a line of fading hickey’s on Bucky’s neck and Steve turns away quickly, clearing his throat awkwardly.
“Buck”
“Steve”
“Yeah yeah yeah, everyone knows each other. Nat, James says we should avoid the main road, there’s an old hydra base a couple of hours away from here if you want to have some fun”
“James?” She raises a brow, starting the car. Steve stays still in his seat, having a hard time realizing that his childhood best friend, the one he thought died and then spend the past few months trailing all over Europe is finally sitting so close to him. But Bucky’s not paying any attention to him. His eyes are stuck on Sam, who’s leaning toward Nat.
“Yeah, it gets him all hot and bothered” Sam chuckles and Bucky groans.
“I hate you Wilson”
“No you don’t”
