The First Morning

Summary:

Amity slept over the night her and Luz became girlfriends. Here's the next morning.

Work Text:

Last night had been… unbelievable. Like a dream.

Both in the sense that it had been magical and lovely and made her feel like she was floating, and in the sense that it was absolutely unfathomable. You know how dreams can be pretty incoherent, each point stringing along to the next in such a way that makes sense in the moment but, thinking back in the morning, follows no clear logical line of reasoning? Yeah. That's what the night before had been like. But still, by the end of everything, things had worked out in a way she could never have expected.

Luz wasn't sure she would have really believed it had all happened the way it did, not just existing in some hazy, fantastical dream world, if it were not for her waking up to see the girl who she had fallen head over heels for, who she was now officially dating, lying a few feet from her, eyes gently closed and lavender hair tossed messily across the pillow.

She sighed. Amity looked so peaceful, and Luz couldn't help admiring her at that moment. She seemed so soft. Just the fact that she was there, existing and breathing, her chest rising slowly and steadily up and down, and the fact that someone as amazing as her could be there next to her in that moment.

After a minute, Amity stirred and blinked her eyes slowly open.

"Good morning," she said sleepily, her eyes still half lidded as she gazed across at Luz.

The human grinned at the girl's voice. She couldn't help it. It sounded like honey and mint and the kind of clouds you would think you'd be able to ride on. She could listen to it forever, and when her voice wasn't actually speaking, Luz could still revel in the way it made her feel.

Still not having gotten a response, Amity propped herself up on her elbows. This time in a voice that conveyed she had woken up somewhat more, she asked, "What? What's that smile?"

"It's…" Was what she was about to say too cheesy? Last night, after everything had happened and Luz explained her reaction to The Tunnel Of Love, Amity had reassured her not to worry about ever coming across as too cheesy - in fact, that Amity liked that part of her. But still, Luz didn't want to mess this up. Looking at Amity now though, the way her head was tilted slightly to one side as she looked intently at Luz, she felt like it would be okay. "It's nice that your voice was the first thing I heard today."

Amity's eyes widened. She plummeted her face into the pillow quickly, but Luz could still see her face turning red. A muffled sentence came from the pillow.

"What?"

Amity turned so that she was lying on her side, her hands curled up by her head. Her smile went from ear to ear. "You're so cute."

Now, Luz felt a blush spread to her own cheeks. "Heh, thanks. You are, too."

A softer smile came to Amity's lips. "I can't believe that this is real."

"Me neither."

"Girlfriends." The word came from the witch's mouth the way one might say dreams or hope - with wonder and delight and a slight breathlessness.

A flurry of butterflies rose up in Luz's stomach and her smile widened. "Girlfriends."

She slid her hand slightly forward, subtly extending her pinky. Amity grabbed her hand with gentleness, and each girl felt their connection multiply a thousand fold. Each atom between them buzzed like millions of individual universes where equally as breathtaking moments were happening and making people float and hold their breath and have their hearts beat in their ears in the best possible way.

And to think this was only the first morning.
