“Uh, hi.” Leon smiled sheepishly as he approached Mokuba. “I’m here to apologize.”
“For what? Helping your brother overthrow my brother’s corporation, and by doing so also messing with anyone who was playing Duel Monsters?”
Leon fell silent, unsure what to respond. Mokuba was right, that was pretty much exactly what he had to apologize for, but worded like that, it sounded like an apology was not going to cut it. But what else could he do?
Mokuba shrugged. “Seto isn’t here right now, he’s in a meeting about increasing security for the database so it doesn’t happen again.”
“I see… Um, can I wait here?” Leon couldn’t meet Mokuba’s eyes. If their roles had been reversed, if Mokuba and Seto Kaiba had tried harming Zigfried’s company, how would he react? Would he be furious? Would he try to understand them?
“Sure, take a seat.” Mokuba didn’t seem too interested in Leon, but was that a good thing or not?
For a while, they sat in silence. Leon was stewing over what he was going to say, while Mokuba eagerly awaited his older brother’s return.
“Don’t worry about it too much,” Mokuba finally broke the silence.
“Huh?”
“About what happened. Seto’ll understand.” Leon looked up to see Mokuba smiling at him. “He once stole a card from an old man just so he would be the only one to own the Blue-Eyed White Dragon, so it’s not like he’s never done anything messed up. And that’s, uh, not even going into his first idea of an amusement park…”
Leon needed a few moments to wrap his head around that. “So… You think he won’t be angry?”
“Oh, he absolutely will be—you did try to destroy our company,” Mokuba answered. “But he’ll forgive you, I think. You only did it for your brother, right?”
“Yeah…” Leon looked down at the floor again. “Zigfried has his flaws, but…”
“But he’s your brother,” Mokuba finished the sentence. “I’ve been there, kind of.”
“With a brother who tends to be a little too invested in being the best?” Leon couldn’t help but grin a little.
Mokuba grinned back. “Yep. One could almost call it obsessed with beating Yugi. I’m cheering for him, of course, but it can be a little jarring.”
“Yugi really doesn’t strike me as someone who’d have such an intense rivalry… Let me guess, Yugi is nowhere near as interested in beating your brother as your brother is in beating him?” Leon moved seats so he sat closer to Mokuba.
“Pretty much. I think if you asked Yugi, he’d rather make friends.” Mokuba glanced at the door and smiled. “He’s still the best brother I could’ve wished for.”
Leon nodded. “Yeah. Zigfried’s not perfect, but I wouldn’t trade him for anything.”
“Mh-hm. So, what will you do after you’ve apologized?” Mokuba tilted his head to the side.
“Go back to Germany, probably.” Leon was almost a little sad about it; he’d never had many friends there, so he’d rather spend some more time with Yugi and the others.
“Wanna exchange emails?”
“Huh?”
Mokuba shrugged. “Well, it’s not every day you meet someone with a brother that similar—even if Seto’s still better—so it’d be a shame not to stay in contact.”
“Sure, I’d love to!” Leon took the paper Mokuba handed him and quickly scribbled down his email. “You know, this was probably the last thing I expected would help me find a friend.”
Mokuba laughed. “Well, neither did I, but here we are.” He glanced at the door again and sighed. “Seems like the meeting is going to take a while longer… Say, have you ever heard of Capsule Monster Chess?”
“I think so, but I don’t know much about it. Why?”
Mokuba rifled through his bag and pulled out a few capsules. “I’m nowhere near as good at Duel Monsters as my brother, so I doubt I’d win against you, but I am pretty good at Capsule Monsters. What do you say, up for a match?”
“Sure, if you explain to me how to play.”
Mokuba grinned and, since they didn’t have a table nearby, sat down on the floor. “All right. Prepare yourself, though. I’m not going to lose against an amateur.”
Leon sat down nearby. “Let’s see if you’re right,” he answered. “I’m pretty fast at picking things up.”
