Well Deserved

Summary:

(Alternatively titled Five Takes a Nap) Takes place directly after the season 2 finale. The Umbrella Academy has returned to 2019, but when do things ever work out for them? Ben is not dead, but not Ben, and they've been replaced by the Sparrow Academy. Despite all this, Five is tired and no one's going to stop him from some well-earned sleep.

Work Text:

“Shit.” That just about summed up the Umbrella Academy’s situation as they stared at their dead brother. But he wasn’t their Ben, the stranger in front of them glared at them with hostility and without any recognition. Above him, the members of the Sparrow Academy stepped out of the shadows. One of them had several scars across his face, which was stretched into a malicious grin. Next to him was a woman whose face was shadowed by a hood, barring her animalistic teeth. There was a tall man with a chiseled face, a woman with short curly hair and- a fucking cube? To the far left was a floating cube that glowed green. Add that to their shitty situation: they fucked up the timeline in the sixties, got unadopted, their dead brother was alive and a completely different person, and one of them got replaced by a floating cube. What else awaited them?

“Well?” Not-Ben prompted, narrowing his eyes, “Who are you assholes?” Luther and Diego opened their mouths, but were both cut off by Reginald before they could cut each other off, much to their annoyance.

“These are your predecessors, the Umbrella Academy, Number Two.” Number Two? Diego mouthed in disbelief. Not-Ben scoffed.

“We’ve heard much about you, Umbrella Academy,” He sneered, “You’re even more pathetic in person.”

“Oh go fuck yourself you emo wannabe!” Klaus shouted. “Didn’t you hear that My Chemical Romance broke up six years ago?!” Not-Ben scowled and a monstrous rumble started to hum through the room, a tell-tale sign that the Horror was about to be unleashed.

“Stand down.” A voice from upstairs commanded. Not-Ben turned to face the voice, which belonged to the man with the chiseled face.

“Stand down?” He implored. “These people have-”

“Do as your leader says, Number Two.” Reginald ordered. Not-Ben stared at him in disbelief.
“But-”

“Have you gone deaf boy?!” Reginald bellowed. Both the members of the Umbrella Academy and Sparrow Academy went rigid at the sharp tone. “I will not tell you again: do as you have been told!” Then, with steely eyes, he said, “Need you be reminded of your place, yet again, Number Two?”
Not-Ben glared at the Umbrella Academy before lowering his head and stepping back. “So,” Reginald turned to face the Umbrella Academy, “What brings my greatest failures to my feet?” They stared at each other helplessly.

“Well, we were trying to go back to our own time,” Luther said, “But clearly there’s been a mistake.” Diego scoffed.

“Wow, we’ve really done it this time, guys.” He turned back to Luther. “My bad, anything else you were gonna add?” Luther shrugged. Allison’s face morphed into horror.
“Oh my god,” She gasped, “Does this mean Claire doesn’t exist anymore?” Her siblings attempted to reassure her. Well, except Five.

“Of course not!”
“There’s still a chance.”
“Let’s hope for the best.”
“I’m sure she was still born!”
“Yeah, I’d say that’s pretty likely.” The others glared at Five. “What? There’s no use in getting her hopes up.” He pinched his nose. “Damn, I’m really eating my own words. “Wonder if it’s too late to be unadopted,” I said.” He threw his hands up. “Thanks universe.”

“Honestly, have any of us not thought of it before?” Klaus asked, prompting the others to nod and mutter in agreement.

“Well,” Five yawned as he stretched, “We have seriously screwed ourselves. But I am far too tired to deal with this latest clusterfuck, so I’m just gonna lay here for a while. That alright with everyone?” The Umbrella and Sparrow Academies alike voiced their protests as Five laid down on the sofa and fluffed up a pillow. “Great, thanks. Oh and try to wake me up and I’ll kill you.” With those last words he was fast asleep.

“Oh so now he chooses to sleep like a normal person?” Luther groaned.

“Uh, what do we do about them?” Vanya asked, glancing towards the Sparrow Academy.

“Very well.” Sir Reginald said. “You may stay here until your other member awakens, but then you must leave. Cause any tomfoolery and you will be forced out, death threat or not.” With that he turned on his heels and left, the Sparrow Academy following suit. Once again the Umbrella Academy turned to each other.

“Shit.”

Notes:

I came up with this idea several months ago and thought it was funny. After ignoring and forgetting about this story for nearly a year, I found it and decided to finish it. Given everything that Five did in the season 2 finale, I feel like it's not that big of a stretch.
Anyways, thanks for reading! This is my first time posting on here and my first time posting fanfic in many, many years. I have some other ideas that have been rattling around in my head, but we'll see if I get around to posting them!
Reviews and kudos are very appreciated!
