Work Text:
Kara smiled as she watched Barbara talk to Cass and Steph. She leaned on what had once been Barbara’s base of operations, the desk that held all of the information Barbara could possibly want. Her Oracle computer.
Kara turned to look up at the screens that still beamed with the logo of Delphi. She knew Barbara every now and then would take a break from Batgirl when she knew she was pushing herself and her body too hard.
She remembered the first time Clark had introduced her to Batgirl. That smile, the delight in her eyes as Kara explained her powers and what Argo City had been like. Eventually, after a breakup with Nightwing, Barbara had come to her and Kara had helped to heal her heart.
That was the first time she’d seen Barbara without the mask. Green eyes filled with tears, yet Kara couldn’t bring herself to look away. She could never look away from Barbara.
She hadn’t since.
With time, with patience, and with Kara’s love and support their relationship moved from friendship to love.
It hadn’t always been easy of course.
The Joker had made sure of that.
It had been hard for Kara to come to terms with the fact that she hadn’t been able to save Barbara. She hadn’t even been on Earth. She’d been at the Watchtower with Clark and neither had heard her.
It had been hard for Barbara to come to terms with the fact that Kara would love her no matter what. With or without the chair, she just wanted her to be happy.
And now they both were.
Kara watched as Steph laughed so hard the coke, she had been drinking sprayed out all over her as Barbara laughed harder. Cass was smiling as always, reaching into her pocket for a tissue to wipe her face and kiss her on the cheek.
She was happy for them. Happy they could be like this together, openly.
She hadn’t been afraid to tell Clark but she knew that Barbara was unsure. Even with Jim being the loving father he was, she was afraid she would have let him down, a part of him who had always imagined her with a husband.
Kara had beamed watching him pick Barbara up in a hug and ask her when Pride was. Kara and Barbara had a picture of them altogether, a rainbow painted on the grizzled Commissioner's cheek. Kara had laughed when she’d noticed Renee and Kate photobombing them in the background.
Quite honestly, Kara could do this all day. Watch Barbara. Watch her smile, watch her laugh.
Kara had seen the beauty of many worlds but nothing could compare to watching Barbara Gordon smile and laugh.
She watches as Barbara turns and aims that beautiful smile at her. Green eyes shining with love and mirth.
“You going to come and join us, Supergirl?” Barbara asks cheekily, as she leans back onto the couch, Cass and Steph both sat next to her.
“Refuse an invitation from Batgirl, I don’t think I could ever!” Kara grins back as she walks towards her, leaning down to press her lips against Barbara’s briefly. “I don’t think I ever have.”
“Nope, you’re too smart for that.” Barbara watches as Kara sits on the floor leaning up against the couch, giving her the opportunity to run her hands through long blonde hair.
“You’re darn right.” Kara replied as Steph snorted.
“Do you ever swear?” Steph asked as Cass shook her head.
“Only in stressful situations.” Kara replied quickly, using her hand to cover Barbara’s mouth. “And other occasions.”
“Good to know.” Steph smirked.
“Steph does too.” Cass suddenly blurted out, as Barbara began to laugh against Kara’s hand, and both blonde's blushed.
“I’m not quite sure how to reply so I’m choosing to ignore that information.” Supergirl released her hand wiping it on her trousers.
“I don’t know whether I should be hurt that you’re wiping your hand.” The redhead grinned as Kara rolled her eyes.
“You were licking my hand, Babs.” Kara pointed out. “Don’t you dare say anything else.”
“Wouldn’t dream of upsetting you.” Barbara replied smiling.
“So, when you guys gonna tie the knot?” Steph asked watching as both women blushed, Kara setting back on the floor.
“When are you?” Barbara shot back as Steph smirked.
“Whenever Cass asks.” Steph replied, not thinking about her reply as Cass’s eyes went wide.
“I don’t think Cass was aware of that.” Barbara said dryly as Steph shot round to face her.
“I don’t mean to pressure you, you know whenever you want to if you want to..” Steph trailed off.
“Of course I do.” Cass replied, blushing slightly. “I just want it to be at the right time.”
“Of course, of course.” Steph blushed, clearing her throat.
Barbara turned, smiling about to make another joke and her eyes went wide. Kara was down on one knee, a batman shirt, jeans, and her long hair flowing past her shoulders.
“I mean, I know this isn’t exactly the right moment but...” Kara smiled. “I’ve wanted to marry you since I watched Batgirl stand up to Superman and that was before I even knew who as under that mask.”
Kara moved to pull out the ring from her pocket, forgoing the fancy box, the ring was gold with an Emerald in the middle, surrounded by Sapphires.
“I’ve love you, I love you when you’re Oracle, when you’re Batgirl, when you’re Barbara, when you’re you, I love it when you eat the entire box of Mint Ice Cream and then get a headache and complain, I love it when you eat pizza and drop it down your suit.” Kara laughed as Barbara blushed. “I love you when you’re here for me when I miss Argo, when I mourn my parents, my aunt, when I mourn what I could have been for Clark but I’ve never been happier that I arrived late because I’ve got you.”
Kara took a breath and tried to prevent the tears from threatening to spill from her eyes.
“Barbara Joan Gordon, will you marry me?” Kara asked, eyes hopeful.
“Oh Kara, of course, I will,” Barbara said as she launched herself forward and wrapped her arms around her.
“Oh my gosh!” Steph squealed as she grabbed Cass and held her tight. “I’m so happy for you both!”
“I need to up my game.” Cass muttered as she felt Steph laugh against her.
“Your game is fine baby, I can wait.” Steph teased.
“Not too long.” Cass hinted as she looked at Kara and Barbara holding each other on the floor both happy, laughing and crying.
Joyful.
Kara was grateful as she held Barbara in her arms, the ring that had once been in her side draw, hidden from the all-seeing Oracle now on her ring finger. She looked down and smiled wider as Barbara looked up at her, beaming with happiness and love.
She really could do this all day, just stare at Barbara and watch her smile.
And now it was cemented, she would spend the rest of her life, watching her fiancée, eventually her wife, smile.
And Kara would do her best to always, make her smile.
