GOOD AFTERNOON
“Remind me again, Mr. Seymour, what exactly is its function?”
WU700’s eyes slid open, registering itself to be stood before two formerly dressed men in a well-lit office so sterile that one could see themselves reflected on practically every surface. The gentle splash of running water was observable in the background, offering a pleasant working atmosphere amidst the observable disarray which was the glass-top desk in the far corner.
“I’m glad you asked, Mr. Woodbeck, The warming unit is a pristine, state of the art android dedicated to sponsored expeditionists such as yourself; built for rescue, cataloguing and heat in extreme weather conditions. It took our technicians a long while to work out the kinks, but this android comes preloaded with academy-level expedition protocol and a life-like social relations programme.”
WU700 stared blankly ahead, remaining completely stationary as Mr.Seymour, a rather portly man possessing a lengthy, admittedly well-kept beard led his cohort to the machine. With utmost authority, the man spoke to the android. “State registered name, Model and Serial Number.”
Automatically, the androids lips curled upwards in an empty smile. “Hello. Model WU700 #907 236 119-71”
“Look to your left, what do you see?”
Turning to the left, it regarded a seating area of relatively exotic design - the seats were a shocking shade of lime which was so bright that it reflected off of the polished white floor and adjacent fountain. “A seating area surrounding a fountain.”
“And to your right?”
Turning to the right, the android faced a floor-length mirror. Reflected, WU700 could see that it was of average height and lean stature, hazel coloured hair reaching down to its mid back framing a round face and brown eyes. Its LED flickered blue as it took a second to register its appearance before noncommittally returning its attention to Mr.Seymour.
“A floor length mirror.”
Briefly satisfied with its answer, Mr. Seymour spun on his heel to face his cohort, who’s eyes twinkled in silent admiration as he gazed at the machine. After a moment, the latter nodded before gesturing at the spectacle before him. “This will do. This will do nicely.”
“Would you like to register its name, Mr.Woodbeck?”
At his question, the man nodded causing his shoulder-length, grey hair to sway in its ponytail behind him as he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his slender nose,
“Kimber. That’ll be her name.”
Mr. Seymour rose a brow in perplexity, studying the man before him. “An odd name, may I ask why?”
“What better name to give her than after the volcanic rock, Kimberlite?” Woodbeck answered with a hearty chuckle. “She heats up, does she not?”
At that, the newly-named android blinked, her eyes flitting non-committedly between the two men as they meandered over to the desk to eagerly complete an assortment of paperwork strewn over various articles of neighbouring furniture. Staying unnaturally still, Kimber consulted various databases for the previously mentioned volcanic rock, the most conclusive reading:
kimberlite
/ˈkɪmbəlʌɪt/
Noun Geology
a rare, blue-tinged, coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock sometimes containing diamonds, found in South Africa and Siberia.
The android compartmentalised this in her personal database before turning her attention back to the two men before her.
“Alright Kimber, initiate stasis.” Grunted Mr.Seymour, hastily handing over a document of ownership to his company.
“Certainly sir, goodnight.”
And with that, Kimber slid into a world of inaction for the first time.
