Work Text:

Dream was… conflicted, to say the least. They wanted to get better, yet nothing seemed to be working in their favour. Conventional training could only do so much, and it seemed there was only one option, but Dream wanted to make sure it was the best choice. So, they went to their coach, George. George was one of the best people Dream knew, who not only taught Dream everything he knew about football, (or soccer, as George would call it) but also became a friend, someone who Dream knew they could confide in, who they knew would always have their back.

Finding George in the locker room cleaning, Dream took a deep breath and walked inside.

George noticed him first, “Hey Dream! What’s up?” George was always an enthusiastic person, albeit a bit closed off, yet Dream could easily read George like an open book. They always noticed how whenever the two had a conversation, George’s accent became more prevalent than ever.

“Is something wrong? You look troubled.” This, however, meant that George could do the same thing to Dream, which didn’t exactly stay in Dream’s favour.

“Um, yeah, actually. I had a question to ask you, if you don’t mind?” Dream was apprehensive in asking, afraid of giving away too much and scaring George off.

“Oh, of course! What’s the matter?” George’s kindness was showing through once again, he really was an amazing person in Dream’s eyes.

Dream sighed. “I want to get better. I feel like I’m not doing good enough on the team and I’ve tried everything, from training with Sapnap and Punz for hours on end, practising drills over and over and over, I don’t feel anything is working. I don’t know what else I can do, and I feel like I only have one choice left, you see where I’m getting at? I just need a second opinion and-” Dream sighed once more, realizing they had started rambling and didn’t want to bore George.

Upon looking at their dearest friend, Dream could only see kindness and sympathy in George’s gaze. George kept his voice soft, the kindness emanating from his entire being. “You’re thinking of trying out steroids, correct?”

Dream nodded, allowing George to continue. “I’m grateful you trusted me enough to come talk to me about this. I have a story to tell about this one actually, come sit with me.” George smiled lightly towards his anxious companion, leading them towards the benches in the back of the room, allowing Dream to sit down before continuing.

“Back before I wasn’t a coach here, which was only a few years ago, I had a dear friend named Wilbur, though everyone called him Wil. He was one of the best players on our team, if not the best, and everyone loved him. He had enough friends to fill a party, a girlfriend who was captain of the cheerleading team, he essentially had it all. He always wanted more. He wanted to get better physically, since he felt he was at his peak everywhere else, so he started doing steroids. I’m not sure where he got them, though most people on our team suspected it was from someone named Quackity. And against all our thoughts, they worked, at least at the beginning. Wil got faster, stronger, more capable, and he began becoming the best player on the team, surpassing his older brother Techno by miles. It was almost… too good to be true, a fantasy that was bound to break. While he did achieve his goal of becoming better in the physical stance, his social status and mental well-being began crumbling. He started becoming distant, cold to the team members and the people he loved, lashing out at the people he was closest to, even going as far as to hitting his girlfriend, Sally, for making a mistake in her routine. It wasn’t good. Our coach eventually noticed, thank XD, and kicked Wil off of the team. Wil was pissed, which wasn’t a surprise, but it helped him get better, though he was never the same.”

George turned to look Dream in the eyes, he was dead serious. “Steroids, or any drug in general, aren’t good for anyone, all they do is harm. They harm your relationships, who trusts you, your mind, your body, everything. They’re not worth the risk. It’s not worth everything you’ve worked for.”

George looked at Dream with the utmost care, his eyes never leaving Dream’s careful gaze. He sounded serious and sincere, helping Dream believe he is telling nothing but the absolute truth.
Dream knew what to think about, and upon hearing George’s words, they made up their mind.

“Okay. Thank you, George, I truly mean it.” Dream smiled lightly towards their companion before standing and walking towards the door.

“Anytime Dream, it’s what I’m here for.” George smiled brightly towards Dream, the pure trust and adoration radiating off of him.

Dream walked out of the room, knowing they were making the right decision, their full trust in George to support them no matter what.
