Work Text:
The light interuppted Darrel's lovely sleep, waking up the man. He groaned quietly, looking at the clock. 8 A.M. ?! Panic struck him.
Ponyboy would be late to school- and him and Sodapop would both be late to work! Although he quickly calmed himself down by remembering it was the weekend, eliciting a relieved sigh from him. He and Soda wouldn't have work until later today, and of course, Pony didn't have school.
He pulled himself out of bed, not bothering to get properly dressed. His sweatpants would do just fine until later. Plus, he needed to make breakfast before it got too late.
Leaving his room, he noticed someone was already up cooking. From the sound and smell of sizzling and sausage. His assumption that it was one of his brother's was quickly debunked by the confusing fact both of them were sitting on the couch watching TV.
Curiously walking into the kitchen, Darry was shocked to see his friend, Two-Bit.
See, Two-Bit was notorious for being.. well, a lazy bum. He didn't have a job, was still a junior at 18, and most had assumed that he couldn't cook either. Which is why this came as a shock to Darrel. The food looked good, as well.
"That looks good, Two. Where'd you learn to cook like that? I ain't ever seen you cook before."
Caught off guard by Darry's sudden, deep voice, Two-Bit jumped a little. He quickly turned to look at Darry, making a concious attempt to not admire his friend's abs.
"My ma taught me. I'm actually real good at cookin', ya know?"
"I can tell now."
Darry leaned against the fridge, watching Two-Bit cook.
"You usually aren't up this early either. What's motivatin' you today?"
Two-Bit shrugged, a soft smile gracing his lips. Darry's heart sped up a little, and he smiled as well. Two-Bit's joy was contagious.
Two-Bit couldn't- well he could- but he wouldn't tell Darry his real reason. Frankly, it was embarrassing. And even more cheesy.
"Guess I'm just in a good mood. And you were still sleepin' when I got here. Decided to do you a favor. Cuz I'm your favorite."
At the last remark, Sodapop shouted a jokingly offended "Hey!" from the living room, earning a chuckle from Two-Bit.
Darry smiled, watching Two-Bit move as he finished up the cooking. He was rather clumsy, but Darry didn't mind. He found it cute.
Man, Two. You're real cute.
Darry was interuppted out of his thoughts by an awkward chuckle, along with Two-Bit's confused face looking at him.
"What?"
"What what?"
"You called me cute. Whaddya mean by what what?"
Darry's face grew red. He must have been thinking out loud. He couldn't help but notice Soda and Ponyboy very obviously eavesdropping, an interested look on their faces.
"I was kiddin'."
"Woah, didja hear that? THE Darrel Curtis can joke! He knows how to be funny!"
Two-Bit joked, the blush on the men's faces fading... Mostly. Darry rolled his eyes before spitting his own comeback.
"Keep that up and I'll make a real joke outta you."
"I'd like to see you try, big guy."
"I could take you and you know it."
A giggle escaped Two-Bit's lips.
"You could. Not in a fight though."
"Wh- huh- Hey! That is not what I meant and you know it!"
Sodapop interuppted their banter as him and Ponyboy walked into the kitchen to grab themselves a plate for breakfast.
"Gosh, get a room guys."
Pony held back a laugh at Soda's remark, not wanting to be involved in any conflict this would cause.
Darry's face reddened once again and he turned around to point a finger at Soda, making him put his hands up in fake surrender.
"Keep your mouth shut! I didn' ask you."
"Someone had to say it! The whole gang's caught on by now but you, Darry. I mean, Two so obviously-"
Now it was Two-Bit's turn to go red as he slapped a hand over Soda's mouth, giving him a smile. He turned Soda around and pushed him back out to the living room, making Soda stumble a bit.
"Thank you so much for your very much desired input, Soda! I'm sure Dar appreciates it a ton. How about you eat your breakfast now? I worked real hard on that, y'know?"
"Mhmm. Sure will."
Two-Bit sighed, hoping Darry was romantically dense enough to not catch on with what Sodapop was implying. He grabbed a plate and forks for both himself and Darry.
They both quietly put food on their plates before Darry finally spoke up.
"Uh, Two?"
"..Yeah?"
Darry paused for a few moments, gathering his words before looking over to Two-Bit. He flashed a soft smile.
"Wanna maybe.. go to the Nightly Double tonight? When I get off work?"
Two-Bit made eye contact with Darry before smiling as well. He sighed a little, tapping his fork against his plate.
"Yeah.. I'd like that."
