Chapter Text
You called with the news, I thought you were kidding
They stood over her dying, no dead body
Emilie Serenity Agreste
She had signed a DNR [do not resuscitate]
No matter how many orders Gabriel shouted at the passing nurses and doctors, none listened. They had tried to tell him he needed to respect his wife's wishes.
In the room stood
Adrian Agreste, Chloe Bourgeois, Natalie Sancoeur, Alexander Bourgeois, Audrey and Andre Bourgeois, the Gorilla [Henry], and of course Gabriel Agreste
Her machines were beeping and a doctor came and turned them off per Gabriel's order, one they could legally follow.
"Has it happened yet?"
Adrian asked while clinging to his father's hand
Natalie looked at Gabriel, who nodded
"I think it's better that he hears it from you,"
She responded
Gabriel bent down to his son's level
"Well, when you see her chest stop going up and down then-"
His voice broke
"Then she's gone,"
He finished, then stood upright
At 6:14 AM she took her first breath, and at 8:00 PM she breathed her last . She was gone. They started leaving the room one by one.
You were always joking all the time
She passed him in the hallways, he seemed happy
Or that's what he wanted them to think
You kept breathing but stopped living, held it like poison inside
Tomorrow was the anniversary of the death of his mother
They say everything happens for a reason
But it only makes you mad
'Cause how in the hell can you believe them
When nothing brings her back?
Some days were harder than some
It's hard to know (to know) what she would say
Especially mothers day
But I think she'd
Want you to live like the world's on fire
Want you to love like hearts don't break (don't break)
Nevеr look down when you walk the wire
Likе she made it to 48, still made your birthday cake
At the ceremony, they honored her, then had dinner
They all shared their memories of her
"I remember when I had to drive three hours to pick her up because she went to get your favorite pastries. She had walked there."
Audrey had said, directing it to Gabriel
"I remember when she dragged me along to help spy on you and Andre's date."
Gabriele followed with a chuckle
All the pictures on the same walls
Looks like she just went to the store
And when you look into the mirror
Does it make you miss her more?
By now, everyone was smiling or laughing.
There were pictures on the wall that dated back all the way to when she was 16.
Even then, when she was in the hospital, she looked the same. No, she didn't
Her silky soft hair fell out day to day, her beautiful smile was replaced with a fake one, one that was only there to prove she'd be okay even if she knew she wouldn't. Her skin turned pale, her bright green eyes were begging to be closed as soon as they were opened.
Win or lose, she was always on your side
Never missed a match
And when you see the moon
Do you remember?
Do you guys remember her?
They directed the question to Chloe and Adrian
After all
Adrian was only 8 and Chloe was 6
"She'd read me bedtime stories and take me on walks through the garden." "She'd ask about my day and she'd secretly buy me sweets when dad grounded me."
They all aw'd at the memory
Chloe, do you remember her?
She loved you there and back
It's hard to know (to know) what she would say (would say)
But I think she'd
Want you to live like the world's on fire
"No, sorry,"
She replied quietly
Want you to love like hearts don't break
Never look down when you walk the wire
Like she made it to 48, still made your birthday cake (cake)Oh-oh-oh
They adults had gone into another room leaving Chloe and Adrian
They went into his room
"You lied,"
He said to her unable to hold it in anymore
"What?"
(Want you to love)
Oh-oh-oh
(Want you to live, want you to love)Want you to live like the world's on fire
Want you to love like hearts don't break
Never look down when you walk the wire
Like she made it, she made it, oh-oh
“You remember her.” “How she picked you up from school when your parents couldn’t make it, how she called every night to make sure you were okay and told you-”
“-I love you,”
He said, looking in her eyes, never breaking contact
“I remember.” “I just don’t enjoy talking about it!”
said in a not-Chloe like tone
“Okay,”
“Do you think she’d want me to?”
She said softly
she sat on his couch
He went over and sat beside her
“Of course, she’d want you to.” “She loved when you spoke highly of her.”
They smiled, remembering the time Audrey got caught in traffic on her way to careers day and couldn’t make it in time, so she went and acted as a parent for Chloe.
“She kicked ass up there!”
She even represented Audrey. All the kids loved her
Want you to live like the world's on fire
Want you to love like hearts don't break
Never look down when you walk the wire
Like she made it to 48, still made your birthday cake
And at that time at 8:00 they lit a candle and by 6:14 the next morning it burned out
That night a dark but comforting presence loomed over Paris
