Work Text:

Ranboo anxiously ran to class. He had stopped in the front office to get directions to his 5th period class, and now he was worried he would be late. He flew down the hallway, stopping right in front of the class’ door. He paused for a moment, collecting himself and walked in, hanging back awkwardly by the door frame while scanning the room for a seat.

His eyes landed on a table near a window in the back, with one other kid about his age sitting there. The sun made their hair glisten. As Ranboo stared the kid’s head turned, The two’s eyes met. They waved. Ranboo cautiously walked over.

“Hello? “ he said.

“Hello!” the kid said. “Can I sit here?” “Uh Yeah. Go ahead.” “Cool. Thanks.” “Yeah, you're welcome. My name’s Tommy. I use He/they pronouns” he held out a hand. Ranboo shoke it. “My Name's Ranboo. I use He/Him.”

“you’re not from around here, are you Ranboo?” “You're right. What ever could have given it away?” He and Tommy made eye contact across the table. The sun shone over Tommy's head, nearly blinding Ranboo. The screech of someone's sneakers echoed through the hallway. The clock ticked on the wall.

“BWHAHAhaAhaHA,” a laugh ripped itself from Tommy’s mouth, Ranboo soon joining them. “I mean, It’s not like I have an accent or anything.” Ranboo said in between laughs. Tommy grinned.

The whole room quieted down. Tommy and Ranboo turned towards the front of the room. “I’m doing attendance.” their teacher announced “so when you hear your name, raise your hand.” Tommy started talking to Ranboo again, but Ranboo was also listening for his name. Except, he never heard it.

After roll call was over he debated what he should do for a moment. What if his name had been called, but he’d just been distracted? But he didn’t want his parents to get a call that he had been absent from class on the first day of school.

He walked to the teachers desk. “Hello?“ his teacher looked up. “Oh hello. Do you need something?” “yeah.. I didn’t hear you say my name?” “Sorry about that. What’s your name?” “Ranboo?” “you sure about that?” “uh- what?” the teacher laughed. “Nothing, you just seemed a bit unsure,” sensing Ranboo wouldn’t be understanding anytime soon, he moved on. “Anyways, let me see here. Ranboo, Ranboo, Ranboo, ah!” “what?” Ranboo said worriedly. “I seem to have found our issue.”

“You’re in the wrong class.”

‘I’m sorry. WHAT?!”

“Yes. you’re supposed to be in my 5th period class.”

“I’m aware.. What’s the problem?”

“This is 4th.”

–– —

“You’re in the wrong class,” “this is 4th,” the words bounced around Ranboo’s head, hitting with more force each time. He supposed it made sense, but it was very unfortunate because now he was sprinting down the hall for the second time that day. As he slipped into class just as the bell rang he let out a sigh of relief. He made it. But as he slipped into a seat in the back of class, he found himself thinking of blue eyes. He hoped that he would have another class with Tommy.

–– —

“Tommy?”

Ranboo had looked to the window table the moment he walked in the room again, for fifth this time, only.. Tommy was still there? He was focused on something outside the window, golden light streaming in back onto his face leaving only a silhouette against the light.

“Hey Tommy? Are you alright?”

He walked closer

“Tom?”

“AHHHHH”

Tommy jumped what felt like a foot in the air, and then turned to the side.
“Ranboo?” Ranboo waved awkwardly. “Hey…what’s up?” “uh,” “Sorry that I scared you. Are you okay?” “Yeah, yeah. I’m okay.” “cool..” Ranboo slid in next to Tommy and set his stuff on the ground.“Why are you still here?” “oh. I was in the wrong class too. Didn’t realize it until the end.” Tommy blushed, and tucked his head into his body a little bit.

Kids filled into class, and shrieks and screams echoed through the hallway. The bell rang. The faint noise of a bird chirping could be heard through the window. Tommy had still said nothing.

“Hey Ranboo?” Tommy said cautiously, cutting off any anxious thoughts Ranboo had just before they started. “What's up?” “Can I have your phone number?”
