Tales from the Deep

Summary:

In addition to chronicling his adventures as The Gentleman Pirate, Stede tasks Lucius with recording stories from the rest of the crew about the odd things they've seen at sea.

As Lucius finds out, 'odd' doesn't even begin to cover it.

Hello, dearest readers. My name is Lucius Spriggs, and I am the humble scribe aboard the Revenge. I have been tasked by my Captain  if you can call him that  to put into writing the many daring and dangerous journeys we will surely undertake in our time as a pirate crew. I’ve personally got fifty-fifty on him up and running after the first English warship, but who am I to judge? I’m more of a lover than a fighter myself.

In addition to my duties of transcribing our adventures, warts and all, he has asked me to collect stories from the other crewmates in order to “round out the book”. He wants stories about strange things they’ve seen at sea, or interesting people they’ve encountered. I don’t know where he expects to get this thing published. They don’t exactly accept manuscripts from criminals, far as I’m aware.

But it’s not like I’m going to say anything about that. This job is the cushiest posting I’ve ever seen. A weekly salary, a jam room, and nightly bedtime stories, all in exchange for my… writing a journal? It’d be a fool’s err to turn that down, even if the Captain is a bit of a ponce.

While I don’t think we’re going to have too many stories of our own fearsome exploits, I can’t deny that he’s onto something when it comes to collecting the mens’ stories. Every pirate’s got one - they saw a behemoth lurking beneath the waves, luring them in with a beautiful light and a siren’s song; the cook on their last ship always had fresh meat after one of their crewmates disappeared; they’ve cowered before a man completely ablaze with a lightless flame.

I think they’re mostly hogwash - I mean, a man set ablaze with a lightless flame? What’s that even supposed to mean? Fire gives off light, that’s kind of the whole point.

I can’t deny I’m curious, though. Even if it is all scary stories to tell in the dark, it’s still something worth recording. If I can collect enough of them, maybe the Captain can get that book deal after all. He’d better at least give me a cut of the profits.
