Chapter Text
VIP Floor, Seoul National University Hospital
Lee Seolhwa's shift for the day ended more than three hours ago, yet here she was, inside of a crowded operating room, supervising two senior surgeons as they work.
If she was to say so herself, she was not qualified to be overseeing two senior physicians who had more experience than her, but, unfortunately, as the head surgeon of the hospital, she was hastily called back by a hospital executive to perform a surgery for a VIP patient. At that time, she thought that for an executive to sound so hurried, the VIP Patient must be someone high ranking.
She was right.
As much as she tries to ignore it, through the glass window by the operating room's entrance, a line of bodyguards stood with fierce expressions on their faces. Their presence gave off pressure like no other, intimidating the surgical team inside the operating room.
For various reasons, mainly because of the patient's identity, the surgical team was tripled. The usual OR Personnel, an ER team, the Head Nurse as well as two senior surgeons and their assistant and the personal doctor of the patient.
The operating room was crowded.
The entire team was stiff and their eyes would often shift towards the window. They were nervous, scared under the threat of the consequences if the surgery failed, but as the elites of the hospital their hands never stopped moving for one second.
Moments later, the sound of the fourth bullet as it fell to the tray resonated softly, followed by several breaths of relief. Lee Seolhwa's stiff expression also loosened slightly.
Another hour passed and Lee Seolhwa finally came out of the OR followed by the surgical team. In the corner of her eyes, she saw more than a dozen or more guards in black loitering around the hallway, aside from the one's by the OR.
Occupied by her thoughts, she didn't notice that a teenager was sitting on one of the metal benches who had her own set of guards with her until the teen shot up from her seat and ran up to her.
"Is Yoo Joonghyuk oppa okay?" The blonde teen looked at her urgently. Lee Seolhwa was still out of it so she didn't notice that there was a trace of expectation in the teen's eyes.
She looked at the line of guards and saw that they didn't object, so she nodded with a calm smile.
This child should be a member of the family of the patient, Yoo Joonghyuk.
As a person in a position with enough power and influence, Yoo Joonghyuk was someone who was more than capable of destroying the current economic stability of the country with just a word. This kind of person, in other words, was a big shot. To be able to step foot on his exclusive floor freely should be enough reason for Lee Seolhwa to talk.
She assured the teen. "Yoo Joonghyuk-ssi is already out of danger but we still need to monitor him for the next twenty-four hours to make sure there are no complications. If there are no problems during the observation time then rest assured that he will be fine."
The teen let out an "Oh." as a reply and went silent. Lee Seolhwa couldn't figure out the teen's line of thought and bid the other goodbye seeing that she was not asking any more questions.
The teen, Shin Yoosoung, watched the white haired doctor leave with a blank expression. Her reddish brown eyes followed the doctor's leaving figure with an indecipherable glint in them.
She went into a secluded corner and dialed a number.
Four hours ago, Shin Yoosoung had a bad stomach ache in the middle of her night class and was sent to the hospital after vomiting her entire lunch. After getting some medications, she didn't want to be admitted, as they were about to leave, she heard a nurse talking about a VIP patient who had just been taken to the top floor. At first, she wasn't curious but after hearing that it might be someone from the Yoo family, she became interested.
She immediately went home and asked her parents about it.
It was Yoo Joonghyuk, someone Shin Yoosoung was very familiar with.
It was an attempt assassination that ended him up with four bullets deep in his body. He was bleeding so much and the bullets he was shot with were from high grade military guns with the highest fatality rate among all firearms. One shot and he was already at death's door standing by the entrance, much less three more. They couldn't even find the right blood type and the transfusion was delayed. The doctors' themselves weren't very optimistic about Yoo Joonghyuk's situation. They all though he was going die.
The man seemed very tenacious though and by some miracle, survived.
The teenager thought about the information from earlier and called the number again after a missed call. This time, after the second ring, the call was picked up.
The call connected and a languid and serpentine voice flowed through the speaker. The voice was quiet and low and the person on the other end spoke almost in a whisper. "What is it, Yoosoung-ie?"
Shin Yoosoung glanced at the bodyguards around her and whispered in disappointment. "He didn't die."
"That's disappointing." After a momentary pause, the person on the other end of the call spoke. Despite the words though, the voice doesn't sound disappointed at all.
What you can hear from his tone was only indifference. As if he really couldn't care less about the news. Shin Yoosoung bit her bottom lip and hesitated for a little while before finally asking, "Oppa, are you going back?"
There were some rustles that could be heard. The person on the other end didn't answer but Shin Yoosoung waited patiently.
After a few moments or so, she heard her oppa sigh.
His next words however, contained a trace of amusement. "My fiance is in a critical situation so of course, I need to be by his side."
Shin Yoosoung frowned in displeasure. "Oppa, you're really going back just for him?" She didn't really like Yoo Joonghyuk. In fact, she hates his guts.
The reason was simple. His oppa doesn't like Yoo Joonghyuk so she doesn't like him either.
"You know that's not the case, Yoosoung-ie."
Shin Yoosoung knows. As someone who grew up under Kim Dokja, she was very clear about her oppa's animosity towards Yoo Joonghyuk. The latter was ruthless and indifferent to anything and her oppa has been wanting to dump his ass for a long time now.
Circumstances, however, did not allow him to do so.
Kim Dokja, Shin Yoosoung's older brother, was the heir for the biggest underworld organization that controlled all major forces in the country's mafia world while Yoo Joonghyuk was the current head of the notorious Yoo Group, a large military conglomerate that monopolized the entire round table of the industry. The two of them, specifically their marriage agreement, was the tool that serves as a border for the two completely opposing factions.
The peace in the waters between this two factions was because of their marriage alliance.
Shin Yoosoung was aware of this. Although the peace was a superfluous one, it was still more than enough.
After talking a little more, she looked at the time and dropped the call.
She then proceeded to leave.
