Chapter 1: "Call me Ruby..."

Chapter Text

Emily laid still on the ground while they stood around her bleeding body. She’d heard a loud noise from the road and went over the hill to see if anyone needed help; imagine her surprise to see an old family friend being all cozy with some notorious criminals. Of course they shot her and of course the blonde was being super dramatic about this and making Stan kill her.

At least he was hesitating.

But she was getting bored. “Stan, I’m a little insulted that you have to debate so much over killing me.” She kicked the gun out of his hands and stood up. “Honestly, I never liked you that much. You were always a little too familiar with my family. But, I digress. Looks like my instincts were right.”

“What the hell?!” The blonde from before, the one in charge, stepped back with her hand on her holster. “How are you-”

“Shut it, blondie. I’ll get to you and your buddies in a minute. As for you, traitor -”

Blondie ??? Oh I will-”

Emily sharply turned her head, letting her eyes bleed full black. She tilted her head and the blonde’s gun went flying off into the desert. “I said, shut it. I’ll be with you in a minute.”

“What the fuck?! YOu can’t just-”

Another head tilt and blondie’s neck snapped. “It’s rude to interrupt,” Emily said to the corpse lying in a heap at her feet..

She turned back to Stan with a disappointed sigh. “You know, I try to be a good person. I help old ladies with their groceries and babysit the neighbors kids and arrange for food and water to be sent to the border for refugees. And what happens? Some asshole tries to kill me!” She huffed. “Honestly, it’s not like I wanted to see you doing your drugs or whatever. I was just out here, minding my own business, and I heard what sounded like a car crash. I went over the hill to see if anyone was hurt and now here we are.”

The other gang members wisely ran away, but she wasn’t concerned about them. Stan stepped back from her, horrified. “Who- What are you?”

“Finally asking the right questions, Stan.” Emily smiled and let her eyes fill with black once more. “I’m a demon, Lillith’s former apprentice to be exact. I’ve been hiding out in Emily’s body since she was a small child and her soul vacated the premises. You can call me ‘Ruby’ if you like. But nevermind all that.” She grabbed her phone from the sandy ground and dialed her husband back. “Right now, you’re going to confess to Cordell. You’re going to tell him that you not only are deep in the pockets of the NSN but that you attempted to kill a ranger’s wife. I’m sure that will go over well. And if you don’t, I’ll just possess you and do it for you. The choice is yours, but that confession is coming out of your mouth one way or another.” Not much of a choice but that was just the way the universe worked and the sooner he understood that, the better.

“I-I’ll do it,” he said with a trembling voice.

She smiled and let her eyes return to normal. “Good.” Just then Cordell picked up.

"Em? Is everything-"

"Cordi!" she wailed, immediately slipping into a damsel in distress persona. "I-I was- I heard a crash and I went to check a-and it was the North Side Nation! They tried to kill me!"

"What? Hang on, where are you?Are you-"

"I'm-I'm okay now." She sniffed and brought her voice down to a reasonable pitch. "A-And Stan was with them…."

"...What?" Cordell said after a moment, his voice hard.

She glared pointedly at the pathetic man in front of her, daring him to stay quiet. “I-It’s true,” Stan stammered. “I’ve been working with them for a couple years now; me and a few others. We hit a pothole on a drug run tonight and Emily saw…. I swear, it wasn’t my idea to shoot her. I never-”

“Save it for the record, Stan. I’m on my way. Em-”

“I’ll make sure he stays, honey. You be safe coming out here, okay?”

“Don’t worry about me. Just stay calm; I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“I know you will. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Emily hung up and her smile dissolved into a scowl and she clenched her fist, freezing Stan in his current position. “If you weren’t needed to weed out the rest of the lowlifes in this city, you’d be dead where you stand,” she growled. “But I’m happy to give my husband the biggest arrest of his career. Don’t make me regret it.”

Cordell, as she expected, made a flawless arrest. In a few weeks, Stan would testify against the agents of the North Side Nation in Austin and the Rangers could go in and start clearing them out. The good guys would win, the bad guys would take a hit, and everything was as it should be.

And if Cordell was especially gentle with her for the next month or so, concerned for his perfectly human wife’s delicate constitution, she wasn’t going to complain.

It’s not as if Stan could rat her out and ruin the perfectly normal and safe life she’d carved out for herself. And, honestly, after barely escaping the Winchesters all those years ago, Ruby deserved a win.
