Chapter Text
Yoongi has a hard time believing Jungkook was real.
And he doesn’t mean that in a good way.
They had been introduced in Namjoon’s living room, right before Yoongi and Namjoon were going to head to the studio for the day.
The boy nodded at him, an uninterested look on his face as he kept glancing over at Namjoon. Stature wise, Namjoon was taller, broader, and more assuming of space. Jungkook seemed to have more defined muscle, sure, but he looked small next to Namjoon with his shorter height and thin waist.
“This is Jungkook. He’s 21 and an alpha. He’s good at controlling his scent, though. It shouldn’t bother you.”
Yoongi glanced over at Jungkook, who ducked his head, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Hi.”
“Hi.” Yoongi replied back.
It only got less impressive as they traveled and Yoongi realized Jungkook acted his age. All it took was for Namjoon to chide Jungkook on his “shyness” and the younger alpha stuck out his tongue.
Yoongi couldn’t believe it.
This was Namjoon’s new bodyguard? The man meant to keep him safe?
Namjoon’s grandfather had passed away recently, and apparently the man was sitting on a fuckload of an inheritance that had been desired by most of his sons and grandsons.
And of course, finding out that your dearest grandfather, who you’ve worked day and night to impress, decided to leave all his wealth with a 24-year-old plant loving nerd with a passion for music, is pretty devastating, especially seeing as Namjoon abandoned the corporate life his grandfather loved to pursue music.
Devastating enough that Namjoon had received many threats from distant relatives.
But as Yoongi sees Jungkook, dressed in a hoodie and skinny jeans that show off his defined thigh muscles, he figures it’s a ploy. Namjoon was a lame pacifist, but Yoongi was sure he could probably defend himself better than this… this kid.
Jungkook is meant to look unassuming but safe, and the real bodyguard will be nearby to save them in time.
Yoongi takes in a breath, noting that he couldn’t smell Jungkook’s scent. But there was no trace of the chemicals that come with scent blockers.
He’s sure his weaker omegan senses just couldn’t pick up Jungkook’s faint trace, but the scent control is pretty good, he’ll give it that.
Yoongi just knows there’s something more to this whole ploy. Namjoon is an idiot, but he’s an intellectual idiot. He wouldn’t just trust some kid when his life could seriously be in danger.
He wouldn’t.
Namjoon absolutely would.
They travel down in the elevator, and Yoongi figures Jungkook might at least try to play the part of the bodyguard, but the kid really seems to be playing into the whole “unassuming” aspect of the disguise because he stands casually, hands in his hoodie, staring at Namjoon as if he’s got stars in his eyes, and even lets Namjoon walk out of the elevator first.
Yoongi almost screams. I could do a better job.
There were thankfully no gunmen outside, but Yoongi’s impression of Jungkook just gets worse and worse.
And then it never gets better.
Over the next few weeks, Jungkook trails them, usually dressed in a hoodie or plain white t-shirt, with ripped and/or skinny jeans. He seems to be enamored with Namjoon, engrossed in everything he says.
“Are you sure he’s a bodyguard?” he asks Namjoon one day, when they enter the studio and Jungkook is told to wait outside the studio room as usual.
“First of all, yes. And second of all, you shouldn’t say it with him this close. He might hear.”
“We’re in a music studio. The rooms are soundproof.”
“He’s a pure alpha. They’ve got even more sensitive hearing than usual.”
Yoongi rolls his eyes. “Are you sure he’s telling the truth about it all though? Look, Joon, the kid looks at you like you shitted the fucking stars out into the sky. How do we know he’s not just a dumb kid that lied about something to get closer to you?”
Namjoon doesn’t have something to say immediately, because it’s pretty undeniable: Jungkook almost definitely has a crush on Namjoon. Which is also very much not returned. It’s not the kid’s fault, Namjoon is just…hopelessly in love with a very handsome actor.
But to lie about security credentials just to get closer to his crush? Namjoon’s life is in danger. By some slight extension, Yoongi’s life may also be in danger, though it’s not like Jungkook seems to care. The alpha glances at Yoongi like one would swallow medicine: just as much is necessary.
He’s never been plain out rude, other than grunting when Yoongi tried to initiate conversation every once in a while. And he wouldn’t care if Jungkook was not talkative for the sake of focusing on his surroundings, but that was clearly not a problem if he’s got time to listen and gush to Namjoon about different things.
“I’ve seen his credentials, Yoongi. And Jin hyung’s dad recommended him to me.”
Yoongi sniffs. Namjoon would hire a 4-year-old as a bodyguard if Seokjin said he was “a prodigy.” That’s how far in love the idiot was, he would put himself in danger to make Seokjin feel useful.
But he would admit, Seokjin’s father was a wealthy CEO, and he even knew Namjoon’s grandfather. He wouldn’t recommend someone trash.
“How does he know about this kid? This feels a little suspicious.”
“He’s Jin-hyung’s ex.” Namjoon says, avoiding eye contact with Yoongi. It’s a smart move, given how Yoongi’s scent immediately spikes in disbelief.
“Seriously? What’s next? His dog groomer?” Namjoon starts reaching for his headphones to ignore Yoongi’s oncoming rant, but the omega hisses. Namjoon frowns but his hands stop inching towards the noise cancelling device.
“And you’re okay with this? Seokjin’s ex having a crush on you? While you…” Yoongi trails off when Namjoon shoots him a look, clearly holding the belief that the starstruck kid outside the door could hear them through soundproof walls.
Yoongi’s more skeptical.
“Jesus christ Namjoon, are you sure you wanted to be a producer and not a director? This love triangle feels pretty kdrama worthy.”
Namjoon finally reaches for his headphones, hearing the exasperation in Yoongi’s voice. “It’s not a love triangle. He’s Jin-hyung’s ex. So it’s just two line segments. Not a polygon. Just a bent line.”
Yoongi bangs his head on the desk. Namjoon slides a hand under his forehead to prevent Yoongi from giving himself a concussion because he’s infuriatingly caring like that.
So, yeah. Yoongi isn’t a fan of the new alpha. Namjoon seems to put up with it for the sake of keeping Seokjin’s recommendation around and also because the kid really liked him, and never cut off his nerd rants, which Namjoon really appreciates.
Yoongi wants to slap them both up the head.
No one needs to hear about whales for the 52nd time.
It’s hard to like Jungkook, especially when it constantly feels like he’s only listening to Namjoon because of his crush. The kid doesn’t seem to actually like the subjects.
Yoongi doesn’t keep nagging Namjoon about it though, since it seems like the threats were just that: threats. Nothing ever disturbed their life, and if Yoongi had to tag along with a hopeless baby alpha for a few more weeks, he’d deal with it.
Namjoon’s going to have his inheritance and property soon, and then Yoongi can ride to the studio with his best friend in peace.
So, needless to say, Yoongi wouldn’t say he’s attached to Jungkook.
The kid acts bratty and rather self-centered, paying attention to Namjoon in order to receive validation from the older alpha, but will ignore Yoongi, and when he meets them, Hoseok and Jimin because he doesn’t care for them.
Yoongi has wanted to suggest, on multiple occasions, that Jungkook try working the cash register at Taehyung’s store rather than get some cheap change guarding Namjoon, but for the sake of peace he restrains.
In the now seemingly unlikely event that something occurs, Yoongi would like for Jungkook to step up and live up to his bodyguard image so he and Namjoon can have time to get the hell out of dodge.
No hard feelings for the kid. Yoongi hopes he’d make it out safely. But if Jungkook’s going to claim to be a bodyguard, he’s going to have to deal with what they have to do.
But it fortunately works out uneventfully.
Namjoon’s case closes relatively quickly, and though the weeks fly by slowly, the nerd is eventually done with all of the legalities and closes down the case.
They go out for a celebratory dinner with the gang, Seokjin, Jimin, Taehyung, Hobi, Yoongi and the now-richer Namjoon. Namjoon pays, of course, and they order tons of soju, commemorating their now “secure future.”
It’s all in jest. They’ve all done really well in life in their relative paths, and even though his grandfather’s inheritance was massive and left Namjoon at a stage of wealth few people have seen, Namjoon was doing more than fine before that anyways.
“I hope Jungkook was helpful.” Seokjin says at some point, and the awkward pause that follows is broken with Jimin bursting into drunk laughter over a tumblr post on his phone.
Later that night, Namjoon reveals how much Jungkook got paid for his services.
Yoongi almost spits out his drink. “Jesus christ, what the fuck Namjoon?”
Namjoon shrugs. “We had agreed on it beforehand with his agency. Seokjin’s dad chipped in half of it, and I put in the other half.”
Yoongi feels an oncoming migraine. The 21 year old brat got paid a portion that would’ve eaten a giant chunk out of Namjoon’s inheritance had Seokjin’s generous father not helped (probably because he was very protective of his highly desired omega son and thought Namjoon was the best alpha available.)
Yoongi doesn’t even make that much in a year, and the kid got it for standing around for a few weeks.
“I need to get myself in this industry.” He says drunkenly, feeling a little pessimistic about his future. Maybe he should’ve worked out a little more. It’s clearly more about looking the part than being the part.
Taehyung pipes in. “That’s a lot of money. He was good, then?”
Yoongi wants to laugh, but he watches Namjoon with narrowed eyes. The alpha shifts awkwardly. Yoongi knows they’re thinking the same thing, but of course Namjoon is too good-natured to talk bad of someone even when they’re not there.
“Well, his agency is the best of the best. And nothing happened, so…” Namjoon takes a shot and shoves some fries into his mouth.
Taehyung hiccups. “I’m thinking of getting a bodyguard for a while.”
Everyone looks at him in concern. “Something happen, Taehyung?”
Taehyung stares at his cup, a little frustrated. Jimin reaches over and massages his shoulder. “The store has been getting some complaints, recently. Mostly homophobic.”
A grimace runs through everyone on the table.
“Well,” Yoongi says, “we can say for sure Jungkook’s not homophobic.”
“He’s not?” Taehyung asks, eyes wide and hopeful, and Yoongi regrets saying it. It’s too late and he’s too drunk to expertly evade the topic now, so he just chugs forward. “Seokjin’s ex.” He finishes, figuring Namjoon might not want to speak of the crush on him with Seokjin present.
Seokjin nods. “He’s great at his job. I’m telling you, those pure-blood alphas are just built different. And not just in the bedroom. He’s so good at playing a part you might even forget why he’s there or even whether he’s there.”
I wish I could forget he was there. Yoongi thinks, but he’s too lethargic to voice anymore sarcastic quips.
Taehyung does end up getting Jungkook.
The alpha now follows the omega around like a puppy, and Yoongi finds it odd to see his face more impassive than uninterested. He listens to Taehyung’s words with importance, enough that Taehyung is more than pleased with his new protective puppy, and gives Yoongi the slightest bit more respect than he had with Namjoon.
As for that, he no longer even looks at Namjoon. Long gone is the star struck Jungkook that would listen attentively to Namjoon go off on greenwashing.
It’s a lot better, if not a little suspicious that he lost the entire crush within the span of the five days between his job with Namjoon ending and with Taehyung starting.
Yoongi has to say, honestly, he doesn’t care as much as he did.
With Namjoon it was annoying because the guy was one of his closest friends that worked the same job as him, and they got lunch together often and even rode in Yoongi’s car on the way to the studio and back.
Yoongi doesn’t see Taehyung half as often, seeing as the man runs a fashion store and Yoongi prefers his large collection of sweaters and turtlenecks. They do meet frequently, and Jungkook will always be there, but he nods at Yoongi, is okay with staring at him for more than five seconds, and never seems to regard him with scorn.
His face is usually blank. His eyes flit around often, and Yoongi will say, even though Jungkook looks more like a nervous boyfriend meeting the parents for the first time rather than a bodyguard, it’s better than whatever the fuck it was with Namjoon.
He figures out what the change might be, though, when Taehyung and Jungkook start emerging out of janitor’s closets and bathrooms with their hair disheveled and clothes more wrinkled.
Well, to correct that: Taehyung’s hair gets ruffled and his clothes are usually messy, sometimes with an occasional suspicious stain. Jungkook almost always comes out as normal as usual, clothes maybe a little off but he wears them like that usually anyway.
“Did you literally just hire him to fuck him?” Hoseok asks at some point, getting tired of the constant sex between the two, both in public and constantly indoors, as evidenced by Taehyung’s odd moaning during calls at any time of the day.
Seriously. Whether it be at 5 am or 3 pm there has never been a time of day Yoongi has called where Taehyung didn’t make some suspicious noise.
“No,” Taehyung laughs, casting a glance at the alpha that sits next to him, entirely unbothered by the sexually implicating question, “that’s just a plus.”
Jungkook gives no facial reaction, which makes Taehyung pout a little bit but they jump into conversation again soon.
Yoongi will say, he likes that the alpha has no reaction rather than looking proud for scoring Taehyung.
Taehyung was a popular social butterfly, and it’d be an understatement to say he was heavily desired. Few alphas ever hit the mark, and Yoongi can’t think of any that had scored Taehyung so many times.
And yet Jungkook never acted cocky or proud, characteristics that radiated off him in waves when he was with Namjoon.
Yoongi’s not stupid enough to not recognize that the alpha had been acting with Namjoon by now. But given how genuine certain actions looked, Yoongi also knew that at least some of it was rooted in the alpha’s true personality.
Seokjin and Taehyung were two of the most good looking omegas Yoongi knew, and Jungkook had easily been with both. Add that to the enormous sums of money he gets per job plus his usual salary, Jungkook was living the dream.
Meanwhile, Yoongi was yet to find an alpha he’d like to settle down with. Originally he’d decided that while he didn’t think every relationship would end in marriage, he wanted to date someone with the intention of a long-term relationship, at the very least.
But as time stretched and he approached his 25th birthday, Yoongi figures just having a companion would be nice. He’s doing well in his career, great with his friends, has lots of disposable income and money saved up for emergencies, he’s doing great.
Just wants some hugs and knots. Preferably from a gentleman.
Yoongi wasn’t a cynic who thought all alphas were scorn-worthy, but he would say his general opinion of the average alpha before he got to know them was slightly below average.
Yoongi’s opinion of Jungkook’s gets slightly better until he shifts his attitude from ‘dislike’ to just ‘neutral’ in regards to the other.
That is, until Taehyung shows up to brunch at Jimin’s apartment drenched in a thick scent of dark chocolate and raindrops. The alpha who scented him was clearly lustful and longing and the scent didn’t hide anything.
It wasn’t Taehyung’s fault, really. Poor thing had just finished up a heat, and after a few days of mindless primal activity he was probably looking forward to interaction with someone other than his heat partner, and had forgotten to wash off the scent. Or maybe he wasn’t comfortable washing it off since he liked the safety it brought.
Whatever it was, it got every omega agitated. Namjoon, ever the calm alpha, didn’t care much, though Hoseok specifically was unhappy with Taehyung smelling so deeply of another alpha. Seokjin and Jimin were a little bothered, as they confirmed with Yoongi through shared eye-contact, but Seokjin reached over and burrowed into Namjoon’s shoulder, inhaling the coffee and pine scent of the alpha and sighing in relief. Jimin leaned closer to the calm alpha.
Yoongi didn’t have anyone to clear his own head, and Hoseok, silently turning something in his mind with a dark face wasn’t an option, and to make matters worse Taehyung sat next to him, grabbing Yoongi in his need for physical affection.
It was all fine until Taehyung started rubbing on Yoongi subconsciously, and the scent of some strange alpha hit Yoongi.
Seokjin eyes him worriedly, and Yoongi realizes his face must give him away. Despite how he’s usually unaffected by scents, this one in particular is so potent and strong despite coming from a secondary source, which suggests that it’s a strong alpha that left the scent.
A powerful alpha. A capable alpha. One that is interested. His omega supplies.
The alpha is, of course, not interested. He’s some random guy Taehyung found to fuck, but the lust is so strong in his scent Yoongi’s omega thinks it’s meant for him once it gets rubbed onto him, and in order to “please” such a good available alpha, his omega pushes him into a heat right then, two weeks early.
Taehyung gets the weird smell first, but it’s Seokjin who realizes what’s happening, sitting up. Everyone is on him to help in an instant, Hoseok the first to act before Jimin bats him away, reminding his naturally wired alpha instincts that an alpha’s scent will only aggravate the heat, which shouldn’t be done unless Hoseok plans on helping.
And though Yoongi’s still lucid, no one’s confident in him giving his consent since the first few drops of slick have left him.
“Shoot me,” Yoongi mutters lowly, letting Jimin walk him out the door, Hoseok following protectively at a distance, wanting to help his close friend but also get away from Taehyung and the strange alpha’s scent.
Yoongi ends up with an impromptu nest full of his favorite blankets and toys, and spends the next five days exhausting himself with his hands and cramping his wrists trying to shove different objects into him.
The scent of the alpha that caused the early heat is missing, a fact that drives him insane. He doesn’t dare touch his phone, not lucid enough to try and type any sort of request out and would probably break his phone.
Every orgasm is unsatisfying without it, though, and Yoongi can only curse the strange alpha in his head, despite not knowing who it was and them not knowing he got pushed into an impromptu heat, thinking of what he might have been like given his alluring scent.
Yoongi likes dark chocolate about as much as the next guy. It’s not his favorite candy or anything, but he’ll eat it any day. He likes it.
But shit, this scent makes him want to nothing but dark chocolate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, something he’d do if it weren’t for Jimin coming in to drop off stuff at Yoongi’s bedroom door to make sure he doesn’t starve.
After it’s all over, Yoongi learns that the scent he came to crave belonged to Jungkook.
That Jungkook, who apparently had huge amounts of scent control which is why Yoongi never knew about his scent beforehand.
Yoongi’s omega likes Jungkook a lot more after it matches a handsome face with a strong bloodline to the alluring scent.
Yoongi himself comes to hate him. It’s not technically Jungkook’s fault at all, but the situation is so embarrassing Yoongi can’t find it in him to do anything but despise the alpha so he can focus on something other than the humiliation.
It gets worse when the alpha gives him a card the next time they meet, and inside is nothing but the line:
I’m sorry for pushing you into an early heat.
Yoongi's cheeks burn as he reads it, quietly nodding as he tucks it into his bag and resists the urge to rip it in half and throw it in the poor alpha's impassive face. He does throw it away when he gets home. And later picks it up and places it on his desk because the card itself faintly smells of Jungkook from just the alpha’s touch.
The power of a pure blood alpha.
And this scent isn’t lustful or longing, it’s very neutral, to the point Yoongi thinks Jungkook might have intentionally left it on the card for him (an alpha with scent control that accidentally leaves a scent on a card apologizing for his scent? Yoongi thinks he has a right to be skeptical), which only strengthens the urge to throw it away, which Yoongi resists with a passion unknown to himself.
Instead, the card stays on his desk, enough that Yoongi can occasionally sniff it.
To be clear, neither he nor his omega like Jungkook overall. After the few days of cloudiness in his mind after the heat, his omega goes back to his normal behavior, especially disgusted that it found Jungkook’s scent on another omega, one that Jungkook continues fucking because of course, they’re a "thing."
Yoongi just keeps the card because the scent itself is nice. Nice enough that it relaxes him when he’s stressed.
He half wishes Jungkook had gone all the way and just given him a shirt to wear at home. Yoongi likes the feeling the scent gives him, of sitting on a porch with a box of dark chocolate while hearing the rain drops fall on the ground with small plops that leave an earthy smell.
The smell really does suit Jungkook, Yoongi thinks. Despite how the alpha had defined muscles, he was naturally slender and thin-waisted. Similar to his scent that was sweet in a dark way but also light and refreshing, unlike most alpha's musky smells of smoke or earth. The raindrops were small and light, packet-sized water droplets of something fresh and clean.
Small, is all Yoongi can think to describe the alpha, despite how he towered over Yoongi’s tiny stature easily.
It’s how the saying goes about first impressions: they last. And Yoongi’s mental image of tiny baby alpha Jungkook looking small next to Namjoon will have a hard time fading despite how much larger Jungkook starts looking next to Taehyung.
And even when he’s occasionally next to Yoongi.
Jungkook’s contract with Taehyung lasts much longer, and he slowly - ever so slowly – starts becoming part of their friend circle, sitting in on their brunches and celebrations quietly, occasionally piping in. Eventually Seokjin adds him directly to their group chat, most of them forget that Jungkook’s there to protect Taehyung, and he becomes a real part of the group.
He’s a lot less bratty, Yoongi finally surmises, much to his personal disappointment since Jungkook’s immature nature was something Yoongi picked on him mentally a lot.
Things start feeling a lot more like a normal.
For about 2 seconds, anyway.
