Carina’s POV
Carina stood holding the test, her eyes wide as she stared at the word ‘Pregnant’. A tear fell down her cheek as she proceeded to wash her hands, remaining silent as she looked at herself in the mirror- almost as if she was trying to wake herself up from the dream that was just created.
Reaching to stop the water, she gazed over to the pot next to the tap, which held a turquoise toothbrush. Maya’s toothbrush.
Looking up towards the mirror again, she was greeted with another shocked reflection but this one had been caused by a sudden realisation.
How do I tell Maya?
Carina had been overjoyed that Maya had changed her mind about wanting children, feeling that now, with her wife on board with the idea, she was that much closer to having all that she had ever wanted. Maya would have been enough, she was everything to Carina, but the OB knew that their relationship would be opened up into another dimension from the joy of having children. Despite this, and even with the constant reassurance that Maya gave her that she was being genuine about her excitement, Carina couldn’t help but question whether confirmation of these prospects would force Maya into panic-mode.
It’s not like she hadn’t thought about this yet. Carina had imagined Maya’s reactions to this news in every way possible- every emotion possible. At this point, she had to trust what her wife had been telling her-trust her excitement and her reassurance. And, if she was going to do that, Carina had to think of the best way to reveal this news.
With Maya away on a camping trip with the rest of Station 19, Carina had one day left to plan this-although it didn’t take her long and she had organised the reveal by the end of that Friday night. She had started joining Maya on these trips, although she didn’t think being in the woods would be practical during the beginning of this pregnancy process, especially because she would reach her maximum-irritation level on those trips, without being pumped full of hormones.
Conventionalism would say to sit on the kitchen island, waiting for Maya to walk through the front door and notice a small box, tied with a bow that would sit next to Carina and wait to be opened and reveal the positive pregnancy test. Carina knew that she wanted to be a little more creative with this reveal. The two wives had been through so much to reach this point it had to be special.
It was going to be special.
Maya’s POV
Maya lugged her camping bag into the trunk of her car and closed the door with a huff. She loved camping with the team, but she would always return super tired because her anxiety would leave her on high-alert the entire time. She opened her front door and got into the car, when her phone buzzed. A text from her wife appeared on the screen
Text me when you’re setting off Bambina, I’ve missed you , il mio amore.
A smile grew on Maya’s face, she had definitely missed her wife too. She always did. It was like she wouldn’t be whole again until she walked through her front door and closed it behind her, leaving just her and her wife to be content, together. Quickly replying, Maya turned on the engine and began to pull out of the station car park. She was slightly confused because she had already informed her wife that she would be home around 4pm in an earlier phone call, although she just assumed that Carina wanted to get her timings correct on the meal that she was likely preparing, like the Italian goddess she was.
Upon entering the apartment, Maya was greeted by a familiar smell and she knew that Carina had cooked up a storm, as expected. She threw her bag down and took off her shoes, hanging her coat up with a smile as she heard that sweet sound of her wife’s voice and felt her hands around her waist.
‘Ciao bambina’ Carina whispered into Maya’s ear, placing a soft kiss on her neck.
Maya quickly turned her body, wrapping her own hands around Carina’s waist and pulling her in for a more heated kiss, fuelled by the fact that they had been apart for what seemed like a lifetime but it was actually about two days.
‘You smell delightful’ Maya replied, her lips still touching Carina’s as their foreheads remained in contact.
‘That’s the food, bella’ Carina turned with a smirk and let go of Maya’s hand- they had both automatically grabbed hold of each other in the greeting. ‘Get a shower, it will be ready in 15 minutes!’
Maya had planned on the shower after her long weekend, but was slightly concerned by the speed in which Carina had returned to the kitchen. It was almost as if she was preoccupied with something, enough to ignore the fact that the two had been apart. They could definitely benefit from some quality time with everything going on. Maya shrugged it off, knowing that she was prone to overthinking and headed to the shower.
Right on time, Maya returned to her wife as she was placing Maya’s food in her usual spot on the dining table. Grabbing hold of Carina, Maya had developed a different type of appetite and began to tear the robe that her wife was wearing from her shoulders. Carina abruptly ended their kiss, quickly tying her robe back up and Maya turned her head with a furrowed brow.
‘Not yet Bambina- eat!’ Carina smiled, although it seemed slightly nervous.
‘That was my plan’ Maya huffed under her breath, in a slightly stroppy tone, pulling her chair out and sitting down.
Carina smiled and pointed at Maya, making direct eye contact with her before pointing to the pasta in front of her and then to her mouth- suggesting that she shut up and eat the meal prepared in front of her.
‘Okay, okay’ Maya held her hands up with a smirk.
The two enjoyed a lovely meal, mainly talking about Maya’s trip whilst playing footsie under the table. Maya noticed that Carina was more quiet than usual and this helped her earlier worries to grow a little, so she planned to continue the rest of the night cautious of her wife’s emotions.
After cleaning up, the two sat on the couch and they were quick to begin a night of affection with soft kisses as Maya lay flat, with Carina resting over the top of her. Again, Maya started to undress her wife but Carina again stopped this from happening.
The doctor sat up, straddling her wife and placed a kiss on her nose.
‘I have to tell you something’ Carina whispered
Maya’s face was confused, her hand’s resting on her hand’s thighs, caressing them as she remained with a furrowed brow. ‘What is it, babe?’
‘Undress me, bambina’ , Carina gulped and moved back a little, leaving enough room for Maya’s hands to sit on her waist and eventually rid her of the satin gown that she was wearing, to reveal a surprise underneath.
Now Maya was confused. She had picked up on Carina’s nerves and was worried about her odd behaviour and now she may finally get an explanation, it was being interrupted by the opportunity she had been waiting for when entering the apartment all of those hours previously. Despite this, Maya knew that Carina should always get what she wanted and she was not going to dismiss her wishes to make herself feel better.
She looked up into Carina’s eyes with a smile. ‘With pleasure’ she replied, pulling Carina in for a final kiss before taking her hand to her waist, ready to pull on the tie of her robe. Carina grabbed her wrists- ‘Slowly’ she explained quietly… ‘With your eyes closed’. Their foreheads met again as she spoke in a hushed tone. Maya just wanted to do everything that she was telling her.
She closed her eyes pulling at the bow of her robe delicately and taking it from her shoulders. ‘Keep your eyes closed,’ Carina whispered, as Maya felt her throw it onto the floor. Then, Carina planted slow kisses all over Maya’s face, neck and upper body and chest, before sitting up and uttering those beautiful words, which were now familiar to Maya- ‘Ti amo tanto, piccola’.
‘I love you too, Carina’. Maya felt her wife’s hands grab hold of hers, which were still resting on her thighs.
‘Maya’ Carina whispered with a broken voice. ‘Open your eyes, Bella’.
Maya did so slowly, and then became fixated on the tshirt Carina had clearly been hiding under her robe. On it was a message in red writing, surrounded by cartoon flames. The message was located on Carina’s belly- an ordinarily peculiar place for a tshirt, but there was a reason for this placement.
Maya’s eyes widened at the message looking up into Carina’s, whose face was only focused on her wife’s reaction. The firefighter’s mouth dropped open and her eyes glazed over. She moved her eyes to the message again and fixated on the words.
‘Future Firefighter’.
