Chapter 1: Coffee Shop Muse

Chapter Text

Beryl sits in a quiet corner of a coffee shop with a sketch pad and assorted pens sitting in front of her. An empty coffee cup sits on the edge of the wooden table, forgotten in the mental mess that is happening inside Beryl’s mind. She has two assignments due in an art class the upcoming week that haven’t even been started.

Beryl would much rather be getting some much needed rest. Except she isn’t entirely frustrated at the current situation because of the energetic barista manning the espresso machine. Kick has always been kind to Beryl, sometimes asking about whatever project she happens to be working on. Beryl wouldn’t admit it out loud, but she has developed a bit of a crush on the girl that always seems to be flipping straws and cans of whipped cream in the air.

The coffee shop was mostly empty at this point of the night. Only 1 other patron occupied a table under the soft, warm lighting, and 2 barista stood behind the counter.

Kick walked over to Beryl’s table with a fresh cup of coffee in her hand. “You look like you could use this.”

“Yea. At this rate, I’m gonna be here until sunrise.” Beryl sighed and tried to laugh. Kick set the cup down next to the other and sat down across the table.

“Maybe you just need a new muse.”

“Are you volunteering?” Beryl slapped a hand over her mouth as her face flushed. She didn’t know where she got the gumption to say such a thing in front of someone, anyone. Let alone her crush.

“And if I am?” Kick exploded laughing. Beryl tilted her face down to the fresh cup of coffee. She stirred the dark liquid with the spoon, trying to hide her heated checks from Kick. ”Come on. I didn’t mean to embarrass you. Just trying to lighten the tension.”

Beryl took a deep breath and looked up. “Thanks. For the, uh, coffee…. And stuff.”

“The things I’m best at. Coffee and stuff.” Kick and Beryl laughed together.
