Work Text:
It was a rainy night, hot and humid with rolling thunder showers.
Mako and Bolin had bailed on fancy dinner night due to an apparent sudden water leak from the apartment above them.
Meaning it was just her and Asami.
She’d assumed that Asami would also bail. They hung out a few nights a week anyway and went on runs together on the weekend and the days they didn’t have morning classes. So they spent a significant amount of time together already.
Mako had kept the two of them apart originally thinking they’d hate each other.
Except Asami was great! And Korra really fucking liked her. Mako literally had no idea how women worked apparently.
And Asami really seemed to like her too. She’d always wrapped her arm around her when they were out walking together. Or always bring her favorite muffin before they’d all have their awful 8 AM class three times a week. They’d always sit next to each other and she’d lean in close to her ear to gossip while the professor droned on for entirely too long.
She’d hug her so tight whenever they split up after class or from a group hang out and kiss her on the cheek as they parted.
Plus they texted nearly every night, talking through homework or whatever was annoying them that day. And probably anything else that came to mind.
Korra had literally never had a friend as comfortable with her as Asami. It was so refreshing.
She sat on the covered steps of her apartment building waiting for Asami to show up in her nicest button up baby blue shirt and black skinny jeans. She hadn’t heard from her in a little while since she’d confirmed she was still showing up.
The rain was steadily coming down just in front of her when she heard her phone beep.
Asami’s ringtone.
But she didn’t see her pull up at all. She pulled out her phone to check.
Hey I’ll be a few minutes late, accident a few minutes away. Stay out of the rain cutie, I know for a fact you’re already outside waiting.
Xoxo Asami
Korra rolled her eyes, was she too predictable? She scooted back a bit so none of the rain would hit her and started mindlessly scrolling through her phone for a few minutes.
She was so engrossed in a stupid ball throwing game that she didn’t even notice Asami pull up until she honked at her, startling her into almost dropping her phone.
She stood quickly and ran out to the car, jumping in as fast as she could, but she couldn’t avoid getting the seat just a tiny bit wet. Asami laughed at her and clicked the heated seat button for her side and started driving again.
“So where are we going anyway? I hope this was fancy enough? I don’t really have many fancy clothes…”
Asami glanced over as she started to drive again, “You’re perfect darling, it’s private booths anyway. I was just happy to have gotten us a spot at the last minute.”
Korra cocked her head to the side, “But we’ve had a fancy dinner night planned for like two weeks?”
Asami’s face reddened just slightly, “Oh um. When the boys called to say they weren’t gonna make it I canceled our other reservation and got another one. One I thought you’d like more. A lot more Water tribe food available than the fire nation place we were originally going to go to.”
“Oh! God Asami you’re so perfect. I do love fire nation food but fuck I’d been craving food from home.”
“You’d mentioned it the other day so I wanted to make it happen.”
They were being led into the fanciest restaurant Korra had ever seen.
How in the fuck they were going to go halfies on this she had no idea. Then when they finally sat down and were given menus there were no prices on anything. She waited until the server was gone and hid her face with the menu to talk to Asami.
“Asami there aren’t any prices on this menu, there’s absolutely no way I can afford this place. We gotta split before we get charged for even being in here.”
Asami waved her off, “Don’t worry, I’ve got it.”
Korra pouted, “That’s not how fancy dinner night goes Sams, everyone pays.”
Asami set down her menu and put her chin in her hand, “Except it’s just the two of us, and I changed it to somewhere much more expensive. Don’t worry about it. I want to treat you, let me for once.”
Korra looked at her menu, then at Asami, then at the menu again. “…Fine. But only this one time.”
Dropping Korra back off at her apartment was always the worst part. She’d always lean over, hug her, kiss her softly just below her ear, which always made Korra hold her tighter, then she’d seemingly reluctantly leave and make her way inside. She’d wait outside until Korra sent her a ‘made it into the apartment’ text then bang her head on the steering wheel half a dozen times and finally drive off.
Once, JUST ONCE, she wanted Korra to finally take a hint and actually notice that they were practically already dating.
She thought that maybe when Korra hadn’t canceled when Asami had bribed the boys to stay home for the night it was finally her chance but Korra hadn’t done anything different from their usual.
When she pulled into her driveway she got a text from Bolin asking to FaceTime. She didn’t even have a chance to answer before he was calling her.
“I literally haven’t even been able to get out of my car Bo. What?”
“You’re not in Korra’s bed? What the heck Asami! I thought that was the whole point to this! Wait, she didn’t reject you did she?”
She groaned and leaned back in the seat, “No? Yes? I dunno! I didn’t ask her, I thought maybe she’d just get it. What am I doing wrong here?!”
“Mmmm I dunno, Korra can be dumb as shit sometimes. She did date my brother.” There was an incoherent yell from the background, “Don’t listen to my conversations Mako! I’m trying to get my favorite people together, let me encourage my bi’s Mako!” The phone screen went black for a second and she could only hear the sound of a door closing for a second. “Sorry Sami, Mako was listening in when he shouldn’t have been. Now what are we doing to get her attention now?”
“Ugh Bo, maybe I should just give up. Maybe she doesn’t like me at all.”
He shook his head wildly, “No no! She definitely does! She’s mentioned you being way out of her league and that she doesn’t think she’d ever get a chance to be with you.”
“Bo! What the fuck! Why haven’t you told me this before? Fuck you I’m driving back to her place. I’ll text you later when I have a girlfriend.”
It’d started raining hard again by the time she got to Korra’s building again. She fiddled with her copy of Korra’s outside door key, getting drenched since she only had the key to the door that didn’t have an overhang. She made a noise of happiness when it finally clicked open and she rushed over to the elevator. It took a minute and took an even longer minute to get up to Korra’s 6th floor apartment.
She walked out of the elevator and towards Korra’s door quickly. She rounded the corner only to see Korra being pinned against her door by a hand next to her face and her upstairs neighbor kissing her deeply. They locked eyes for a second.
She froze in place.
Korra shoved her neighbor off her. “Asami! Hey! What are you doing here?”
She couldn’t move, something was gonna snap in her soon. Either she was gonna run or punch this woman in the face.
Korra walked up to her quickly, pulling her face down to look at her, “It’s not what it looks like babe, I swear. I’ll explain, come in.” She turned towards her neighbor, all the while grabbing Asami’s hand, “As I was saying, I have a girlfriend and I’d really appreciate it if you wouldn’t do shit like that.”
The woman held her hands up and started walking away towards the other elevator. When she rounded the corner Korra melted into Asami. “Fuck I’m sorry. She hasn’t been getting the hint at all lately. That’s the second time that’s happened, only this time was the only time it actually happened. I don’t know why you came back but I’m so fucking glad you did.”
She pulled Korra closer to her, “Let’s go inside.”
Korra gave her the thickest fluffiest towel, Korra’s personal favorite, for her hair and took her jacket to throw in the dryer for a little while.
“So did I forget something in your car?”
Asami shook her head, “What was that? You said it was the second time she’s tried to do that?”
Korra sat on the coffee table in front of her, elbows on her knees, head in her hands. “Yeah, I told her I had a girlfriend but she didn’t really get the hint. It was just luck that you showed up. Hopefully that’ll do it. Sooooooo come on! You’ve never just shown up to my place without saying you were gonna be here. Tell me!”
Asami mumbled out her reply, “How would you feel about having a girlfriend for real?”
Korra made a face at her, “What was that?”
Asami slapped the towel on the open couch next to her, “Girlfriend! Be my girlfriend you dumbass. I’ve been dropping hints for weeks and you haven’t seemed to get a single one of them!”
Korra reeled back, flabbergasted. “What! What do you mean?!”
“I fucking kiss you like every time you leave, we talk for hours on end, you call me first every single time something good happens, and I do the same. I flirt with you non stop! I fucking bribed the boys to stay home tonight so it could just be the two of us!”
“What! Sams! I thought you were just being nice. I didn’t want to assume anything and fuck up our friendship. I’ve literally never had a girl that was a friend. Just a friend. I’ve always wanted to date girls but I literally had no chance back home. I thought that’s just what girls that were friends did.”
“No! I. Want. To. Date. You. I literally have since the MOMENT I met you. Why in the fuck did you think I dropped Mako so fast. You’re ten times better. I think he knew I’d be into you and that’s why he didn’t want us to meet. And guess what? I am!”
“Soooo like. If I asked you to watch movies with me tonight you’ddddd sayyy?”
“Yes! Go get me one of your comfy sweatshirts and a blanket and I’ll cuddle the fuck out of you.”
