"Hey, Haruna, sorry again about the parfait..."
The recipient of the apology, spaced out and moving on autopilot, took a moment to register the break in their silent walk home and another moment to respond in what she hoped was a steady enough voice. "Hm? Oh, Maika-chan, it's fine."
"Are you sure? You seem upset."
Well. To be honest, she kind of was, but not at all in the way Maika was probably thinking. It wasn't even about the parfait. Well, not directly. Haruna had been giddy at the thought of sharing parfaits with her crush, but the opportunity had slipped right through her fingers. They had at least shared the one strawberry parfait, but it was a consolation prize in a thoroughly ruined moment. But whatever, she was over it. Just a silly girl having silly feelings.
Even though it was Haruna that missed out on food, you would think it was Maika from how sad she looked. Haruna giggled at the other girl's puppylike expression. "Really, Maika-chan, it's fine. I know you didn't mean to do it."
"Still..." Maika rarely spoke so softly. It was a far cry from the quick, decisive tone she had when she suggested they split their orders. Her gaze drifted down to the ground. Haruna's moved to follow, but only made it as far as Maika's lips, still lightly dusted with cream and sugar from the parfait. They were moving, saying something, but Haruna didn't hear the words over the blood thundering in her ears and the memory of something else the older girl said earlier.
"You had to move fast and take what you wanted!"
Haruna gulped and took a step towards the other girl, barely remembering to check that no one else was around. "H-hey, Maika-chan."
"Yeah?"
"I think I can still get a taste of that parfait."
"What? H-"
Before she could think better of it, Haruna closed the rest of the distance and lightly grabbed Maika's chin.
"U-um...?"
"Y-you said there's no time to hesitate when it comes to food, right?" Maika's face was as pink as the strawberry parfait they'd just shared, though judging from how warm her cheeks felt Haruna probably wasn't doing any better. "S-so here I go. You don't mind, right?"
Maika swallowed hard. "...What're you waiting for?" With that, Haruna pressed forward.
Maika's lips were soft. Haruna tasted the lingering rich chocolate and fresh strawberries as she tentatively pushed her tongue ever so slightly through. It was awkward and sloppy...and ever so wonderful. Haruna stepped back. They looked at each other.
"Well? Did you like it?" Maika asked, trying and failing to regain her usual bravado.
"It was fine, but...I think I want to taste you next time." Before Maika could respond, Haruna grabbed her hand and all but dragged her home, eager for a second helping.
