Work Text:
Jealousy was unbecoming of a young lady, but she couldn’t help it. Not that she would ever admit it. To be so loved and valued wasn’t easy when she was all too aware of how much damage social pressure could do. So much so, she found herself watching her sister out of the corner of her eye, hoping that there would be something, anything she could do to lessen the pressure.
Standing in another’s shadow would take its toll, as would knowing it would grow taller and taller as the days passed. How could you sidestep it, when it would follow you, becoming your own even as it kept you where you were, powerful and yet… so, so small.
And yet, Ruby didn’t know how her sister managed to find solace in such a bind. Perhaps there was solace in taking shelter in it, to know what you must do in order to keep eyes where you want them, and never having them look elsewhere. She didn’t know, and she didn’t ask.
Questions upset the balance. Ruby couldn't bear to see the tower crumble. Still, their father would push and he'd push.
When would her sister go past the brink?
