Work Text:
There's something alive in Gotham City, something that wasn't before. It slinks through the alleys and across the roof tops. It winds itself around the fire escapes and ducks beneath the warm glow of the windows. It melts into the cracks in the walls and envelops the city in cold and dark. It isn't a bad something, rather an unsettling force that stops criminals in their tracks and provides an unsure comfort to victims. It coaxes struggling people down from the roofs of buildings, afterall that is where the Something thrives and the Something prefers to remain unseen.
The Something keeps growing, it brings with it menace and reassurance. The dark that shields the innocent from its foes and brings with it the cackles of something More. The More leaves behind it, flashes of green and yellow and the silent patter of small nimble feet and mischievous laughter. It bounces off the walls and feels like ice sliding down your spine. Something is alive in Gotham and it brought something More along with it. Something bright and happy but somehow harsh and vicious at the same time.
The City grows used to the dark's companions, the force that both keeps and somehow offsets the balance. The blanket that lingers in the sky seems less grim and hope fills the lungs of the people that walk streets. Paranoia and danger still lurk around the corners no matter the change that the somethings bring to the city. The same people that walk around with hope filled lungs walk with bowed heads, one hand constantly in their pocket clutching whatever they believe can protect them. There's nothing the something can do to change the past but it tries to create a better future.
Unfortunately, the cackles and bright flashes aren't the only companions of the Something. When the Something arrived in Gotham, something Other joined it, the Other isn't welcome but it tries it's best to make itself be. The Other feels maniacal, its laughter is deafening and it dampens the hope that the Something worked so hard for. The Other is dangerous, it burns down lives, it causes birds to bleed and it cripples prophets. It is cruel and disgusting and slimy and it isn't funny at all.
But of course, the Other can create things just as well as the Something can. When the Other's cruelty goes above and beyond everything is quiet for a long, long time. The Something is angry and agitated but it simmers down after so long. Unfortunately something Else rises up. The Else is red, red born from green. The Else is angry and so much harsher than anything Gotham had seen yet. It grips tight and it roots out corruption as permanently as it can. The Else is abrupt and it burns bright when its present, it leaves an impression but no one can agree whether the else is good for Gotham or not.
In the end, these ever-watching presences are just a given. They have become apart of Gotham, they are alive and unsure and wrong and right. They're as much apart of Gotham as the citizens that walk the streets gripping hope and paranoia as close as they can, hoping against hope that the Something and the Other and the Else will pass their gaze over them and focus on each other instead.
Something is alive in Gotham and it's good and bad and hope and despair all at the same time.
