Wish Upon a Star

Summary:

"My sister Tsutako said that a wish would come true if you prayed three times to a shooting star," Giyu says quietly, gazing at the stars above.

Sabito may have the appearance of a thirteen-year-old boy, but he'd be twenty-one by now if he were still alive. He isn't naïve enough to think a shooting star will really make wishes come true, but what if…?

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

"My sister Tsutako said that a wish would come true if you prayed three times to a shooting star," Giyu says quietly, gazing at the stars above.

Sabito turns to look at him. Moonlight falls on Giyu's face, softening his features and making him look younger than he is. Giyu meets his gaze, his eyes devoid of any emotion. He looks detached from this world, as if he might disappear before Sabito's eyes at any moment. Fear grips Sabito's heart all of a sudden. He inches closer to Giyu on the large boulder so their shoulders are touching each other, feeling the other's warmth to make sure he's still there.

Giyu leans into him. "She was wrong," he says. "I saw one before the day she was supposed to get married. I wished for her happiness, but it didn't come true."

Sabito's a spirit, so he can't possibly have a heart. But the ache in his chest feels so real it's almost too much to bear. He doesn't know why he's suddenly remembering the conversation from their childhood days. Perhaps it's because the color of the night sky reminds him of Giyu's eyes. Perhaps he just misses Giyu.

"Look, Sabito. It's a shooting star."

Makomo's voice breaks him out of his thoughts. Sabito's eyes widen as he follows her gaze. A glittering star sails across the sky, leaving a trail of light the color of wisteria.

"They're the color of Sabito's eyes," Giyu comments, staring in wonder at the lavender-blue flowers blooming all around on Mount Fujikasane.

Sabito smiles at the memory. That was the last time he saw Giyu's smile. He wonders if he will see it again.

Giyu stopped believing in shooting stars when he was thirteen. Sabito may have the appearance of a thirteen-year-old boy, but he'd be twenty-one by now if he were still alive. He isn't naïve enough to think a shooting star will really make wishes come true, but what if…?

Vaguely, he wonders what Giyu looks like at twenty-one years old. Giyu hasn't returned to Mount Sagiri since he left to become a demon slayer. Sabito wonders how he's doing. He suddenly longs to see Giyu again.

Another star shoots across the sky. Closing his eyes, he laces his fingers in front of chest and prays.

I wish to see him again.

He says it in his mind three times before opening his eyes.

 "Sabito!"

A blinding light engulfs Sabito before he knows what's happening. Makomo's voice is the last thing he hears before everything fades to black.
