Chapter 1: Our Meeting

Chapter Text

Huening Kai was an average high schooler. He was friends with the geeks, bullied by the jocks. He got average grades and he had a stable house life.

The only thing was, he was best friends with Soobin.

Soobin was the town's loner. He smoked cigarettes and rode a skateboard. He didn't have a great home and was often talked about by all the mother's in the town.

Huening Kai had always been told to stay away from Soobin but he had never seen the harm in talking to the older. After all, Kai hadn't seen him do anything wrong so there would be no reason to.

On a spring day while he was in the park, some of the school's jocks decided to mess with him.

(TW: Homophobic language)

He was peacefully making flower crowns when the head of the basketball team crushed them with his foot. Yoongi sneered down at an eye-watering Kai. "You fucking fag. Didn't mommy ever tell you being gay was a sin?"

Kai looked up," I'm not gay!"

Yoongi snickered. "Awww or course not. That's why your making flower crowns right. Tch, as if I'd believe that." Some of the guys behind him laughed.

"Hey!" A crying Kai and a smirking Yoongi looked to where the voice came from. Yoongi quickly dropped his smirk when he saw Soobin running towards him.

"Yoongi you ass whole!" Soobin punched him straight in the nose. "AAGHH!" Soobin grabbed him by the collar and pulled him so they were face to face. "Leave him the fuck alone or I swear I'll kill you!"

Once Soobin released him Yoongi and his crew ran leaving Soobin and Kai alone. Kai was glad to have Yoongi away.

"Th-thank you Soobinnie-hyung!" Soobin glared at Kai.

"Where'd you go off calling me like that?" Kai fiddled with his fingers. "I'm sorry I just thought we were friends."

Soobin raised his eyebrows. "Huh!? I've never even talked to you in my life kid!" Kai looked up at Soobin. "W-what?" He stood up and pointed at himself. "You mean you don't remember me?"

Soobin looked him up and down." No. Am I supposed to know you?"

"I always follow you around how have you never seen me! I mean I thought we were friends 'cuz you never told me get lost but this whole time you didn't know?" Kai brushed his hands over his face. "I mean I know I never got close to you but I thought you at least noticed me."

Kai reveled in the fact that his one and only "friend" didn't know about him the whole time. He couldn't help but think that maybe the older would start bullying him now.
Soobin also didn't know what to think. He'd seen the kid around sometimes but only the occasional coincidence. He didn't notice the other following him around. 'That's kind of scary to be honest' Soobin shrugged.

He pulled Kai up so that they were standing next to each other. From where Kai was sitting the older couldn't really size him up. Now that they were side by side though, the other could see that Kai wasn't really that much shorter than him.

'Seriously, how did I not see him?' Soobin grunted annoyed at himself.

While he was distracted in his own mind, Kai took the time to look at older since he'd never really seen him up close before. He loved the way Soobin expressed himself freely and how the older was taller than him. In fact that was Kai's favorite part about him. As the tallest in his family he always had to look down to see people. Since Soobin was taller, he felt happy to finally look up to someone.

He still looked up to the older in the admiration sense. Seeing Soobin get to do what he wanted without being bullied or watching him do what he loved.

Soobin stuck out his hand towards Kai with a lopsided grin on his face. "Since we haven't been properly introduced, my name is Soobin, but you can call me Hyung." Kai beamed at the other and shook Soobin's hand exitedly. "I'm Kai! You can call me whatever you want!" Soobin chuckled and thought about what to call him.

"I'll call you Hyuka then." Kai then squealed. "I love it!"

Soobin watched him with a smile on his face. He knew Hyuka would be a very interesting person and he looked forward to seeing more of what was to come.
