i.
age nine.
her mother’s fingers brushed through her muddied, brown hair, from where it laid limp upon her scalp. she hummed, a tune the girl didn’t know the origin of, soft and sad as she combed through the knots. “sigyn,” she sighed, “my baby.”
the girl held still under her fingers, as they shook. listened as her words turned into sobs. said nothing.
“I’m so sorry,” her mother cried, and she kept silent under the force of it.
it didn’t matter. the bruise on her cheek ached.
her mother’s apology could do nothing to stop him.
