“You can’t give me detention!” Katsuki blurts out, staring incredulously at the principal. “Or not let me do the Sports Festival!” How else would anyone see how amazing he is! And he’s also pretty sure UA can’t even legally do that.
“I very much can,” Principal Nedzu says, studying him over his tea cup. “While if you were in a different track, such as General Education, I would not be permitted to, Heroics has different standards due to different regulations. Your detention will focus on those regulations and discussion of appropriate use of Quirk in the field since you don’t seem to understand that. You will still be allowed to participate in the work study week that follows the festival, but due to World Hero Association rules, you are not allowed to do the Sports Festival. The Parliament, when agreeing to allow the organization to regulate heroics in Japan, left it in the WHA’s hands in terms of education standards as well. It is why a hero licensed in Japan is also allowed to work in the United States. Due to that, even the types of punishments required by schools are standardized.”
Nedzu puts down his tea cup. “That includes detention of a certain period of time, and a restriction on extracurricular activities such as the Sports Festival. The Sports Festival is not deemed an educational extracurricular, like the work study week or internships. Thus WHA standards specify that non-educational extracurriculars can in extreme cases be restricted from a student.”
“And Katsuki counts as an extreme case?” Mom asks, and there’s something almost…defeated in her voice.
“Your son inappropriately used a piece of support gear to make an attack he knew could easily be lethal, which resulted in the serious injury of another student. Had Midoriya Izuku not needed to dodge an attack your son even specified as only survivable as if Midoriya dodged, Iida Tenya’s severe injuries would have likely not happened.”
“The HPSC also after being given the report requested UA do it,” Midnight says, lounging in her chair. “They’re not very happy right now, and per the Commission employee investigating how UA handles it’s education standard, or rather how closely we’re following them, your son also isn’t deemed trustworthy of not trying something similar.”
“I only did that because it was Deku!” Katsuki says.
Midnight-sensei gives him a flat look. “I need you to really understand that isn’t a good or defensible argument. Actually it just further proves Commission concerns about the possibility you’d do that again as being right. Heroes don’t attack classmates like that. Yes, when training it’s possible for someone to get hurt, but you were intentionally trying to hurt Midoriya. You’re really lucky you aren’t being expelled .”
“And that’s something that’s going to be gone over in your detentions,” Nedzu says.
Wait, what?
“Your detention in reality is closer to an extra class covering regulations relating to heroic standards, ethics, and when you can use certain degrees of force versus not. The detention will also not be lasting the entire year; it’ll be lasting for a month, as I mentioned at the start of the meeting,” Nedzu adds. “You will be allowed to participate in next year’s Sports Festival as long as there is no repeat of this, and depending on your actions for the rest of the semester and first half of the second, you’ll be permitted to still participate in the Provisional licensing exam in the summer. The HPSC has agreed to that.”
“The detention being bonus classes is also why the HPSC has agreed to not pressure us to expel you,” Midnight-sensei says. “And that was actually really hard to convince them of. It’s only because this is a first strike that it worked. If any of your classmates had been killed or permanently injured it would be a very different situation right now.”
“Why is the HPSC so involved?” Dad asks.
“Again, the fact your son basically was using lethal force in class was intentional. The fact that for his very first costume, a costume he’s going to be wearing almost only when interacting with other students since those always got modified over time, had something like that. The fact that they’re incredibly angry with Aizawa lied to Iida Tensei over who was at fault, and the question of him being that biased towards your son after only two days.” Midnight smiles wryly. “Also the HPSC always likes being able to shove its nose into UA and you just gave them a great excuse.”
“Isn’t Aizawa supposed to be Katsuki’s homeroom teacher?” Mom asks, something apparently just occurring to her.
“Seeing as he’s on suspension, pending likely firing along with his pro license being suspended in favor of a probationary license, I am now the 1-A homeroom teacher. Hence me being here the entire time,” Midnight-sensei says, voice now a bit dry.
Katsuki wants to argue against all of it. Argue that he shouldn’t have detention, should be allowed to...
But something tells him…but something tells him if he tries to fight this at all, the only thing that’s going to happen is he’ll be expelled from UA.
For good.
Mitsuki isn’t entirely sure what to do. The thing is, and had been hanging over her and Masaru’s head the entire time, was that when they’d filled out the paperwork for Katsuki to go to school there had been a mention of how punishments were done for heroics. About how different they were from the Support, Gen Ed or Management courses. She hadn’t really thought anything about it because she’d assumed Katsuki wouldn’t do anything like this.
Which in hindsight was really fucking dumb.
She knows her kid can be an asshole. She knows he can be overly competitive. Hell, she’d looked over his costume design and even noticed the grenade issue! But it still hadn’t occurred to her how much it could be an issue.
It had been more than a week since the training class Glasses had gotten hurt during. The other teen is still stuck in a wheelchair, and it had only been from overhearing Deku and Glasses talking that he knows that. Glasses had been saying something about his brother that he hadn’t been entirely able to hear, but that didn’t really matter. Maybe just a shitty apology? Even Katsuki can’t believe the pro had been so dumb to say what he said, and it still makes him clench his fists and grit his teeth to think about how Ingenium probably would have done the same thing to him, and unlike Deku he wouldn’t have been saved by positive words from All Might, Endeavor, and the HPSC.
No one in class is talking to him. No one in their year is talking to him.
Shitty Hair had just looked disappointed with him. Midnight-sensei seemed to have no interest in calling on him during the Modern Art class (and seemed more stressed out due to having to cover homeroom and her regular course). Hell, no one but Mr Inui was letting him answer questions or talk in their class unless it was clarifying something about homework. Deku no longer sat near him, instead switching with Animal Whisper. Deku was also always vanishing after school for some real extra classes about Quirk control with some old guy he’d heard rumors about being All Might’s teacher.
He’d always thought he’d like being left alone, like Deku not following after him.
He was very, very wrong.
